I am wondering if sex is one of the main factors when you picked your pet. Do you have any preference? How did you pick your pet?

I picked my babies (three cat boys and one 'sex unknown' bird) by how cute they are and how cute their personalties are. Only after I decided I had to adopt them did I find out they were little boys.

I ALWAYS wanted a girl dog. When we were looking for a dog to adopt, i was looking for girls. We found Simba, a male, and fell in love with him. When getting him, i guess it didn't play a main factor.
When getting Nala, our female pup, it did only because Simba gets along better with females than males.:)

The last three puppies we got were girls because Max our dachshund has an attitude problem with males. Not sure if this behavior is his natural personality or because of his health problems. But, he has seemed to tolerate all the girls fairly well. He's doing the best with the new dachshund, Muffin which really surprises both Dick and I. She adores him and he puts up with her very well when he's awake. When he's asleep and anyone wakes him (including Dick or I) he does NOT take it well. Cranky boy!

Well...for shelties, people have told me that males often make better pets but I wouldn't mind having a female either...Kai just happened to win our hearts. For our next dog, I'd like a female because I think that there would be less of a dominance issue for Kai and the doggie...but if I fell in love with a male dog..I guess it's workable...I'd prefer a female dog though.

For me, I would like either. My mother disagrees, blah blah...
Now, as I'm growing up, I'm only aloud to have female dogs because my mother dosen't want to see 'doggie weiners' when she looks at the dog. :p
So I must say, I'd like to have a male sometime, since I've had females all my life...

I have 2 boys and a girl, but generally speaking I like females
better, because they seem easier to housebreak. Normally
less territorial than the males, so they're not lifting their
leg on anything and everything.

I have 2 males n' 1 female. Asia(female) is very dominate....than Alex laid back n' the puppy is just there havin fun not worried about whos dominate or not. We have always had females all our life....GSD's...n' they are always very territorial. Then when we got Alex...he was more laid back not really worried. I guess I like both....so I guess I go after personality n' looks.

Nah...not something that was thought of :) But when I'm older, I want male dogs. I'm not sure why lol.

I read in a book that females are more protective of the owners and that males are more protective of the territory. Kinda neat. Definatley doesn't fit the description of my girls though. Timber will protect the territory, barking and growling. And the minute a person she doesn't know walks in, she hides behind me. Yeah, real protective  Leather is protective of both, but I'd have to say that she gets alot more agressive on the territory. She's my big mean guard dog :D

I had always seen us with a male dog but it didn't really matter to me. The breeder reserved the female pup for herself so we had the choice between two males.

My whole family are hard core female dog owners.
I added a male, because I did not want to take
the chance of having the same sex Akita's together.
After owning ROcky I would probably just
pick out the male or female with the best personality.
(I only have Rocky to compare with, but
I think females are cleaner,
less destructive, and Rocky seems to be more pushy, but also more affectionate.)

have had males and females-seems the males had flashier coats and were larger. Also I think it's easier to neuter a male than to spay a female-especially now since they have the injections that shrivel the testicles. But both male and female are fabulous beasties!!So no choice. gee that sounds waffleish!!:p

Hehe When we went to get Malone, we definitely wanted a female. But Malone was the one with personality plus, so that is who we picked. :)

I personally prefer a girl. But I guess personality is more important. Chilli is the only 1 there when we got her.

I was going to say BOY, but then thought of my female dogs (all the ones I grew up with), and of course Ruby MONSTER!!!

Now I can't decide .........

BUT if I had to base it on walking - I would say GIRL, because they don't go from "tree to tree" like Captain does

Yes this time i chose a girl on purpose, my other cats chose me and were both boys, and the younger RB Sooti used to chase ash and make his life miserable, i had been told it was probably better to get the opposite sex, and so far its been proved right, i love having a little girl cat, its a nice change, either sex is fine though, but lexie is much nicer to ash and just wants to befriend him.:)

We chose a male when we got Kito, because in all of the pictures of Shibas I had seen, I liked the looks of the male. They had his sister also, but I wouldn't even let them show her to me, so I didn't end up taking 2 dogs home that day.
When we went for a second, a female was what we were looking for, because Kito tends to be agressive.
With Riley, he just happened to be there, and I figured with a pup Kito would be alright--so far so good!!!

I currently have two males and a female. Personally speaking my males are a little bit less maitnence then Winter is...but I think she so HM because of her issuses. But if I had to choose another dog I think I might get another female just to balance things out here. although really I would just take any dog either sex, as long as they had a good personality and fit in the pack.

Ive always liked females. My parents and sister however..prefer males. For Molly, we wanted a female because..they have less fur to groom! And for Daisy, we just thought another girl would be best. The gender doesnt matter to me..its more on the personality and temperment of the dog. :)
