View Full Version : I'm adopting a kitten

About six weeks ago I noticed a tiny black kitten hanging
around my front porch. When I first saw him I was so shocked.
I had never seen a cat so emaciated & still able to walk.I thought
for sure he was near death.I grabbed a can of cat food & some
kibble and went out to him. He meowed like a baby & ate the
food I gave him.(all of it) I started to feed him everyday & leave
a water bowl out in the corner of the porch for him. This went on
for weeks until I could finally see he was gaining weight.I then
made an appt. for a vet visit & neutering. He was scheduled to
go in the morning after Sugar's accident. When Sugar became ill
I canceled the appt b/c Sugar was all I could think of at the time.
This little guy then went missing for a week & Indy had the rain
of the century over Labor day weekend. There was flooding all
over Indy. This little one showed up again last Monday & he
looked terrible. He was limping, eyes matted & had flies hovering
all around him.He looked like "death warmed over". I had taken
the day off work as a sick day so I ran & got the cat carrier &
put him inside. The vet took him in that day,He's been at the vet's
all this week while being treated for URI,infection in his hock from
a bite & one torn toe on his back paw. The vet couldn't save the
toe but his URI has cleared up & his hock injury is improving. He
had surgery yesterday to remove the one digit & be neutered.
He'll have to stay a few more days till the foot starts to heal some & then I'll bring him home. He's about 5-6 months old &
will be an indoor only cat with my other four kitties. I hope they
all get along. With him being so young & my others rangeing in
age from 4yrs to 1 1/2 yrs, I think they should.He's a very sweet
kitty. So tiny compared to my other boys.Wish me luck o.k.?

Liz, it seems as if the word is out for kittens in trouble. They seem to know the best place to go for help. What a challenge for you to take on such a very needy one, but that didn't seem to deter you in the least. You've done good!

You didn't mention a name for the most recent member of the family, or are all the others conferring as we speak?

Congratulations!!! That little kitten has no idea how lucky he was when he found you ( but I bet he knows now )

I am so glad to hear you are adopting Black Kitten (besides Filou and Tigris I have a plush cat called Black Kitten who comes alomg when we go travelling :) ). He is so lucky to have found you. What a good person you are taking care of this little one although your heart was hurting because of Sugar:)

Rachel, I swear there must be a sign in cat language posted
somewhere in my front yard that says " sucker for kitties lives
here". LOL. I do put out dry food sometimes for the neighbor
guy's cat that he sometimes forgets about. Maybe
that's the draw. Anyway, this little one is so tame & sweet, just
would come to me right away. He has the longest tail & the
loudest meow I've ever heard. I haven't even thought about a
name for him yet, but I've been telling the other cats that they're
going to get a little brother & they better be very nice to him.:D

Oh, Liz. What a precious little soul that found his way to you!! God knew what he was doing when he aimed this wee one's compass in your direction. Reading of his ailments broke my heart. But thanks to you, he's on the mend:) I can't help but believe that his finding you was no accident. Sugar is looking down from the RB, so proud of her mommy. Please let us know how he's doing. I think the "kids"will welcome him with open paws. {{{HUGS}}} Sandra

AAWWW Liz, that poor sweetie has suffered so many things already in his short little life. I am so glad he has found you because now his luck has sure changed! I would love to see some pictures, if you can, when he gets out of the kitty hospital. He sounds precious. Here's hoping his new siblings will roll out the welcome mat for him. :)

Oh Liz, that little guy knew where to go when he needed help.
It broke my heart to hear everything he has been through, but luck is with him now that he found a new Mama in you. Good luck with your new little baby and you must decide on a name, so that we know what to call him. lol. I guess we could always call him Lucky, lol.

Just wanted to say thanks for the good wishes for the new
little one. I now have such a peaceful house with 4 sweet cats
who all get along & my sweetheart Smokey who loves all kitties
& really never planned on changing anything. But if you could
have seen this tiny little guy that day.:( He was sitting on the
porch in the sun, fur all disheveled, flies all around his head, &
his was nodding off to sleep while sitting up.:( That was it for
me. I thought if he lives after this, he's coming inside to live
with us. Oh, I do have 3 pics left on that roll of film I've been
working on for the past month or two & I'll save them a few
more days till he gets to come home.:D

p.s. Thanks for the name ideas guys.:)

I think this is wonderful news, Liz! Good for you, and good for him too. I'm a true believer that things happen for a reason. He needed you, for sure! And being able to help these poor guys seems to be something you are very good at!

Liz, ah yes, I know about those signs. Someone put them up in front of my house too. I swear sometimes I think they are in pink neon that only I cannot see.

One very lucky young man now has a good chance at a long life filled with love and care.

You are welcome to use the name I gave my little love, my black cat MAGIC. He was indeed that and had a long history of illness before he came to me.

He was just a gentle giant.

You are such a special person.

:D Yes, I only wish I could find the darn thing. LOL.

I called the Vet's office to check on him today. They said his toe
is doing well( a little red yet), but o.k. & the hock injury is "coming along". When I reported that he had lost the toe I hope you all
knew that by that it meant he was "declawed" on that toe. He
lost the digit. He might not be able to climb as well as he might.
The infection in his leg must have been very bad as I thought he
should be much improved by now. Looks like the soonest he can
come home is the end of the week.(Maybe) I'm going to run by the office after work tonight or tomorrow to remind myself what
he looks like :D :D and give him a little hug.:)

Well I went to visit my kitty at the vet's yesterday & he is
doing better medically, but I was very shocked to see him. He
did indeed lose the whole toe(looks like two missing) on the
right paw. His hock injury is drying up (no infection). The injury
looks quite extensive as you can see it better with the area
shaved. He had trouble balancing on that foot when he was in
the cage. I took him out & held him & talked to him a lot. I was
very surprised to see that his right eye looked strange. It was
turned to the right & his other eye looked straight ahead.:(
My regular Vet was not there & the other Vet said that the eye
infection must have spread to the optic nerve. She said that the
eye should return to normal in a few weeks time. They still didn't
want to release him for a few more days. I was so disappointed
to see him look so different.:( After I put him back inside the
cage & got ready to leave, I stooped down & put my face next
to his face & talked to him about getting well again & that I would
be back to take him home with me.You're all going to think me
crazy but, I swear I think he understood me & he watched my
face very carefully the whole time I was talking to him(with his
good eye).:( I felt so sorry for him as I left but I tried to sound
cheerful for him. Do you think the other cats would be frightened
by his appearance? I hope not. Poor baby.

And I don't think your crazy at all. I think he really did understand you. I think mine do sometimes, so why should he be any different:)

I'm so glad your taking this sweet thing into your home & life!

It's heartbreaking what this poor baby has suffered, but only a few more days now and he should start getting to know how good life can be!

The cat across the road from us had to have a toe amputated a few years back after taking an infection from a ripped claw. He's been fine ever since - it didn't even slow him down. Sometimes though, when you catch him doing something naughty, he puts on a pathetic look and gives that paw a little shake. It is very funny. :D

Hope you get the little one home soon.

Thanks for taking him in and ensuring that gets the love he needs now. Great job :)

Lizbud,
Your last post brought tears to my eyes. You are doing wonderful things for this kitty and you'll always feel bonded because of his early injuries. He'll get better and your furkids wont notice any difference at all.

I can't wait until he's able to come home. Please let us know how the introductions go.

Congrats on the new furbaby!!

Kim, He's doing much better today. I called today early but
my Vet had not had a chance to check him over again today
for release to come home. I went by the office after work &
Dr. said he's ready, he check's out fine.It was feeding time for
all the dogs & cats staying there & he was about to be fed by
the vet tech. He looks very good. The bad eye even looks much
better today. He was able to focus it several times while I was
there & he was more active. They are keeping him tonight to
do the worming & he can come home tomorrow. I'm so excited.:D
I've been practicing names this evening. Walking around saying
Lucky..... Noah....Timmy... & guess what? Smokey answered to
all of them, :D :D I am so happy. Only hope it goes well with the
other kitties in the morning when they meet their new brother.

Just a small update on the new fella. He's doing great. He does
not seem to have issues with other kitties. I just knew he was
a sweet, innocent little guy.:) All the other cats came around
the carrier to sniff him out when we came in this morning. Redbud
Mikey &,Blackie sniffed a few minutes & left to watch from a
distance, Punkin however touched noses with him & seemed
very eagar to meet him. As I readied the cage ( old puppy cage)
for Joey, Punkin sat right there & watched the whole time &
stayed afterwards to play with his mousie toys next to the cage.
Punkin has been hanging around & laying close by him ever since.
Red, Mikey & Blackie ( the senior cats at 4 yrs old) are keeping
their distance for now. Punkin at 1 1/2 yrs seems to feel he has
a new play buddy. :) So far so good at our house.:)

I bought a puppy crate with the idea of crate training Buddy
many years ago only to find when I got it home, it was way
to small for a fast growing pup like Bud. I kept it anyway & it's
really come in handy as a temp. housing for the other kitties
(like Blackie & Punkin) when they first came to live here. Oh
I did settle on the name Joey for him. After spending time with
him for one whole day inside & checking out his nature, he's
a Joey for sure. It fits his sweet nature so well. :)

Well things are pretty quite so far today, but last night was
a little rocky. Redbud & Mikey came out into the same room with
Joey & were watching him from the stairs. Red is the biggest cat
and has always been very protective of Mikey who was the runt
of their litter. Redbud was in a real snit & was hissing (first time)
and acting very upset. He even hissed & swatted at Smokey
when I was letting Smokey out to the backyard. He's never done
that before. Red even scared Punkin who acted like"what's
wrong with you?". I really believe that Red want's Joey to know
who's boss & he'd better very careful around him. Red & Mikey
who were raised by the feral Momma Kitty are the most cautious
of the cats & Blackie (a real peaceable soul) is just staying back
because they are. Punkin & Joey both had much more experience
with people & other cats before joining the family. They are much
more trusting. When Blackie first came inside to live, Red & Mikey
followed him around relentlessly. They were so fascinated to see
another cat. Now they are the best of friends & Blackie grooms
them all & they him. It will take awhile but I'm sure they will come
to see they have nothing to fear from this little sweetie.:) I do
promise to take the last three pics on my roll of fim. I'll do it this
afternoon or evening & turn in the roll tomorrow. Should have
the pics for you to see by next week.:) Thanks for the good
wishs from everyone.:)

the film in for processing this morning. Guess what. I got more

Just a small update on Joey. He's doing very well health
wise.:) His scent, by now, is all over the place b/c I've been
switching his cage between the two main rooms (family room
and larger laundry room/work area) of the downstairs. All the
other cats seem much calmer now & even pass by him with
only an occasional hiss.( for effect) Joey has his out
of cage exersize time when I'm home, but always in one room
or the other with a closed door between them. I can tell Joey
has no problem with other cats as he wandered off when I
was cleaning up his cage potty tray tonight. He took off for the
open screened windowsill in the family room & raced by Redbud
and Blackie and didn't even stop to greet them. They both looked
rather nonplussed by the whole thing. I'm going to make formal
introductions tomorrow. I'll be home all day, be more rested &
can take my time with them all. Wish me luck that all goes well.

Ruthies Mom, sure. I've sent it in a pm to you.

The intoductions went pretty well I think. Joey is certainly not
fearful of any of the other cats. He's a real corker. :D I did two
sets of intros, one this morning & another this afternoon after
they ate dinner. This morning Redbud & Mikey pretty much just
sat & watched Joey running around the room. One hairy time
was when Punkin jumped up on the cat tree acting playful & Joey
jumped right up there too & started to play wrestle. He played
a little rough for Punkin & surprised the heck out of him. I stepped
in with the cat wand and gave the "we play nice here" speach.
He tried to approach Red & Mikey , but they both hissed him
away. He took it graciously & backed away giving a little baby
"meow" to them. I did get some pics of the afternoon meeting
but was too nervous to mess with it this morning. The afternoon
session when well, but there's one holdout & that's Blackie.
Blackie (The Great Pacifist) wants nothing to do with Joey. He
actually growled at him. ( A trick he learned from Buddy) When
Buddy hear a wierd noise outside, he would bark & run to the door to check it out with Blackie right behind him growling his
threat to any intruders.:D All in all, I think for the first time, it
went pretty good. Oh, I've turned in a another film roll & started
a new bunch. Pics soon, I hope.:)

Well Joey's doing fine my other kitties however have not
warmed up to him yet. Blackie is the only one that really worries
me. He hates Joey.:( He doesn't try to attack him or anything
but will not let him approach at all. Blackie won't stay in the same
room with him. I'm afraid Joey won't understand the growl &
stay away from Blackie & then he will be hurt. Joey seems to
know his limits with the others, but Blackie just shuns him
completely & won't interact at all. Another small wrinkle... Joey
had a friend (small LH grey kitty) that he hung out with & ate
with on the porch. This cat still hangs around & looks in the
windows at me & the other cats inside.:( I broke down & put
her(turned out to be female) into a carrier and took her to the
vet's office this morning for spay/neutering. Dr. found out she
had nothing to be removed. She had been already spayed but
had no scar as evidence of a prior surgery. She had adhesions
on her bladder which he fixed & is treating her for an bladder
infection. She is staying overnight at the vets. I really don't know
what I'm going to do here. I don't want to put her back outside
alone. She's a very pretty & very sweet cat & it's getting very
cold at night now. I think I'm in trouble here. :D

I'm glad to hear that things are going reasonably well with Joey and the others. My Katie girl still hasn't fully excepted Chipper, even after 20 weeks of him being here. She will hiss and growl at him one minute and the next start playing with him for a bit. But there is more hissing and growling on her part, than playing and Chipper just backs away. So all in good time I guess.

As for Joey's little friend.....Guess who's coming for supper?:D

I brought the grey female home today. She's doing fine &
goes back to get stitches out in two weeks. I want to keep
her inside till then at least. I'll take in day by day & see how
everything works out. The "boys" being around her cage don't
seem to faze her at all & she loves her little cat bed.:)

Joey however is a different story. He & all the other boys were
in the family room after dinner & I was entertaining them all
with different cat toys. All went well for about 30 minutes, then
out of the blue Joey went up to Redbud (sitting on top of the
couch) & showed the most aggressive stance I've ever seen
from him. Ears flat, eyes slanted & focused on Red & looked
like he was going to pounce. He did. Just that quick. Red
let out a loud meow & took off & Joey followed him to the next
room. Red found a hiding spot somewhere & Joey was just
running around like a nut. I lured him back to me with a treat
and put him back in his cage. I can't have this behavior from
Joey.:( Redbud & Mikey were born to a feral mom but never
grew up outside. They are total innocents when it comes to
fighting, etc. I'm sure Red never expected the attack even tho
I saw all the signs of it about to happen. Lord give me patience.

Joey might be relegated to Momma Kitty's garage. If she'll have
him.

It's no problem at all. What's 1 more? ;)

10-03-2003, 11:38 AM
Jen,

Did you read what I posted about Joey attacking Redbud? I
don't mean the playful pounce & wrestle session of playful cats,
I mean a "serious" "I'm going to kill you" attack. My inside boys
don't do that, never have. If Red, Mikey, or Punkin ever get too
carried away with a play session, one cat will break it off & refuse
to play the game anymore. No harm, no foul & they're still friends
afterwards. Don't all cats play like this? I admit, I don't know that
much about cat behavior & only have experience with my four.
I do know that outside cats tend to play "for keeps" more often.
What I'm saying is "is it the exception to have four male cats that
get along well all the time" & do you think it's unrealistic to think
that Joey will ever un-learn the fight to live attitude he's had to
have from growing up outside. He was pretty well beat up when
I found him, something my four have never had to experience.
I truly need to have a peaceful house. Any advise would be much
appreciated. Thanks. Liz.

Really wanted to update a little on the kitties. Katie (grey cat)
has had a remarkable calming effect on the "boys". I think she's
going to be a big help in reducing the stress levels around here.
Can't post any more right now as I have an all day class today.
I'll try to check in at lunch. Have a great day everyone.:D

So much has happened since I last posted on Joey. He's
doing great. Saturday was the first day that Joey spent with
all four other kitties & all was well. Well, only one spat with
Punkin and that was settled quickly between them. No hard
feelings on either side.:D I stayed with them all or within
earshot of them most of the day and all when pretty well.
Sunday was even better. Joey is such a sweet little guy, I just
knew he'd blend in if my other kitties would calm down & be
themselves with him. Katie(grey LH kitty) was deemed very
adoptable by the local Humane Society & I turned her over to
them last week along with all her medical records. She's such
a sweetheart & I hope by now she's found her perfect home.
I just didn't have the space for both & felt that Joey with his
"funny" eye would stand the least chance of being adopted.

It feels so good to finally see the" light at the end of the
tunnel". Bringing in another kitty can be very emotionally
draining. A good thing, but it's getting harder to find the time
and energy to do much more of it.I'll have some pics of all the
kitties by this Weds. I'll post some then. :)

I'm so glad to hear that Joey is doing well and that he's also getting along with his new siblings. :) I'm sorry to hear that you had to give Katie to the Humane Society. Hopefully she'll find another loving forever home soon. Thanks for the update and I'm looking forward to seeing some new pics of Joey. :)

It is sad that I can't keep everyone I come across.:( but, I
don't have the space or the money to responsibily care for more
than the, now seven, cats and one dog that I have. I've always
hoped that I could adopt an older dog someday too. There are
just so many deserving animals needing homes.

Sorry, I'll have to post the others later. Imagestation is sooooo
slow right now.

p.s. Please excuse the messy room. The maid's had the last two
weeks off.

Oh, no they don't really. Can't tell it by that pic, I'll try to get
another so you can see them side by side. Blackie has shorter
little legs & is VERY plump.:D Joey has longer slender legs &

Ally Cat's Mommy,

Thanks. :) Joey's doing very well with the other cats now.
It's almost like he's always been here. They all get along just
great. :D I'm so happy & relieved about that. The one thing
I had not figured on was my dog Smokey. He does know each
and every kitty as a different personality and knew that Joey
was NEW. Joey & Smokey have been getting to know each
other for the last few weeks & thank heavens, they seem to
be hitting it off very well also. The weather here is pretty mild
for this time of year so I've opened a few windows today. Joey
& the others are in 7th heaven sitting in the windows & enjoying
the outside air & watching the birds & squirrels.:D

I wanted to update a little on Joey. He's doing very well as
are my other kitties.:D But the big news is Joey's eye is better.
It now looks completely normal.:) The Vet had said it would take
8 weeks or so, but he thought it would eventually. Joey is such
a velcro kitty & I would have loved him anyway, but I'm so glad
he'll be looking much better in pics now. Oh, and he's gained
about 2-3 lbs in these past weeks. He's not fat, but he's still
growing I guess.:D

To tell the truth, I feel a little funny about posting pics & things
about my cats because I'm not a total devotee of cats. I mean
they are not my total focus in life & I never went out to find them
the way I did my dogs.Cats are beautiful, delicate creatures who
are fasninating to observe. I love & care for all my cats & dogs, but I have always felt more kinship with canines.

After reading posts from all the folks who have only cats, I feel
like a bit of an imposter. I do sneak in pictures of my kitties every
once in awhile though.:D Joey says thanks.:)

I just found this post, again, after all these years, and I must say that I understand, Liz, that dogs are easier to post about. Their personalities are more diverse and there is a more common bond with them (in my opinion), but I LOVE my cats dearly, just like you, and I think you should share more about yours. We just have different relationships with our cats than we do our dogs. They are no less loved, for sure. :)
