How do you pronounce the name? I always used to pronounce it "Dash hound" because that's how everyone I knew pronounced it. But then after hearing Doxie so many times, I caught on that it was pronounced "Dox ind." Now that's how I pronounce it.
But I still hear people call it a dash hound, so I figure it's a personal preference thing. How do YOU pronounce it?

the name dachshund literally means dachs (badger) hund (dog) in german. so dacks-hoond is probably closest.
i have a miniture dachshund who is 12, his name is sidney.:)
On one dog show they pronounced like:
Dach-shund... like they spell it, but I call it what Kfamr does:p

hi linda!
thanks for the welcome. my oldest cat is ok with sid but the others hate him. he is much safer at my mom's (and so are they.)
can i ask you a question? are your dachshunds agressive at all? sid has always listened to me but refuses to listen to my mom. and if my dad gets too close, well, watch out! i know they let him get away with too much and that's how they lost control but he sure is king now.

:) Hi! My guys are not aggressive at all. They are very proctective though. I think every animal has certain "traits" but always have their own little personalities and often I have seen then act like "one people dog". They are very smart and will work people to their benifit. Being a little dog, I think they have a big attitude. I just love them. And we all know, the older we get, the crankier we are!!! HA! :D

don't get me wrong, he's a great dog just stubborn (like me):D
he is extreamely protective especially of my mom, he is very sooky with her too.

Per websters dictionary:
Pronunciation: 'däks-"hunt, -"hund; 'däk-s&nt;
esp British 'dak-s&nd
I pronounce it Daks-hund or sometimes Daks-in-d
I pronounce it dox-und or just doxie lol

The 'ch' in German has a little edge to it like almost like a 'k' but not quite, like when classical music buffs say Bach. 'Hund' is the German word for dog and has the same Anglo-Saxon origin as our word 'hound.' It is pronounced with a 'u' sound somewhere between 'put' and 'boot.' The German 'd' is very hard, almost like a 't,' but not quite. Therefore: Dahks-hoondt, but keep the second syllable short. :D

Just like it's spelled: dachs-hund ("hoont" because a terminal d gets a t sound auf Deutsch)
I'm the proud and happy downstairs neighbor of a black and tan long-haired dachshund named Bailey, who deigns to let me pet her on the head from time to time. She's the only dog I know who has seen a canine dental specialist!

In Germany (where they are from) the only correct pronunciations are Teckel or Dacks-hoont as far as I've heard. In North America, the correct way is either Dox-hund or Dax-hund. :)
Dash-hound is commonly used aswell and very popular, but not at all correct.
I pronounce it as Dox-hund.

we always pronounced it "dox-hund".
Same here.... That's how I've been pronouncing them since I was about 8 years old*lol* Quite a few years ago there was a televised world dog show (from Mexico I believe), and the Dachshund had it's own separate group which included a "Toy" variety.

I guess I say "Doc-sund"
Never really thought about it before.
Always cracks me up though when a customer will call and say, "I need to get my Datsun groomed." Like the car. I'm always tempted to ask if they want an oil change, too. ;)

It's pronounced "Dack sund"
It's a German breed and this is the correct way. Americans tend to pronounce it Dash Hound. I guess it all depends on where one is from and what kind of accent one has. :D

Yeah beacuse there is another breed called a dashhound though I think it is a second name. One that isn't fromaly recognised yet stilll used to refer to the breed. 'Dok-hund' is how I pronounce Dachsund, though I'm a little favorable to a little k sound when I say things "Dox-hund" is what I believe it is supose to be pronounced.
