Man binds bear wounds with duct tape
Friday, September 26, 2003 Posted: 12:02 PM EDT (1602 GMT)

Alaska (AP) -- A hunter attacked by a grizzly bear on a remote trail said he used duct tape to bind his bite wounds, then rode an all-terrain vehicle to his pickup truck and drove himself to a hospital.

Bill Murphy said the Sept. 17 attack happened after he surprised a grizzly cub and its mother on a trail about 50 miles northeast of Anchorage where he was hunting for moose and sheep.

"I didn't even have time to jump," Murphy said.

Murphy grabbed his rifle but before he could raise it, the mother bear pinned him face-down.

It then clamped her jaws around his right shoulder and started shaking him like a rag. He said he felt teeth pressing against his skin, then a pop as they sliced through.

At some point, the bear let go, then stood over Murphy, panting and drooling onto his head. All he could think about was a bear attack over the summer near the Russian River where a man was bitten on the face and blinded.

"I just lay perfectly still and said, 'God, don't bite my head,"' Murphy said.

Finally, the bear moved away. Murphy said he got up, planning to shoot the bear, but it had broken his rifle.

Murphy said he wrapped duct tape around his shoulder and cut up a cloth bag to wrap around his thigh. He hiked out to his four-wheeler, rode about 15 miles back to his pickup truck and drove a half hour to Valley Hospital in Palmer.

The 54-year-old said he has no idea how long the attack lasted, but it felt like "two lifetimes."

"I can laugh about it now, but I wasn't laughing then," he said.

My question is-

Why was this guy carrying DUCT TAPE on a hunting trip?? ;)

I could see DUCK tape, hunting ducks......

And how do you get bear spit out of your clothes?

Duct tape, don't leave home without it. I ALWAYS have duct tape when I'm camping and always in my truck. I would probably have it in a backpack while hunting as well. I would't care much about bear drool on my clothes (camping clothes are pretty funky anyway) but bear drool in my hair would really give me a bad-hair day  how rude.

For years, I used to go camping by myself, not in the deep of the woods, but in the Provincial campgrounds. I used to carry duct tape, electricians tape, and masking tape along with string and lots of rope. I like to be prepared for the unexpected.

As for binding his wounds with duct tape, wouldn't that hurt getting the tape off?? Can you spell O-U-C-H?? I could hardly "bear" that much pain.:D :D

Good question Richard. It's right up there with why did the Howells, the skipper, the professor, Marianne and Gilligan all have so many creature comforts along on a 3 hour tour! :p :p

I never know when I have to tape something to the rafters :D And Pam: in all my years of watching TV I never saw the Skipper with duct tape. But then, maybe the Professor invented something that was just as sticky.....

My husband used to be a hunting guide and still hunts. The two things he always has in his first aide kit are duct tape and crazy glue....you can patch almost anything, including skin, if you have those two things!

I once met a bear in a campsite.......

It is amazing how the lack of a fence and light
will make your blood run colder than anything else on the planet.

But that's another story.

I just read an article about aggressive male brown bears stalking and hunting people. It's a new thing that's been happening. One bear stalked a man for four hours before he attacked the man.

The man was able to shoot the bear. Authorities said the bear would have killed and eaten the man.

Usually bears aren't nearly this aggressive so I'm sure it's something that will be looked into now that these killings have happened.

That happened to me about 6 yrs ago. I was camping at a Provincial campground that was more remote than others. At midnight I'm sitting by the fire waiting for it do go down before putting water on it. All of a sudden there was a loud bang from the end of my site driveway and a bear was trying to get into the garbage bin. As Richard said, my blood ran cold and I immediately started to put stuff away.

Figure this, instead of locking myself in the car, I waiting silently in my tent, listening to this bear walk through my campsite. I literally have never been that frightened before in my life or since. You know how that say you are "scared sh***less?" Well, sure enough a hour later I had to go.....in the dark.....all the way up to the outhouse......not knowing if the bear was around......

Lots of bear encounters here!

I've never met a bear in the wild, but I did once have an eagle land on my head.

hmmmmm,

that sounds like a great story...a bird in your bonnet.

BTW

the Chicago Cubs lost tonight and it was wonderful to see the CA
flag on the stage when Arnold made his acceptance speech....

what a thread this has turned out to be!!

Why does the bear always have to lose? They were in HIS territory. ARRGHHH.

On a lighter note, my science class (8th graders) took the duct tape story and ran with it. We were laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes. I have some of the wittiest kids (who honestly would put most adults to shame).

Mugs, how on earth could you have explained The Duct Tape Story to your students and still maintain your authority? Uh oh, do they know about US  ;)

Sorry to join this late but I do have the answer to this having had to remove it from just about everything (including Dustin). Duct tape loses it's sticky when submerged in water so all he had to do was lay in a tub for a while.

P.S. Let's keep this little story between us, Dustin gets too many wounds and is just goofy enough to try that on all his lil cuts.

Yes, my students know about US! They don't know the website, but they know about us. As for authority, I like to tell funny or amazing stories just to lighten things up. I would much rather have fun in my classes than just have to "teach."

I know I'm jumping in here late and I'm sure I'm missing alot of good dtories here, but I have to chime in that if it werenot for Duct tape, our Haunted House would not exist...what else would you hold walls and lights up with?
