Well, the results are in, though tomorrow is our official visit. It is NOT cancerous, thank God. But, it is more than excess gum growth. It is excess bone growth, too!!! The vet wants to see the one tooth that was exposed down to the perodontal ligament...and talk to me about 'where do we go from here'.
I just keep thinking, excess bone growth? Am I going to be owned by a little elephant? :D Will I be able to get home tonight and open the front door? Will I see Binxie sticking out all the windows? Will he be like a giraffe? Will I have to rent a moving van to transport him places?
Tune in tomorrow for more of Excess DOGGIE!!!

Thank goodness it's not cancer! Good luck to you both with the official visit tomorrow!
You won't need a van to transport him, just a cart to hitch behind him! Think of all the gas money you'll save! Binxportation! ;)
Oh my I am glad it is not cancer! Your post as always had me laughing and that is what will get you through this! "Where do we go from here" sound a little ominous. Hope he will have some good suggestions. Nevertheless we continue to have Binx in our thoughts for a good result.
Speaking of having Binx in my thoughts, just today I had a patient on the phone by the name of Mrs. Binks. Before she spelled her last name I was sure it was Binx and of course I was thinking of your boy. Pet Talkers are always on my mind! :D

As I came to "Dog Health" this morning, ready to ask about Binxie boy, I saw your post. Like everybody else, I'm happy to hear cancer is not the problem. I do hope the vet can tell you where to go from here and find a cure for everything that's troubling the gentle giant. Please give him a big hug from me if you can still get your arms around him. ;)

Oh Jo, that is SUCH great news!! I have been thinking a lot about "our" "little" Binxy boy and wondering how it went. Well, I'm with Cinder and Smoke....he has to get better by August 31. Good luck with whatever has to be done and we will keep both of you in our thoughts (and of course the kitties too).

Well, I must admit, the visit with Dr. Auvil was a bit of a dissappointment. There doesn't seem to be a clear plan, just several, "well, we can try this...". I am afraid I lost my composure. I can't have Binx be a test object while the humans try to figure out what is going on. I relayed my huge concern to the vet, and told him I wanted to take things in my own hands...and wanted copies of his reports, photos, the lab's reports, etc. I think he was just taken aback, really. He told me that this one lab report place did these things complimentary, to the tune of $4,200, and wouldn't be giving a written report. I don't really understand that...free or not, why would providing a written report make any difference?
Dr. Auvil said I could meet with this human periodontist that he was consulting with, that has two human cases....and talk about the treatment he was using on them. I was amazed that I would meet with a human doctor, and not a vet. I was suprised that this wasn't being done with a vet...this guy would do Binx's surgery.
Then, I asked about getting into some sort of study...that if this is as rare as Dr. Auvil says...wouldn't some place like to get involved? He really didn't respond, or, maybe he didn't understand my point. He said I could go to Illinois, where there is some person I could consult with.
I am frustrated, and kind of straight mad that months later, we are still floundering. This can't be that rare!!!!! Any thoughts would be appreciated.
:(

Call/write to Tufts Veterinary School (Grafton, MA) - they're world-reknowned, and often deal with complex or rare cases/problems. I know they're in Massachusetts, but they may know someone in your area who has dealt with this sort of thing, or at least a Vet Dentist they could recommend ...

{{{Huggs}}} Johanna!
Well, maybe it *is* that rare??
Scarey thought; but if well respected Dental Vets are stumped...
They're *sorta close* to you, and OSU
has a good reputation as a Vet School...
so start here >
Ohio State Univ ~ Vet School (http://www.vet.ohio-state.edu/)
The Big Question is how to get your (and Binx's) Feet In The Door...??
As I suggested once before ~
ASK Dr Auvil if he will permit You to correspond with some of the Vet Schools and use HIS Name when you contact them. Ask if you can act as his Personal Secretary and discuss Binx's Case more as a Vet's Assistant rather than The Patient's Mom. You might get a lot more help from the Schools and Vets; and Dr Auvil will be spared a lot of writing and phone calls.
As for communicating with a Human MD - go for it if the MD will talk to you.
Dogs DO share very similar illnesses with Humans.
And that expensive but un-written Lab Report?
That could be true... you might have to settle for Dr Auvil's notes on the verbal results he received. Hopefully he took some (notes) and will share everything with you.
Let us know if we can help!

How frustring to go through all this and stillnotbe getting any answers!!! And unfortunatly without writeen lab reports, most places are going to want to start over with their own tests, which could be pain for Binx and lots of $$ for you.
I wish there was something we could do :(

alex the wonder dog goes ther biyearly for a check up with the neurology professors and staff. they are excellent. the vet hospital phone # is 614-292-3551 ,line 1 in the phone tree. bring copies of the vets' chart, labs and surgical notes. because this is teaching hospital, be prepared to spend some time there. bring a book, the magazines are a bit tattered. parking and directions are easy. the vet hospital is next to the horse/cattle barns, alex loves the aroma and gets very excited when i pull in the lot (he keeps hoping....he really really wants to visit them......) hope this helps

Oh, Johanna, so sorry to hear that there is no definite plan of action for dear Binx. In the case of rareness, my parent's Great Pyr has a rare cancer and his treatment is also a guess. His specialist contacted all the vet schools and vet specialists to get their opinions. They are trying an herbal (rutin) and diuretic protocol on him. It is hit or miss. So far, so good.
They may not know how to attack his problem yet. I'd go with the human dentist or vet school. Good luck and know that both of you are in our thoughts always.

I am so sorry to hear about your frustration, Johanna, but I'm really glad it's not cancer. I am very curious to find out what the problem is and I hope you can find it. With the 6 years that I worked at the vet office, I had never seen anything like that, nor have I ever heard of it. I think it really *is* that rare, unfortunately. Regardless, best of luck in your quest to find answers. I know they'll come in time. Hugs to my favorite St. B in the whole wide world :)

Oh Johanna, I'm so sorry you didn't get an answer from your vet. Karen is right, call Tufts if only to find out if they can recommend somebody close to you. Their graduates work all over the country and they are very well trained.
Here are some sites you could check also:

I do hope you can find some help for Binxie boy. Hugs to you both from Alicia.

I think I am feeling better, or at least resolved, today. I had a visit with my 'normal' vet for one of the herd...and we talked about Binx. He calmed me a bit, and said, as Adore my dogs said, it really is that rare....so, I am going to go ahead and set up the visit with the human periodontist, and see what he says...maybe I can have this one tooth on me examined?
I will schedule a visit with Dr. A, who wants to see Binx again re: the one tooth they stripped to the perodontal ligament in three weeks....and get the consult set up. My 'normal' vet agreed with Dr. A...human dentistry is the way to go...as they are so far advanced over vets...
Thanks for your support, and I am going to follow up with the facilities reference.
