Well, I guess I'm another newcomer. :p I noticed that there is another Lauren here, so if you want, you can just call me Laur or "that crazy Chinook girl" LoL. Either one works, just to avoid any confusion. ;)

Let's see...where to start? Well, I own three Chinook boys of my own. Scout is 3, Kodak is 2, and Tucker is 1. Although they are all the same breed, they look and act completely different (as you can see in the pictures in my signature). Scout is very much a "velcro-dog," and is pretty aloof and protective around strangers. Kodak is extremely energetic and is always happy. Tucker is pretty spazzy, and has quite the wild side. LoL. Don't tell any of the boys, but Scout is definitely the best cuddler. ;)

Well, I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and your gorgeous fur kids!!

Welcome to another flatlander. I have never heard of a Chinook either but obviously they are great dogs or you wouldn't have acquired three of them. Like Cisco's Mom, I would like to hear some more about the breed.

My Tucker is quite excited about another Tucker on board. (He's on the right.)

Welcome to PT! Your boys are gorgeous!!! I saw an episode of "Beed All About It" on Animal Planet about a year ago that featured Chinooks, and I have been interested in the breed ever since. I have never known anyone that owned though :) I hope you'll share more pics!!

Thanks so much for all the welcomes! My boys send you many happy barks. :D

Don't worry, you're not the only ones that don't know much (if anything) about Chinooks. Everyone we meet thinks that Kodak is a Lab, and that the other two are mixes. LoL. They are a very rare breed, which is a shame because they are such great dogs. I think I've only met one other Chinook in my life, which shows just how uncommon they are...especially when compared to Labs, Golden Retrievers, and GSD's...LoL.

One of the best websites I have found over the years that explains the breed without a lot of extra wording and unnecessary extras is Your Purebred Puppy: Advice You Can Trust: Chinooks (http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/dogbreeds/chinooks.html)

The following is a small piece of what can be found on the site:

"Characterized by his dependable nature, sensible energy level, and sound working ability, the versatile Chinook is both frisky and dignified.

He enjoys vigorous outdoor exercise such as jogging, backpacking, carting, agility, weight pulling, herding, and especially recreational sledding and ski-joring.

However, he is not a workaholic, and given enough physical and mental outlets for his enthusiasm, he is happy to settle on the sofa during quiet times.

Very people-oriented and especially attuned to children, he requires daily companionship (either by humans or other dogs) and can become bored and destructive if left alone too much.

Gentleness and non-aggression are his hallmarks. Most will bark to announce visitors, but that's the extent of their guarding inclination.

All sweet-natured, slightly reserved breeds have the potential for submissiveness and shyness, and this is true of the Chinook. Early socialization is required to build a confident temperament.

Usually peaceful with other animals, he can be a chaser of rodents and trespassing cats.

Chinooks are independent thinkers who may use their problem-solving skills to open gates and cupboards. They are also slow to mature, acting like big puppies for several years."

If you are interested in learning more about the breed, I really suggest you go to that site. It's great, and describes my boys to a point. Happy reading! LoL

Chinooks are alot like alaskan huskies in the way that they were originally bred for sledding and aren't bred for looks.
