WHat do you think?? Do you like them with their hair cut every hich a way or not? I like them with all their hair!!:D
Well, had my first Poodle in '78......had many more since. I have to say I do not like those fancy cuts that leave them 1/2 naked and 1/2 fluffy. BUT as their hair grows, it needs to be attended to. I prefer them to be givien an all round clip....shaved on the face and around the bum............as this makes them comfortable.
I do not have any Show Dogs................I have only got my dogs to love. and only have saved dogs to love. Never have any of my poodles been groomed for the sake of being a 'show off'. Regards Mich.

i like poodles when they're partally shaven. maybe with alittle fur on their head, ears and tail. like in this pic. :D
Sorry, my computer would not allow me to view your photo.......but do know of the clip you are talking about. Yes it is a cute clip. A long time ago I used to get mine done in the "Lamb Clip" which was a little puff on the head, and what looked like legs from the hip to the paws.......clean face and bum and a puff on the cropped tail ( that was when they used to crop the tails).
I liked that, it was neat, tidy and the dogs were comfortable.

I like them all natural. I understand the cuts for the shows and stuff, but I don't like them at all!!

I think Pam's Bella looks perfect.

Yes I agree, and it is not one of those fancy show cuts........and the dog looks nice and the dog is comfortable, which is the main thing where I am concerned. .

:o Thank you KayAnn. :) I was watching Breed All About It a couple of weeks ago and they were highlighting the poodle. They mentioned something that maybe non-poodle people don't realize. Poodle's fur is the most like human's hair. For example if you shaved another dog down to their skin, when it grew back in to the regular length of that dog's coat it would stop growing. Not so with poodles. If it is not cut it will keep growing and growing and growing and growing just like ours! The problem with that also is that it mats, so you have the possibility of a very horrible looking, miserable feeling dog (as Ripley was when I first saw him at the shelter). I have always kept my dogs in the puppy clip. It is so easy to manage. I do admit to loving the fluffy head and puffy tail tip though. Other than that, just give me plain! :)
Oh, I couldn't agree more. You have to think about the comfort of the animal, and I know, like you, about the horrible matty hair! !
Also the Poodle if left without clipping........it is so very painful for the dog. People who have never owned or rescued one have no idea. When they vote for leaving them natural......you know they don't know anything about them. That is all I can say! ! ! !

She is gorgeous! I too like the name.
My neighbors and best friends that used to live across the street have two poodles. They're both the smaller kinda, one is black and the other is red. Seabastion and Captain.;) We call em Seabass and Cappy though. They're both getting so old now, and Seabass lost his vision. Sweetest little puppers though. :D
Oh! Wow! Reba the Redhead, what a beauty!
I just love that white Poodle in your picture. So tell me, how did it happen to have the "Rose Brown" nose? Everytime I see that picture, my heart melts. Regards Mich.
Mich - That my Bella. :) She is 2 1/2 yrs old, and she had a jet black nose as a puppy. I don't know where the black color went! Maybe she wore the color right off sniffing with her nose to the ground all the time in the yard! LOL!

:D Thanks for the replys!:) But--the poll results won't come up!! Could someone tell me the results??I agree that poodles should cut their hair----but----not all the way. Onlky trimmed!:p
Well, she is beautiful........but then I am biased - - - I must have been a Poodle in a passed life, as I love them so. Who can resist a face llike that in a pound?.......well I can't.

That picture of Bella is gorgeous!! She is such a beautiful lady.
Mich--I voted and said leave them natural, and no, I don't know anything about them, except that they are a very intelligent breed. The only poodles I even "know" are Pam's Bella and Ripley, and Aly's dogs. So you are right, I know nothing about them.
I prefer them to look like Bella, and not like this:

I was not pointing the finger at anyone. I don't know who voted what!
I myself voted " depends" and I have had Poodles for many years.
So, if you feel I have offended you in any way in what I have said.......please don't, as I did not mean to. I am not like that.
I could not hurt people. I am sorry if I have. O.K.?
Some Aussies have different ways of saying things ( I am one ) so pull me up next time, O.K.? Regards Mich.

NO!! I wasn't offended, just clearing up my statement!!!
I enjoy learning about poodles, because I used to dislike them, but hearing stories and seeing pictures on Pet Talk has changed my mind!!!
Well, I am very happy.Thank you. I have met lots of people who don't know much about them. You have to have one to know one....... but looking at your photo's I think you have your hands full at the moment. You have a lovely 3 dogs there. Regards Mich.

I like the way poodles look with longer hair and the way they look with the puppy cut. I don't like the standard cut on the poodles I think it looks funny. I know that it serves a purpose, I think it's supposed to keep the organs warm for when they used to hunt or something like that. But I think they look so cute when they have a normal haircut.
Now I am not too sure on this.....where they originally come from and all that. I thought they came from Russia, but was told that "Pudel" is german.....so..........( "Pudel" was the original name )
They were hunting dogs, and the front was kept bushy and long so as not to harm the dog while it was thrashing around in the prickly bushes to either retrive the game or show the owner where it was.........but don't quote me on this please.
Regards Mich.

Mich we're both a little right on this one. Here's what I found.
"The Poodle was originally used as a hunting dog. While he was very effective on land, the poodles mobility when retrieving in the water was seriously impaired by his extremely dense and curly coat. The huntsmen shaved the poodles rear hindquarters to allow for greater freedom of movement in the water, leaving puffs of hair on the hip joints and ankle joints. The puffs of hair (now called pom-poms and bracelets) were left to help keep the joints warm. The hair was left long of the front half of the poodle to keep the vital organs warm when they swam in cold water."
Here's the website Poodles (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/2826/)
Hey, Mate !!! Thank you..........I am so very glad you know so much about their past.
These dogs you and I are talking about were of the Standard Size also.
Do you know if they originally came from Germany? Or where is their origin???
Thank you once again. Regards Mich.

I really didn't know their orgin so I just looked it up and LOL I still really have no idea. But this is what I got.
"Poodles are one of the oldest known breed to man. It's true origins goes back so back it is really impossible to pinpoint a certain time or place. Early as 30 A.D. Poodle-like dogs appeared on carvings in Roman tombs and on Greek and Roman Coins. We know that the first printed reference to the poodle was Conrad Gesner in 1953. The fifteenth century refers to Poodles in both writing and art, from France, Holland and Italy. The art of that time portrayed the Poodle in trims similar to todays traditional show trims. The three countries that contributed most to promoting the breed were Russia, France and Germany. The Russian Poodle was described as being somewhat Greyhound-like in body type. The German Poodle had a more thickset and had a wooly coat texture. It was here that the two different coat types -- curly and corded -- were noted. Where the Poodle got his name; Pudel (Canis Familiaris Aquatius), or "water dog" in Germany; the Caniche (chien canard). or "duck dog" in France; in England, the Poodle, "splash in water"; when they became popular in Holland and Belgium they were know as "Poedels" all these names have been given to the breed we know as the Poodle. All of the Poodle's ancestors were good swimmers. The first documented reference dated 1642"
My goodness...........that is so interesting. Thank you so much for that. Regards Mich.

Mich ~ Actually Bella came from a breeder. Ripley is my little "pound pupster!" LOL! He had been picked up by Animal Control as a stray and when I first laid eyes on him he was a massive ball of tangled long black fur and mats. His feet were about 2 1/2 times their size and I had to lift a 2" flap of hair hanging over his eyes to even see his eyes. The shelter shaved him to the skin to make him more comfortable. When I brought him home he looked like a drowned rat! :D (No offense to owners of ratties out there! LOL!)
I keep my Poodle boy in a teddy bear cut. He used to have long ear hair, but we're keeping it short now due to yeast infections :(

I don't enjoy the look of the regular "show" cut. I know why it is cut like that, but I think it looks kinda funny :o
I like it when it's cut a bit shorter than an irish water spaniel :)

Unless you brush a poodle constantly, you really can't leave them "natural." Poodles fur grows very long, tangles easily.
I think its best for the dog to groom them short. I also like Bella's cut as well as Reece's teddy bear face. I think poodles look weird without a bit of puff on the haid and tail.

I like a poodle in a sporting cut. Hair just a little longer on the head and tail. I love to watch them strut in heel position in the obed. ring :) But they can be clowns too!

I have to say puppy cut to.Thanks for alll the pics and replys!:)
Great pics on this thread!!
I keep my black toy poodle in a short teddy bear cut, with a pom pom on the tail and long ears - shaved on the underside due to infections too (fyi i got this powder from England online called Thornit. I put some in every time I bath her once or twice every other month - and I haven't had one infection since!!! And she had two infections - or one really bad one - in three months before! NO infecitons for over 7 months now. I highly recommend it.) and a little bit of a puff on top.
Their hair tangles almost instantly if you don't brush it. I also like to keep her a bit shorter in the summer since she's black and the sun makes her hot.
I don't care for the show cuts although they are entertaining, but it's pretty rare to see dogs out and about with big ole helmut head hair.
DON'T POODLES ROCK???!!!!??!!! :) :D :)
Wow, what a lovely photo of your poodle.......and the cushion beside ( is that tapestry) . The eyes is what melts you
Thanks Mich!
She's a wonderful wonderful girl! The pillow is needlepoint - but I didn't do it!! I just love poodles, she's my first, and will definitely not be my last!! Cheers.
Jax, I have had a few small poodles, and loved them too much, but alas.........through the breeders wanting better bodies, ears stance etc.etc, there has been so much in- breeding ( over here they call it 'Line Breeding' ) ........none of mine lived to be 4. I have a big cross Poodle now ( not angry ) ho ho. The Vet says I have a better chance of her living a longer life being who she is.
I asked after the cusion, as I used to do tapestry.....and it is a lovely piece.
Regards Mich.

all of the poodles on this site look marvelous! I hate the show clip where the top knot is pulled so tightly the doggy looks like he/she has had too many face lifts-the Joan Rivers look!!
The clip was designed to protect the joints from the water when the poodle would swim. The worst clip I have seen is the flower sculpted look-the lady trimmed the dog to have flowers and vines and then she took food colouring and made the hair flowers bright pink and the vines green! ugh!!! she should have done topiary not doggies.

Oh my! I have never heard of such a thing. How sad!!!!!!!! I wish you many long years with your labradoodle!!
Pam, what a kind and generous comment to make. I too feel like I am on tender hooks up until this dog is over 3 years of age. The last 2 I had ( one was rescue - the other hubby bought as I was so upset on the death of the last ) showed signs of trouble at aged around 2-21/2 years of age. I won't go into it, but it was to do with the in-breeding which , I've been told is normal in good breeding kennels.
Well, Pam, Me too, I hope I have done the right thing in getting another dog. I remember breaking my heart over the loss of my dog, to a friend...........she said the most wonderful thing to me and I remember it to this day. I will tell you:
"."Mich, God knew that these dogs needed a special person, to love and care for them, as he knew they were not going to be here long..........so he picked you. What better person to give a sick dog to, than you." I thought she was out of her mind, until I thought about just how many pups I had taken home and loved, and through no fault of mine, had diseases they were born with.
I'm not greedy, Pam, I just want one dog to live a good long life, is that too much to ask of God? Just one.

I like the way aly keeps her poodle, i personally dont like seeing poodles shaved and bows in them, i guess for showing them, thats what u do, but its just something i dont like, there such an intelligent dog seems a shame to do that to them. just my opinion thats all, no offence to anyone meant ok.
my first poodle was in '77. I have had small poodles all through these years, along with a whole heap of other dogs. I have never shown my dogs, nor have I ever had puppies ( but the number of females not sterilised I could not count)
I am right behind you on the clipping thing. BUT, if people wish to show their poodles, the dogs have to have these clips....thus why I never. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have people out in an arena without 1/2 their clothes on, parading around on a leash to see which is the better human.......would like to be a judge, you too?
Sorry, forgot to say, my dog is only 1/2 poodle in my picture.

Yeah, she's a Labradoodle!! I've never seen a blonde one-you can see her sweet face better than a black one, I just saw a TV advert with one running on the beach!! sooo cute.
Yes. she is.........but after first joining, I keep it quiet, as I got shot down so many times for owning one. The people didn't know me, or how many dogs I've owned. I wasn't going to come back at one stage, and then thought " Hey, she is mine and I love her, so Humph!! to all who don't like the idea I have her" She is a cross bred dog, one which I can keep inside, and I don't make her look silly with pom-pom's hanging off her everywhere, she is cut to be comfortable.
I went to a Labradoodle Romp here, and you should see all the different dogs they call labradoodles.....I was in a state of shock. some looked like mini labs, others looked like long haired elk hounds, others looked like mine and others, well they were mini-poodles. I was offered lots of males to breed with mine, but I don't breed my dogs, as they are my companions, and I love her and would not do it. I have had dogs since '77 and not one has had pups.

Well I think the man who came up with the idea of labradoodles should be commended! the blind lady who needed a guide dog was allergic to other dogs-and poodles rarely cause allergies and labs are good guide dogs-so perfect combination! If they could breed poodles and cats I'd be fine-very allergic to cats-haven't tried the hairless ones yet-Dr, Evil from Austin Powers, Mr Bigglesworth.
The Cornish Rex cat has hair like ripples, and it does not shed. People who love cats and have allergies, often have a rex cat.

I did not vote, as my three poodles all have different cuts
Pearlie Mae- Ch. Cetaceas Black Pearl is in a puppy cut now as it is easier to groom her, she is twelve years old and is in liver failure. She was in the show clip up until 7mths ago, she is a mini
Gannie Goo-Gannon's Erin of Wildefire is in a complete shave down no hair on head ears or tail. she looks like a apriot curly wiemer which theres no such thing. gannie is a standard
My Riley- Gannon's sir Raliegh of Erin- is in the show clip. Its not as bad as everyone thinks and the top not is not pulled all that tight. and he seems to think he looks like top dog. I do show him and only need one major and he will be a champion. Riley is a standard

Poodles were also guardian dogs in the castles in mid evil times and were used in many wars. In the 1500's in the battle of the roundheads with Prince rupert and charles the first also in ww1 and ww2. They have a colorful past. they were also the first breed used in the starting lines of the doberman and boxer breed. ALso I believe 3 or 4 yrs ago there was a team of poodles used as sled dogs and they won. they were the number one sled team that year yes they beat the huskys and malamutes.
Standard poodles were the orginal and france bred them down to make the mini and toy. they are from russia and germany.

I am so sorry to hear this. One of my poodles died from liver failure and for her it was very quick. Within a week we had lost her. :( {{{hugs}}} to you and Pearlie Mae. :(

My Ripley says:  "That's how I looked when they shaved me down in the shelter and it was winter!" At least Gannie will feel as cool as she looks since it is so HOT out now (at least up here!) :)

Riley is GORGEOUS!!!! I have been grooming my dogs for 30 years although have never done anything fancier than the puppy clip. My hat goes off to you for the work that goes into a clip such as that! I have tremendous admiration for the skill that it takes to achieve such a look. Also the fur that I have seen on some poodles (my apricots were a little lacking in this area) just is not good enough to pull that off. Their fur was less woolly than all of my others by comparison. Three cheers for all the poodles of the world for being so patient in standing on the grooming table and submitting to the primping, done by us humans, like they do. :) Paws crossed for Riley's Championship!!!!
