View Full Version : The periodontist visit

Well, we got two hours notice, and away we went to meet Dr. Auvil and the periodontist. We had to wait until he finished up with his two legged clients, before he came OUTSIDE to see us- board of health reasons and all that.

The perio didn't give me any false hope. He said that he wasn't suprised all the gum grew back. He thinks it is coming from the bone, not the gum. So, cutting the gum didn't stop the bone from producing more. It seems there are two parts to your jaw bone. The bottom part, that is largely stagnant, and the top part that the tooth grows out from. Getting to the this top part of the bone might be a solution, kind of. I think from here we are going to see how the one tooth Dr. Auvil exposed does over the next few weeks. If it stays exposed, then, maybe, just maybe, it would be worth it to put Binx through some more operation. The operation would focus on that lower part of his gum- which is significantly less overgrown than the upper, and they would go all the way down to the bone, and see how that develops.

The perio stressed that unlikely results possible if this tooth doesn't stay exposed. He said he wouldn't do more surgery, not with what he knows now- it isn't worth it. Binx isn't going to die from this, he will just look funny. So what, that doesn't bother me (well, it does minutely). I am going to get some photos together, ones that show his distorted muzzle, and send it, along with some more xrays to this perio guy. He is going to send it on down to UK (I think), to get some of his guys to look at it.

I will just wait, hope and see....

Poor Binxy boy and poor Johanna!!!! More waiting and hoping. Will it ever end? Will be praying it does and there is an answer so that Binx Boy will get his teeth and start looking better. Although like you said, it doesn't really matter, he is still the Binx Boy sweeter and cuter than those other Saints who haven't had problems like his.

Cinder and Smoke, you are so right! If only we could love all critters just that way!

We do love you, Binx, and wish you the very best results from all those big brains that are trying to help!

Oh, Binx, I hope they find a solution to your problem. Your Mom is such a good Mom to try and help you with this.

Killian says don't worry about not having teeth. He had 8 teeth pulled and the other dogs don't laugh at him. We all think you are adorable, gums, teeth, bone, whatever!!!

Hugs to you and Mom.

Johanna, I really believe that Binx will be healed of this. BTW, what is the clinical name for his condition?

As long as Binxy isn't in pain is all that "really" matters:) But I sure do hope they can find out what to do about the gummy boy:D

{{{HUGS}}} To you & Binxy boy!

Best of luck to you Binx. If the condition causes no pain than I agree, it matters NOT what you look like. We all look different.
I have a question, though: Will the gums just grow and grow without end? Because if the answer is YES, that it may cause pain in the future.
(by the way, I had no idea that the bone produced the gums)

Binx, you are still a HUNK! in my book.

(tells you something about my age, when I think a Hunk is a dog).

You have a great Mom too!

((((hugs)))) to Binxy and also you Johanna. I wish there had been more encouraging news, but we can still keep our fingers and paws crossed just a little. Thankfully Binx's fellow fur friends won't notice the difference, unlike humans who may stop and stare at someone a little different. Bella and Ripley send you lots of slurpy licks. :)

Binx is such a beautiful St. Bernard. I wish the best for him. I've always had a 'thing' for Binx, ever since I joined.

Best wishes, Binx!!!

Poor Binx! I hope everything works out. You are such a good mommy for taking Binx to all these people and trying to work things out. So many people would just get frustrated and not pursue it!
