Well, I took Keegan to the Vet today, b/c she was having some really flaky skin on her back, and getting a bald spot. She is already on supplements and that wasn't helping. So off we went.
Well as soon as Dr. Brad starting petting her he knew what was wrong. I told him she was on supplements and he said that was good b/c he was going to put her on them. So he gave me a shampoo to bath her once a week, and Keflex b/c she has kinda staph infection under where the scales are. And an injection of antibiotic. For today.
That bad news is she has gained 5# since the last time we went in Jan. :o so much for the diet.
He mentioned that we should maybe do a thyroid test sometime. And the more he looked at her, he decided to go ahead and do it.
So while that ran. We talked about switching food etc. Then the results came back, and she has hypothyroidism!!!!! When he mentioned this at first, I thought "Yea I would like to blame it on something, but I am sure it if fine. I would like to blame hypothyroid on my problem too but I can't!" The normal is b/n 1-4 and she is at 1.2 and he said anything below 2 is hypothyroid. So that probably explains why she has the dry flaky skin, hair loss, and weight gain. He said I could be doing everything with her diet right (which I am NOT!) and she still wouldn't lose weight.
So he put her on thyroid supplements and hopefully that will clear up the skin, regulate her metabolism and she can lose weight. He said that the more he thought and watched her and saw how active she is there had to be something more.
So I am to check back with him in a couple weeks to see how she is. Which is fine b/c Kylie has to go in 7-3-03 b/c her rodent ulcer is coming back. :eyeroll: And he gave me meds for her!
So Keegan is going to get a bath again tomorrow! ;) :D
I was so appreciative of the time he took today. He spent almost an hour with us, I am going to send him a Thank you card.

Hasn't she grown up to be the beautiful Golden girl!:) And what a great vet you've got there, as well! Give the brave patient a big hug from all of us here. Her pictures were precious!:)

Staci, when Lilly gained so much weight, a few years ago, and started losing her hair, everyone immediately thought "thyroid" too! I'm glad to know that you know what you are dealing with, at least. Lilly's turned out to be too much food and a fungus!!!
Get well soon, Keegan and Kylie!! :)

I have been thinking about have Cincy tested for hypothyroidism, beucase her skin is so ictchy and she is always gaining weight too. Hearing Keegan has it makes me think about it even more and Ithink next very appointment I will at least ask. Wouldn't it be alittle ironic, if Cincy and Keegan not only share a birthday but a health problem?
Glad you got a diagnosis and can treat the porblem. Just imagine how much energy Keegan may have if she take a few pounds off :)
Hugs to Keegan (and Kylie)

I'm so glad that you have such a good vet. Thyroid problems are not uncommon in Goldens, but are very treatable.
Sweet Keegan Grace, you have grown into a most beautiful Golden girl. Now, if you take your pills, you'll be well in no time, with no holes in your gorgeous shining coat.
Big hug to you and best wishes for a quick recovery from Carina and Alicia.

It's about time we saw more pics of the lovely Miss Keegan Grace!!;) You're SUCH a beauty, Miss K!:) Looking forward to receving lots of happy, positive updates! Sandra, Star and Cody send you hugs, sweetheart!:)
Glad you found out what is going on with Keegan.
Sheba has been on a very low dose of thyroid pills for
about 3 years 2 times a day. (mainly for platelet reasons
instead of thyroid)
The pills worked like a miracle for her.
Her coat filled out, her appitite improved and she looks healthy again.
Keep us updated on Keegan.

I couldn't agree more Sandra! :) Keegan has grown up into quite the beautiful lady!
Staci, I'm so glad her problem is easy treatable and that your vet took the time to investigate. It means so much when they spend that extra time with the worried furparent, doesn't it? I remember when Bella was diagnosed with Lyme my vet just talked and talked with me and was unconcerned about the clock ticking along. I would definitely go ahead and write that note. I wish I had thought of doing that. :o
