10/01/03 - Maggie Mae
This is Maggie Mae. Her story is about the worst neglect I have dealt with and about the most heroic effort caring professionals could ever make to save a stray dogšs life.

Maggie Mae entered a city shelter system on September 17, 2003. At that point she was obviously emaciated, but still on her feet as witnessed by her photo taken upon entering the shelter. Ten days later, Northeastern Boxer Rescue was called and asked if we could take a very sick dog. NBR has never refused a dog from this city shelter, and we agreed to take her.

I was asked to foster this little female over the weekend but first to take her to our veterinarian for an exam and treatment. I was warned ahead of time that this little dog was very weak, and might have to be carried. Nothing could have prepared me for what was handed to me in a towel. This little dog couldnšt stand, she couldnšt hold her head up, and her belly was so swollen that she had to be in severe pain to lie down. She was covered in dirt, and tried to throw up as soon as I put her in my car. Under the towel was a near lifeless dog with just skin covering her bones. She was more emaciated than Bones was, a rescue Boxer we saved a few months back. I wasnšt sure if this dog was going to make it as far as the doctor's office.

She made it to hospital still alive but not moving. Dr. Maria Triana examined Maggie and determined that Maggiešs only small chance for survival was to operate. With the hospital already closed for the weekend, and Maggiešs chances of surviving the operation at slim, Dr. Triana and Dr. Mark Meadow, and their team, worked for the next three and a half hours to remove an obstruction from her intestines to save Maggie Mae's life! I witnessed the effort, the concern, and the professionalism that went into that operation. These dedicated individuals gave this little dog a shot at life. Maggie was so dehydrated her stools had turned rock hard. Her stomach was blown up with gas, and you could hardly see her tail it was so sunken in. But she made it through the operation. It was necessary to transport Maggie to the Emergency Animal Hospital so she could get the 24-hour critical care she needed over the weekend. She had a rough weekend, and again Dr. Meadow ran to the emergency hospital to care for her. The good news is that Maggie is back at our veterinarian's hospital and is hanging in there. She has started to eat, and even stood up today. She is still a very sick little girl but, under the watchful eyes of these experts, we have hope now that she will survive.

We have not received the emergency clinic bill but the estimate was close to $1800. Without this 24 hour care and several Plasma infusions we know she would not have made it though the weekend. This dog is what rescue is all about. There was no way we could have turned our backs on a dog that had been starved on the city streets and then fell through the cracks of the shelter system.

If you would like to help with Maggie Maešs expenses please send a check to
PO Box 95
Sunderland, Ma 01375
or use Pay Pal

We will keep you updated on her progress.

If this works, here's her picture.

We are pretty broke, but I will see what we can do. What a sad, sad little girl. I hope she recovers and finds a simply wonderful forever home where she will be spoiled for the rest of her life.

Oh God I wish I could help but my finances just won't allow it. I will, however, say a very powerful prayer tonight and I know that God will watch over this little Angel. I will be watching for good news updates.

Steno,

Poor baby girl.:( This so reminds me of Hope the dog that
DOGRESQ took into her Shelter. Nothing but skin & bones. I
visited the Boxer rescue site to learn a little more about her.

http://www.boxerrescue.com/

It's a wonder she's still alive. The site shows different pics of
Maggie Mae and you can really see that she has no muscle mass
at all. It's a miracle she could hold her head up at all. I will send
what I can to help this organization help her. I hope with all my
heart that she can be helped back to good health. If any pup
deserves a decent life, she surely does. It just breaks my heart.

Liz, thanks so much for posting that link. I didn't even think of looking up the rescue site, had my mind on other things I guess.

This girl is really pulling at my Dad's (aka the boxer nut) heartstrings. (Mine too!)

Zippy,

I just wanted to hear everything I could about her condition.
Boxer's are also one of my special favorite breeds. I love them
all really, but you know what I mean, I love their sweet mugs.
A very loyal, loving and intelligent breed. I wish I could just
reach out & hug her. I pray she can be helped to heal & learn
that life can be a good thing.

I'm sorry, I thought that the website was mentioned in my post. It is www.boxerrescue.com. (Thanks, Liz.) She is on the front page, under spotlight. If you click on her name, they will have a link to paypal under her pictures.

I am not personally involved with this organization. I have referred boxers from our local kill shelter to this organization and they are now the first place our humane society calls if they get a boxer in. :D I am like Liz. There is just something about Boxers that pull at my heartstrings. It's something about their face.

I noticed this update on Maggie Mae on the Rescue site;

10/06/03 Update: Maggie is not doing well. She stopped eating, spiked a fever, and for the first time her bloods are not normal. We will be watching her tonight, and will update the site when we know more.

This is Steno in cognito.
:( :(

10/07/03 Update: It is with deep sadness that we must tell you of the loss of Maggie May. She died in the arms of people who loved and cared for her. Maggie could not pull together enough strength to fight off the infection that took her life.
We want to thank all the people and organizations for their words of encouragement and generous donations. We will always remember the out pouring of love that was shared by the Boxer community. Maggie May will always live in our hearts.
To honor the memory of Maggie May we are establishing a medical fund. The goal of this fund is to provide medical treatment for abandoned and abused dogs in areas other than the Northeast. We are often asked to rescue injured and abused dogs from outside our area. With this fund we will be able to offer our help if a local rescue can not assist. If we have received donations exceeding Maggie's expenses they will be used to start this fund.
One hundred percent of your donations go directly to the care of our dogs.

Oh God that's so sad. I was so hoping that sweet Maggie would pull through. Bless those who comforted her during her trip to the RB. Maggie, not all humans are bad. During your last days here you were fortunate enough to experience what real love is and I hope you carry that with you always. Watch for Toshie, he would love to be your friend and share his tennis balls with you. Happy romping sweet boy.

I'm so sorry to hear of Maggie May's passing, but I assume it was for the best.
Poor girl--may you play happy and pain free at the Rainbow Bridge, and meet up with many other pets and humans who will love and cherish you.
