Play-biting

Hey all,

I have a 15-month old German Shepherd/Lab mix who still reverts back to biting when we play with her. If I sternly say "NO BITE!" she will stop, but then if we start playing/wrestling/whatever again, she does it some more. The "NO BITE!" command has helped a lot, but it sure would be nice to have her stop completely. Especially since my fiance and I plan on having children in the not-too-distant future (probably with in the next 2-3 years...). I do NOT want her biting on them and them growing up being afraid of dogs.

Everything else about Samantha is perfect. If anyone has any tips on how to get her to stop play nipping/biting all together, you would be my hero...

maybe just a light dab on the tip of the nose, but when the children arrive they must have respect! but you prob no that!

Thanks Delcey. I hate smacking her on the nose, though I have before when she just goes nuts and ignores me altogether - it's the only way to get her attention. But it doesn't stop it totally. If you smack her nose and loudly say "NO BITE!" she will stop... but if you keep playing after that, she goes right back to it.

It's the only thing I would change about her. I'll deal with her running when she gets loose and not coming to me immediately by just being extra vigilant and not letting her get loose, but the biting has got to stop. I do NOT want her snapping at my children, even if it is in play. I know I've got plenty of time before that scenario comes along, but I want to quell that habit now.

Anyone else have any ideas???

ok i just get through this quickly but you can try ignoring her as soon as samantha starts to play bite walk away and totally ignore here (it is the worst thing you can do to a dog that wants to play) also try wiping bitter apple on your hands/arm and anywhere else samantha trys to chew.

and teach the children from the word go to have respect for the dog, and not bother her when she is eating/drinking/sleeping etc and get any future children to work with her on obedience/exercise/feeding etc
