View Full Version : How tolerant is your dog?

What things does your patient (or not so patient ;) ) dog put up with?

Nebo will allow me to put just about any type of clothing on him....sunglasses, hats, shirts, sweaters, shorts, bandana, harness, life jacket, etc. He doesn't really like the Doggles, but will leave them on usually. He hates the halti...but he'll still let me put it on. Sometimes he tries to get it off though.

He'll let me put toys/treats on his nose and he'll also hold them in his mouth. If he's got something in his mouth he's not supposed to he'll always allow me to get it out with no problems. I can stick my hand right in his food bowl and that doesn't bother him either (unless I'm a dog!)

He's very tolerant of grooming........he'll just stand there while I bath him, and has no problems with the dryers. He's a little bit of a baby about brushing at times, but not bad. He's great about his nails, and will allow me to trim/shave his pads (excepet when it tickles lol). He lets me brush his teeth just fine also.

Reggie and Smokey both will let me put on sweaters but usually get them off within an hour....Reggie will let me put hats/sunglasses on but he won't leave them on. No way either one would hold a treat on or in their mouth. No way am I going to put my hand in their foodbowl or take something out of their mouths either. I value my fingers!

Smokey is usually pretty good about baths but Reggie is a total brat. He won't hold still! He will NOT let you blowdry him either. Smokey will sometimes but just his back. Reggie is fine about the shaving except for his ears. He doesn't like to be brushed! They are both fairly good about nails. No teeth brushing!

Buddy is pretty tolerant. The only thing he doesn't like is getting his nails clipped :)

Tikeya is tolerant of me lol, she lets me touch her food she lets oscar eat out of the same food bowl as her at the same time as her, she wont let me cilp her toe nails, but she is getting better with letting me trim her feet hairs. She wont wear a musel, and she will now put toys in her mouth or anything for that matter. lol

She will step into her harness for me, and she will lay on my brother, she hates baths though .

I'm very happy with the tolerance level of all 3 of mine, but
Maddie goes above and beyond my expectations. When
she had a tumor and any other kind of lump or bump the
vet could find on her body removed a few months ago,
she was just unbelievably good about having all the stitches
removed. There was at least 7 or 8 different spots on her
face alone. She sat there patiently, not a sound out of her,
while the vet tech removed all of'em. She even commented
when we were done, how wonderful Maddie has been about
the whole thing.

She's also extremely tolerant with kids. My cousin's lil' girl,
tried to pick Maddie up by the neck, before I could stop her
and Maddie's attitude was one of "Oh kewl! this gets me
closer to your face, so I can lick you more".

We had a Lhasa Apos when I was a kid that we dubbed,
"the dog from hell", because he was always ready with a
growl and a snap over just everything... Zero Tolerance...
Hated kids, grooming, the vets and he was definitely food
aggressive. He'd got ahold of a pork chop bone one day
and tried to swallow it whole. I heard him choking and
found him with it half way down his throat, stuck. He
growled at me the whole time I was removing it to save
his lil' life.

My Uncle was over one day, trying to rough house with
him and was teasing him. We kept warning him to knock
it off, that Ghengis wasn't his Lab and didn't appreciate
the rough housing, but he didn't listen. Ghengis promptly
attached himself to my Uncle's boot, which was lucky for
him that he was wearing cowboy boots or he'd of had some
pretty nice puncture wounds in his ankle vs. his boot.

Anywho, after having a dog like him, I truly appreciate
Murph and Maddie and Oz and never underestimate
the importance of socialization, when they're puppies.

Both of mine are some what tolerant,
Both of them they are fine with triming nails, they have NO food/treat aggression with people or other animals. Baths are not to bad. They are both pretty good at the vet, and both love other dogs!

But both have snaped at kids (Yikes!! )
Buddy is NOT tolerant of my husband:(
And both are not tolerant of people being in our yard, which is good most of the time, but when we invite people over and they have to watch there behinds, because Sierra will nip you on the butt if you walk to fast!!
(I need to do something about that!!)

clover is the most tolerant out of the 3 dogs
she is great in any situation except for, being blow dried (she hates it, so we have given up), having her tempreture taken at the vets:eek: , and sharp lil puppy claws near her neck (she used to have ALOT of problems with the skin around her neck and remembers the discomfort), and she is naturally territorial :)

Theo (chichi) on the other hand cannot stand strangers, children, dogs that jump/step on him, having his nails cut, going to the vets, but he loves to swim , have baths, play with other calm dogs at the park, and go for car rides.

penny HATES having her nailscut (has to be muzzled), and does not like the water but will tolerate a bath, and can be possesive with treats (rawhides, dried liver etc), but could not care less if you took her dinner away from her ~weird lil dog~

I voted wrong lol :p

Mickey is tolerant enough. He'll let us give him a bath, clip his nails and brush him and his teeth without much fuss. He won't give me a hard time with balancing things on his nose (usually) and he doesn't care if someone if face to face with him whil he is eating or drinking. When little kids come up to play with him, he stays there patiently and even if they pull on him, he won't move. He will let me dress him up but he won't stay in it unless I have a cookie with me. Hehe :D

With Kia, it depends on the situation, but I put down somewhat tolerant.

She does NOT like her nails clipped or baths and it is during those times that she has bared her teeth at me. She's not tolerant of those two things at all.

She'll allow me to dress her up but she doesn't like it when something touches her ears, so she won't wear hats.

Her adoption papers said her tolerance was unknown with children under 12..... so I'm careful to watch her but for the most part she's been great (as long as they don't try to take her treats from her)

At a recent picnic I turned to find two young children pulling her ears and tail. She just laid there and took it.

(Of course when their dad saw he spanked their butts and sent them to a proverbial corner.... they left her alone after that. ;) )

I voted "tolerant"

For the most part she is pretty good. The one time I dressed her up and made her pose for photos (for Miss Canine PTer 2003 :D) she was VERY well behaved. :D

However, when I'm just playing around and try to put sunglasses or a hat on her she won't stand still.

She's great when I'm brushing her, but not so much when I clip her nails.

She can sometimes be a little fussy when I'm putting her halti on, but for the most part once it's on she just leaves it.

Kai's very tolerant with me. He lets me put on any shirts, shorts, shoes, ties, hats, glasses...anything on him. He use to hate baths but now he sits there like a good little boy. Brushing doesn't seem to matter to him. He just lays there for me while brushing. He's very good when I do his nails and trim his feet hair. He stays still for me. But when it comes to other people, he's not so tolerant. :D I feel special

Nova is extremly tolerant. She lets little kids chase her, hug her, pull on her fur, pull on her tail, pull on her ears, lol.

She also will let me dress her up with only some dirty looks and a little bit of "Mouthing".

She is exretmly toleratn about new things and new situations also, like my uncles wheel chair she sniffed it and didn't even care, and it's one of the biggest wheel chairs I'v ever seen, lol.

She also doesn't mind walkers she just sniffed it and didn't care and aloud the little old lady to pet her while she sat there and allowed her to. :D

So I would say extremly tolerant of everything.

All of our dogs are super tolerant. We have 4 newphews aged 12, 10, 9 and 5, and the dogs play wonderfully with them. One night when we were babysitting, the youngest kept yelling in Cincy's face, all night. Finally, she looked at him, and barked once. He kept staring at her and getting in her face, but he stopped yelling :)

They are all also very good about baths, nail clippings, gromming, etc. Cincy gets pimples on her belly and she just lays there and lets to you look/pick at them. They are great about medecines, eye drops, ear cleaning, etc, etc, etc

Leather is very tolerant. Kids can hang all over her, and she's a good girl. But there are two kids that she has bitten in the past -- that was when she was being abused though...If I were her, I'd bite them too after all that I'd have been through. She is okay if I stick my hand in her bowl -- but if another adult who she doesn't know well does whoa, watch out. I can put clothes on her too. She hates to have her nails clipped, but she'll put up with it. She LOVES to be brushed.

Timber is great around kids. She follows them around (And annoys them  ). She gets sooo exited when she meets new ones. She hates to be dressed up, but as you can clearly see from the pictures I take, she puts up with it well. lol. I clip her fur all the time. She doesn't like it at all, but she sits still for it to be done. She gets brushed every day and she hates it. but still will hold still for it to be done most times. She couldn't care less if I put my hands in her dish. She ignores the food when I'm around. She's much rather have my attention, which is why I have to leave if I want her to eat or drink.

Killian and Shiloh are very tolerant of their family and children. With strangers, it's a different story.

Well when it comes to people, my dogs are VERY TOLERANT, like when I was a toddler, I would pull their ears, sit one them, scare them to death, etc and they put up with me.

With me: they're both extremely tolerant!

With strangers: it's hit and miss

Max is very tollerant! :) he will put up with just about anything that is thrown his way.

Spike it somewhat tollerant! He is getting better but when he feels he has had enough that's it there is no changing his mind. :)

Abbey is very tolerant--she'll roll right over for a belly rub after she meets anyone!!!
Riley is quite tolerant also, but as a pup, he's still a bit of a spazz!!!

Kito is not so tolerant--he hates kids, and certain people. When our neighbor comes out, he will bark his head off at him, and he will nip at kids.

But, he'll let me dress him up, and he'll let me snuggle him under the covers at bedtime.

None of them enjoy baths, or nail clippings, but they all love the vet!!

They pretty much let me do whatever I want to, to them.
I can take their food, toys, bones, or whatever & they won't do anything (even thought they may not want me to).
They let me dress them up with hats, bandanas, balloons & what not (even thought they don't want to).

I brush them every other day. Huney doesn't like it but will come to me. Roxey & Angus just lay down & let me brush away.
None of them like baths, so if I try to get the in the BR no way jose! But it's fine if they go in their self just to *visit*

The girls are never around any small children so I couldn't tell you if they'd be good or not, but I bet they would since they love other dogs, Angus always loved the kids.

Overall they are tolerant of everything! What wonderful pups I have:D

Bull will lay there and let me do just about anything to him. I can cut his nails with little problems (at first he'll try and pull his foot away but then just give up), I can trim around his pads, brushing his teeth doesn't seem to bother him, he loves to be brushed and bathwater makes him freeze up. He even lets me paint his nails (at the moment they're chrome).:D
I've never tried to put clothes on him (but the image of him in my "I leave bite marks" shirt are flashing in my head now) but he doesn't like hats or sunglasses.
He loves kids and lets them do just about anything to him as long as he gets his loving. When Katie had her pups he was the most gentle as I've ever seen him. He just lay there and let them chew on him and chase him around the house.
You can take anything out of his mouth but he does get a little snappy if other dogs are around him when he has a rawhide.

Katie doesn't like her nails being cut or her feet trimmed. You can put you hand in the food bowl and take toys away from her but don't go near her when she has her rawhide. She'll let us dress her up but no hats please. She loves baths. She can do without brushing but I can do her teeth. She loves kids and will let them get away with murder.

Duke is still in the puppy stage and doesn't like anything new which is just about everything. Although he is giving less of a fight about his nails now.

Rosie, Molli and Zoe are extremely tolerant. Each of them allow me to 'see' their treats. I'll put my hand out and ask, "Can I see what you've got?" And they drop it in my hand. None of them care if you go near their food.

Bart's a different story. He doesn't like that many dog treats. So, if I want him to take it and hide it wherever, like under the couch, so Zoe doesn't steal it, I go to it and he runs over there, takes it, growls and runs away. He doesn't care if you're near his food though... but watch out when he has a treat. And I can't hold him without him growling at me and sometimes going to bite me. lol.

Jesse is tolerant, but there are those seldom times that she can't take it anymore; she'll growl or fake nip at most.

*for her age, i'm surprised at how tolerant she is. Good Girl! :D
