View Full Version : Killian's Surgery

As some of you know, Killian had a fast growing lump that doubled it's size in two weeks and then slowed down. As luck would have it, his vet who knows his liver and autoimmune diseases well, was out of town on vacation!! Today was her first day back and she saw Killian. She was not happy with the lump and aspirated it and looked at it under the microscope. She saw tumor cells, definitely not a cyst. She removed the tumor with Killian only being under local anesthesia (his liver can't take being put under). I will be on pins and needles for 5 days till the biopsy is back. If it is cancerous, we can only hope for "clean margins" in removal. His liver could not take chemo.
Again, please pray for brave Killian. They were amazed at how well he did with only a local. He did not go to bite anyone. They said that he is such a good boy.

Killian, you are a good boy. And you and your mom will be in our prayers while you await the news from your vet.
Sue, hang in there. We're here for you if you need us! My heart does a flip-flop every time I see that you have posted here. This time was no exception.
Hugs to you, and Killian and Shiloh. :)

Anyone know anything about spindle cell tumors. The vet thought that she saw them on the slides. I've read on the internet that they could be benign or malignant, they could go either way. I'm going back to research more on the internet.
Thank you for all your prayers.

Sue,
You can count on plenty of prayers from my house for Killian,
and for you. Hang in there. I certainly hope he has pain meds
that he can tolerate should he become very uncomfortable after
the "local" wears off. Poor baby.:( Love ya handsome fella &
we all want you to feel better soon. :)

Liz, he can only take Ascriptin. I'm waiting for him to become uncomfortable and then give it to him. If not, I will give him some with his dinner anyway.
Oh, I have to stop looking on the internet. It mentions spindle cell sarcoma in GSDs.... I should just wait and not work myself up into a frenzy.....

Like Logan, my stomach does a major flip with every "Killian" post in "Health." I'm glad it's finally done; I know the wait will be so hard. But all of us here are with you and praying for our Killian. What a good boy!! I can't believe he tolerated it under local, with barely a blink. He is amazing Sue; such a fighter, and I know you're so proud of him. Me and Star and Cody are sending you both our love and our prayers for a good report on Monday. We're with you Sue, always. Love, Sandra

Sue this topic also shook me. What Killian has gone through already and now this, and undergoing the biopsy without being "under" and not reacting negatively toward anyone! Gosh, Killian you are awesome! It almost makes one think that, after so many visits to the white coats, he understands you are all are trying to help him. I will certainly keep your sweetie in my prayers. One little piece of advice from me *the worry wart*, is for the next 5 days to stay off the computer and stop reading things. I can't tell you how often I have become needlessly upset because of things I have read. The need for knowledge is strong but I don't want you getting worked up needlessly. Easy for me to say, right? (((Hugs))) to you as you wait and kisses for Killian as we pray for a "benign" result!

can be associated with many different types of soft tissue cancers such as cutaneous fibrosarcoma, haemangiopericytoma or schwannoma.
Surgery with clean margins is usually the treatment for these cancers. If pathology reports the margins were not clean and it's something like haemangiopericytoma, then follow up local radiation is usually the best course of treatment.
Not all front line Chemo drugs are toxic to the liver.

I can't even recount how many times Killian has persevered and prevailed in the face of adversity over the last several years. He is truly the WONDER DOG and a fighter in the best sense of that word. Keep the faith, Sue, this guy is going to pull though once again.

Again, thank you Everyone for your prayers.
Rachel, I was just thinking today of all the medical conditions Killian has suffered through. It is unbelievable. The thread running through all of it, though, except for liver disease, is autoimmune disease, I think.
Here's a list of what I can even remember: (and these are just the major ones, I won't list the little things like anal gland problems...etc. LOL)
Strange rash, hair loss, emaciated, etc. when first adopted (probably immune system problem started)
Eosinophyllic gingivitis (rare in dogs, usually seen in cats
 )
Constant tooth problems resulting in the loss of 8 teeth
Lip-fold pyoderma
A few benign cysts
Pemphigus Vulgaris
Liver Disease (MVD, Acquired Multiple Liver Shunts, Small liver, High blood pressure in the liver)
And now whatever this tumor is.......
I really can't believe how much he has endured and he still keeps on loving..........

Sweet, brave Killian, Carina and I are sending you many hugs with our best wishes that, once more, you'll recover your health and that this last visit to the white coat ends up being only a scare.

Sue,
Just wondering how Killian is doing today. Is he getting around
ok? Hope he's feeling and acting pretty much normal. I think of
him & Shiloh a lot lately & wonder if Shiloh acts any different
around Killian. Prayers continue for a good report from the Vet.

Killian is acting fine, eating, being normal. That should be a good sign. Liz, Shiloh isn't acting any differently towards Killi than usual. She isn't picking up any signals from him. This waiting is so hard.......Thanks for the prayers. One tragedy in the family is all I can handle right now. (See notice on Bandit).
Is tomorrow the day you will hear the results? (Five days from the 8th?) Killian still remains in our prayers and you too as you wait. You and your family have had enough sadness. :( It's time for some good news. We will be staying tuned Sue and hoping and praying for that good news.

Thanks for the prayers, again. I do so appreciate it.
Pam, I should hear by tomorrow, I hope. I am praying that no news is good news?? Why is it taking so long?? All the other times it was back in less time.........unless this time.....No, I am not going to start worrying yet. This is so hard.

We're all with you in spirit Sue and sending you and your family our love and prayers It's such a sad, sad day, learning of the passing of Bandit:( And I know how very anxious you are to learn the results of Killian's biopsy; we are too. Perhaps in the past the biopsies were "frozen sections," which can be read almost immediately. "Permanent" sections do take up to a week to be read. Frozen sections are usually 99% reliable in their results but perhaps Dr. Ball wanted there to be absoltutely no question as to the results, as so opted for the latter. I'm so glad that Killian's feeling so well. That's a very good sign!:) We'll all be on pins and needles, waiting to hear from you and send you and Killian our love and positive thoughts and prayers. EVERYTHING crossed!! And of course, love and hugs to Shiloh!!
