I stayed at my parents this weekend and they had informed me that they have a "Pet" deer!! Her name is "OOfa" and she is very fond of humans. :) Here are some pics.

This is at Barbara's house (my parents' nieghbors) Shane, a little boy that Barbara watches(he is soo cute!!) and my little brother on the left. (he is six). Oh, they are petting her. LOL

Make sure the boys (and anyone else who pets her) are checked for ticks after they pet her ... deer ticks are a carrier of Lyme disease, but if you catch the tick within a few hours, it isn't transmitted.

OMG! SUCH A CUTIE PIE!!! I LOVE DEERS! If there was a pet I could have after birds, I would go for a deer! Even before a cat or bunny or goat or sheep! I LOVE DEERS! I WANT A DEER! LOL I've petted deers many many times. We have many state forests around here that we sometimes go to for walks, and there are lots of deers there, and they are tame! Such sweeties and we always pet them! Never had a problem with ticks. We figured since there were no signs (as there are in many deer populated areas) it wouldn't be a problem, and we just can't resist petting such a sweet deer coming running to us, but then of course, you can never be too careful. Karen, do all deers carry ticks? Even pet ones?

Aww! How cute. Those pictures remind me of Bucky. Bucky was a big buck who lived up at our cottage, and would eat out of my hand and try to eat my hair all the time. :)

That deer is a buck/male. I can see where the antlers are going to be growing in.

Karen, do all deers carry ticks?
Yes, all wild deer have ticks. Just about all wild animals have ticks, especially wood dwelling animals.

Even pet ones?
Depends on where they are housed. And if the owners clean them or not/groom the ticks off of them. If it is a deer farm and the deer pens are in the woods, they can very easily get it.

What an adorable sweetie. Do you parents know anything about her history? Was she raised by people? It's so uncommon for a deer to be that trusting of humans.

Definately an experience not everyone gets.

Thanks, my parents just thought he was a female. I don't know.

This is my first time petting a deer, getting soo close to a deer, and playing with it. It is quite an experience! Boy, if we found a deer in Manhattan people would go crazy. I wouldn't want a deer in such a city, because there are so many dangers for it. But, I came down here to the good ol' country town Walkersville, MD, and instantly made a new friend.

Do you parents know anything about her history?
No, BUT they said that they have seen her all over town, with different people. Hehe, my mom leaves chopped up apples for the deer on the driveway. Almost everytime they are gone in the morning. But, anyway my parents have seen her/him before. My brother told me that the day before the last day of school that he was coloring, and saw the deer in the school yard playing with some high schoolers. My parents also told me that the deer was around even before I came down to visit. :)

Oofa is just lovely. There are a few deer in the field/wooded area near my home where I run my hound, Henry. It's always such a treat to see them when we're out there. Henry tried chasing one a couple of times, but once he discovered how fast and uncatchable they are, he has decided to ignore them and concentrate on smaller varmits.... like groundhogs....

Maggie was also chasing her/him(whatever it is LOL) Then Barbara's dog (a terrier) started barking at it. The deer started playing with him!! It was soo cute LOL.

oofa is very beautiful. We have many many deer in our yard but none are tame enough to pet. They allow us to get quite close but that is all. I don't try to encourage more than that however. If Oofa is a male you want to be very careful this fall. When bucks come into rut they can become very aggressive. Especially bucks that have lost their natural fear of humans. Most likely however you won't see him if he isn't penned in. Nature takes over and they are busy. :o
