I was at Wiscoy on Monday evening and got a chance to meet a new breed of dog that I just feel in love with! It was a Leonberger puppy. Of course it was 80 pounds of puppy! *LOL* He was a tad rambunctious but I just loved him. I don't have a picture of him..his name was Zeus...I will post a pic of the breed. Just a beautiful dog. Will definately go on my hubby's and mine's possible list.

Leonbergers are wonderful but can definately be a handful. Our Dakota is a Leonberger and we love her so much. She is wonderful and 85 lbs of puppy and she is much smaller than her sisters. Many of them are at 100lbs now.The web site at www.leonbergerclubofamerica.com I think it is has lots of info if you want to check it out.I have to run for now puppies need to go out .I may be wrong on that address sorry I don't have time to look it up right now.I was just stopping by for a minute..I love my Leo.

I also love Akita's. I am so sorry you lost yours. It is so terrible for us left behind when they cross that bridge.
The 80 pound Leonberger puppy I met was just wonderful. Also exuberant. Being the first time I have ever met this breed I made the mistake of crouching down to talk to him....*L* I ended up with a paw running down my face and a very interesting looking scratch for about a week. It started at the corner of my right eye and ended on my chin while crossing my lips. The poor lady felt so awful. I kept telling her it was alright. Not like it was the first time I had been injured by an animal and it wouldn't be the last and it was my fault anyway. Zeus was just being a puppy. They are most definately on my list of potential dogs along with Kuvascz. But I will most likely end up with a large mixed breed that needs rescuing. *L*

Rescuing is great, since childhood most of mine have been rescues but don't forget the breed rescues too.I have been to rescues,SPCA's and breed rescues for my furbabies, plus the ones that are found or dropped off. Then those that joined the family when people joined our family with their furbabies.Dakota(our Leonberger) is our first from a breeder though we met out great pyrenees breeder when we rescued him.My next will probably be a Leonberger rescue.I love them all.

I have been keeping an eye on the breed rescues. The only difficulty I have found with that so far is our cats. Many of the dogs needing rescue say they don't do well with cats. Orrrrr....on the other side of that coin. One of my cats is very ummmm...lets say...emotional. My vet and I agree that when we are ready for dogs we should probably start with a puppy so that Deirdre (the emotional cat) can adjust with a youngster animal better than an adult. But you never know what circumstance can bring into your life. :D

My brother has a loen. mix. A great family dog & protector.
They got it from a friend in the country here & the neighbors dog got loose & breed w/ their shep/chow mix. They had an appt. for spaying 3 days prior but were told from their vet that she was in heat & they should wait until after the heat to spay otherwise it is more costly & time consuming as there is much more blood & swelling going on then. They just could not bear an abortion so here were a few rare mix pups. Beautiful dogs!

Aren't Leos gorgeous! I am a volunteer for Leonberger rescue, but since they are so rare, they don't show up in rescue very much. They have my paperwork, though, in case. Most of them come from CA, it seems. I have never been called to foster, but I was called once to see if I wanted to adopt an older female from CA. I had to decline, at the time I was fostering for GSD rescue. I am interested in GSDs, Leonbergers and Great Pyrenees. Wouldn't it be great to be owned by one of each!!!

I am a volunteer with Leo rescue and I am on the list for another Leo.Our Leo is a dream. They are like potatoe chips you can't have just one :D Our last dog was a Great Pyrenees rescue. He was wonderful too. They are beautiful dogs too.I have not had a GSD but for the 15 yrs of my marriage my inlaws did. They had 2 very special ones during that time. After the one passed they got the other. They were most definately GSD people. We had an Akita instead of the GSD.I love them all.I like some of the smaller dogs but I really am a big dog person, then medium ,then small but I do have 2 small. My daughter has one and I have a shiba Inu who most definatly believes she is a big dog.

Laurie, I, too, am smitten by the "big guys". My GSDs are oversized and 100 lbs. at least. I have not had the opportunity to be owned by a Leo yet, but who knows! If I am ever called upon to foster (when I am able to foster again), I KNOW that I will end up keeping him/her. I was told by Leo rescue, though, that so few turn up to be rescued, that I may not get the chance.
My Great Pyr was the biggest sweetheart to those she liked, but not to all. At one time, a neighborhood teenage brat threw sand in her face when she was in the yard and she NEVER forgot that. She had it in for many teenage boys. She did pick up on fear, too. If anyone was afraid of her, she knew it. She did LOVE all children though, and wanted to guard them. If she loved you, you were blessed with undivided love and devotion. I never sat alone without her huge head in my lap.
When it comes to GSDs, though, there is just something about them that I cannot resist. Maybe way back in the time of dinosaurs when I was young, that stuffed wolf had an influence on me, or RinTinTin on TV......or my first dog, a German line GSD. Yes, I do love Pyrs and Leos, but I think my first love is the GSD, especially a rescue!! :)
