Innoculation reaction

Anyone have an experience with kitties having bad reactions to their innoculations? Halo (gray kitty on the right) and Cammie (tortie on the left) both got their distemper and rabies shots on September 27th. Cammie is fine. Halo was fine for a week and then threw up on October 5th. She just didn't act like she felt well. She isn't even 2 years old (even though she's 10 pounds) but she didn't want to eat or play. So I took her to the vet on Monday and she had a 105 degree temp. She was well hydrated even though she hadn't eaten or had water in 2 days. They gave her a shot (I don't remember the name) to bring down her fever and hosed her down with water. Her fever came down to 103 and kept dropping so she came home. Tuesday morning she was sick again. Her temp was back up to 105. The vet did bloodwork and found no infection. Gave her another shot to bring down her temp and then time gave her some fluids under the skin. They kept her all day and Halo came home last night and ate a little and slept the night away. She didn't move, she didn't do anything. Halo is the kind of kitten that gets up 10 times a night to check things out.

The vet gave us antibiotics to give to her twice a day even though they cannot find an infection. They said that she had a reaction to the shots and from now on they will space out her shots a week apart.

Halo still isn't back to herself but she doesn't appear to have a fever. Anyone have an experience with this kind of thing?

Thumper had slight reaction (throw up) I was going to ask next time we got shots there is a medicine that they can give them to offset reactions.

Welcome to Pet Talk. You'll love it here. Your kitties are beautiful and we'd love to see more pictures.

My cats are totally indoor kitties and do not come in contact with any other animals so I have chosen NOT to give them any more shots. The last time was 3 yrs ago and Speckles (16) was sick for a week and Max (10) was not himself either. I just can't see the point of putting them through that discomfort.

I know that we have had a similar thread about the same sort of thing so I know that some other Pet Talkers can give you some advice.

Bassett reacted really badly to her shots, and so what the vet did the following year, was give her a shot of cortizone first, and then the vaccinations. The cortizone was to ward off any adverse reactions, and it worked :)

Halo appears to have made a complete recovery. She is still taking antibiotics to be on the safe side, but she is back to her fat and sassy self and demanding to go outside even though it is raining. Could be worse -- it could be snowing. Here's a picture of Halo at our cabin in the mountains earlier this year. Since she comes into contact with other animals (squirrels, birds, weasels, etc.) we will continue to get her innoculations but we will not be doing multiple ones on a vet visit. Thanks for your advice and suggestions.

Oh, in this picture you can see her "booby skirt". Poor kitty never got her girlish figure back from having kittens. When she sits down, they hit the floor. :rolleyes: She ended up at the shelter right after giving birth and we never found out what happened to her babies. Well, we took care of that when we adopted her. No more babies for our baby.
