It was too good to be true. Killian's health seemed so much better when he was started on the prednisone. His appetite was great, he gained weight, he was playful again. That ended at 3am Monday morning. He vomited. He still seemed to be ok, though. He ate breakfast in the morning and seemed maybe a little slower, but not sick. He vomited all his food Monday afternoon. Later that evening, I gave him a little food and he also ate that. About 1am, he started pacing and asking to go out numerous times. This continued all night with bumping into walls and chairs. Finally at 5am he had a darkish poop. He was still wandering and bumping into things. Around 6, he threw up again. He won't eat at all. My son took him into the yard. As he was petting him, Killian fell on his side, but got up. He seems to have weakness in his back legs, too. He is resting now. He keeps coming over to give kisses.
His vet is not in today and I don't want the others to take care of him, they don't know him like Dr. Ball does. However, if something should happen today, I will take him in. He has an appointment to see Dr. Ball as soon as she arrives tomorrow.
Please pray that this is not the end and that it is just another episode. I'm not ready for that.
Thank you, in advance. I know the prayers will be there for him.

Oh Killian... sweet sweet Killian.
Please get better.... for yourself... for mommy... for us.
We all love you so.
Kia sends wet nose kisses.
*Hugs and prayers from the Smith clan*
Oh Sue this is heartbreaking. That sweetheart has been through so much!!. When I read that he is still giving kisses, as sick as he is, it caused the tears to fall. Oh the love between dogs and their people just defies description, doesn't it. I hope your vet will be able to help and can give you encouragement to continue to hope and that Killi still has many good years ahead of him. I know you need our prayers too. Wish I was there to give you these in person. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

I was just thinking, last night, that you had been quiet, and although I love hearing from you, I was glad you had nothing to report! I know you are worried, Sue. You have been through so much with him and he has been doing so well. Give him a great big hug and kiss from us, and know that we are praying with every bit of energy we have that this is a minor setback and that he will be better. Keep us posted. We're out here worrying with you.

Oh, Sue you two are definitely in my prayers today. Keep your chin up and Give Killian a pooch smooch for me. Positive thoughts only. :)
Please let us know as soon as he sees the Dr.
If he's not drinking water, though, I'd take him in and let them give fluids until Dr. Ball can see him.

Sue, I don't come in very often, just so busy, but for some reason I decided to see what was going on and I have tears in my eyes reading your post. Killian has gone through so much, I will pray and think positive thoughts that this is another episode, Killian just has to get better, what a brave soul he is, giving you kisses during this time. All of the strength I have is going to him right now for him to recover from this. Please give him some hugs and kisses from us. He is much loved.

He finally drank some water and ate two teaspoons of canned tuna in oil. Thank goodness for small favors! He is resting now. At least he stopped pacing and bumping into things. Both my son and daughter asked if he could see....my son held something out for him and he found it by sniffing, not by looking...my son said. It was cheese and he took it but dropped it and left. That is not like Killian at all (except when his liver is acting up.) I do know the signs of liver disease....pacing, nervousness, lack of appetite, head pressing (he's not doing the head pressing). This has me scared. I know he is 9 yrs. old with liver-d and autoimmune-d, but I'm still not ready. I can tell he has lost a few of his extra pounds we had on him. That's ok, he can still lose more without me being upset.
Just when you get comfortable and feeling like he can live forever (ok, for years), then liver-d raises it's ugly head and hits you in the heart.
He will be ok, he will be ok, he will be ok......

I am so sorry to hear this about Killian. You certainly know
him best, & if what you see worries you,I'd want to get him
looked at asap. If you are unable to reach Killi's Vet, or leave
a message for her, another Vet might still be able to check him
out & stablized. I am offering special prayers for Killian & also
for you. Many hugs from Liz & Smokey.

Oh, Sue, my dear, dear friend:(:(:( My heart's breaking for my hero Killian and his devoted Mommy. I don't have to tell you that I will be on my knees praying to God to give our beautiful, brave boy the strength to fight yet one more battle. I'm glad you're taking him in...you can always go back again to see Dr. Ball. But right now I think you need a little support and reassurance yourself. We love you so much Killian. Thank you so much again for all your prayers and encouragement. Heaven knows we need it.
Sorry it took so long to get back here. Finally the vet called (the only other one in that office that I trust). He was out of the office and called as soon as he got back. He asked what were Killi's symptoms and told me to get him to the office immediately. He said those were serious symptoms. So off we went. Killi went willingly into the car with a little help. He perked up a bit to be going for a ride. He saw his gait and listened to what had happened in the last day and a half. He said that Killian is nine years old, with liver disease and autoimmune disease...he sees the symptoms relating to the liver. He also asked about his eyes (just like my kids mentioned). He did a check and he said that Killi could see, but he could possibly have some vision distortion
also liver related). I asked if it could be that it might be the neurological problems that go with liver-d. Yes to that.
So today Killian got the "big liver panel" done to check all levels to tell us where we stand on this. How much liver damage has progressed and if it was just an episode or ....well, you know, the big downhill ride. :( Tomorrow will tell. He also got a shot of Tagamet and Reglan for his stomach.
The good news is he drank some water as soon as we got home and ate a little tuna. Now he is laying around again. The bill was $205!!!
Thank you so much for your continued prayers. I'll update tomorrow as soon as I find out anything.

Oh Sue, I'm so glad your boy is home with you, hopefully a bit more comfortable. I'm glad he had some fluids and a little food. You know...I went through this with my Jing. At one point she lost all vision. She had been bumping into walls, doors. When I got to the emergency vet's, she said "This dog is blind!!" She kept her for a few hours and gave her a high colonic enema:( But by the time I picked her up, she was 100% better and her vision had returned. Sue, I hope and pray this is just a setback. You are the best Mom, Sue. I know Killian knows that. We'll be waiting on pins and needles until we hear the result of the liver panel. Please kiss Killian for me; in that "special place," just between his eye and his nose.

I didn't know about the eyesight. I know about the headaches and pacing. That was Killian last night and this morning. He had some eyesight, but couldn't see very well. He kept bumping into everything, the wall, the large crate in the familyroom, the door...my son.... If you ask me, his pupils were really dilated like when the eye doctor does his test!
I hate liver disease.

Sue, I am so, so sorry to hear of this development. When you had recently mentioned what Killian's weight was, I had been so encouraged as it seemed he was getting to be quite a sturdy guy, and it seemed as though his problems were farther apart. Really Killian has been a miracle dog to survive despite everything. I do believe he has one more miracle for his Mom. Keep the faith.

I was in this false state of euphoria thinking that Killi was doing wonderfully and all the meds, food and herbs were really working. But I guess anyone with a liver dog should know that you can never rest. I guess that is true. But on the up note, Killi has extra weight to lose this time around!

Sorry for taking so long to update. Will post a short note and get to you later.
Waiting for Dr. Ball to call me (Killi's regular vet). The other doctor sounded to ominous about the results of Killi's tests and I need to talk to Dr. Ball about them.
His results on the bile acid test, which measures liver function was a whopping 193 with 13 being normal. Not good.
Have to go pick up medicines after talking to Dr. Ball, so I'll update further. Please continue the prayers. Apparently Killi needs them more now....

Just talked to Dr. Ball, the vet who has been taking care of Killian and she has me calmed down a bit. She said that we know Killian has liver disease and he will probably die from it, but she thinks that this is a severe episode (with all new symptoms for Killian), but she thinks we can pull him out of it. She understood the other vet's concerns (and rightly so), but knows that Killian is a fighter and we don't know when he will die, but she thinks it won't be now. Whew! Killi is still not feeling well at all, but he has new meds and we'll see what happens next.
I also got a way to contact her (the regular vet) on her days off!!
Please continue the prayers because we are not out of the woods yet (but now there is hope).
Hugs to you all!
Thank you God! A little more time left with Killi! Sue, our prayers remain with you and your special Killian.

Killi still doesn't feel good. He's just laying around and looking at us with those big eyes. He ate a little food laced with salmon. He took his new drug Lactulose for the ammonia buildup causing his hepatic encephalopathy (staring off in space, bumping into objects, being "out of it", pacing). It is a liquid and he actually took it. However, I found his SAMe pills on the floor in two different locations after I would have sworn that he swallowed them stuffed in salami. The Amoxicillin went down ok (I think). Well, I haven't found it yet.LOL
Tomorrow we add all the other meds he's on. No wonder he's not hungry, he takes so many meds he loses his appetite!
Killi said to tell Sweet Star***Shine that he's thinking about her;)!

Thanks for your prayers again. They are working.
Killian seems to be getting a little better. He had a good night, sharing the couch with me in the family room. He only wanted to go out once. His legs are still weak, but he ate a little more food this morning. His eyes are not as droopy as they have been. He seems more "with us". He loves the Lactulose (a heavy syrup that I suppose tastes very sweet, it helps the "demons" in his mind (encephalopathy). Hehehehe I fooled him this morning. He hasn't had braunschweiger for a long time.....I put his pills in it and kept feeding it to him. He ate it!! I don't know if that will work the next time, though.
I am so happy. This is just the best news! Killian we loves ya honey and will keep praying real hard. I wish I could plant this on your sweet little head!

Bless his heart, he's trying! I'm so glad to read that he has a little more energy and perkiness today! He can be "perky" right along with all these cheerleaders!!! :p Silly girls!
I've been away all day and couldn't wait to get back to check on him. Thanks so much for keeping us posted, Sue.
Much love to Shiloh and Killian! :)

Killi update:
Yesterday, Killian had a bit more energy. He went in the yard and walked around slowly. He ate a little more for me than the day before! Last night he slept all night and I shared the familyroom couch with Shiloh! And ....hehehe.....he still falls for the old pills in braunschweiger trick. Right now he is waiting for breakfast because he started his pill regimen for the day with SAMe (denosyl) and has to wait an hour before he can have more pills and breakfast. His eyes are droopy and mucusy but maybe the lactulose and prednisone will help later, when he can take those, I hope.
Thanks for the prayers and concern.
Hugs to all.

I cautiously think that Killian will recover from this major episode (slowly). This past episode was worse than all the rest (except for the Metronidazole incident). It has all the signs of worsening liver disease. He has never suffered Hepatic Encephalopathy before and I thought he never would. One more symptom that he can suffer would be seizures (not necessarily going to happen). However, I have warned the kids that it can happen, to be prepared. I was truly shocked at this severe episode. He was doing better than ever these last few months. I have no clue what could have contributed to this. Ahhhhhhhh, unless the rabies shot last week??? "Other vet" said no. I wonder what Dr. Ball says. Hmmmmm, I wonder..........
End note. Hug and love your furbabies every single chance that you get ( I never pass them without a pat on their heads or an eye contact and wave). You never know when that will be the last chance you get. I am trying to cope with the worsening of Killian's liver disease. I thought we could win the battle forever (not realistic, am I). But ,as everyone tells me, back in "96 when he was pulled off death row at 69 lbs. with autoimmune disease (that's probably when that showed up, but was underlying ) and a big rashy mess, he would have been pts. What a shame that would have been. The world is a better place with Killian in it.
Wow! Where did this come from? Sorry. OK, I'm glad I got that off my chest. He is getting better and should be with us a while longer.
Love and hugs to all.

When I first joined PetTalk and started reading your posts about your beloved Killian, my Peach was starting into her declining months. I took your advice then to never pass her by without a pet and a kind word.
Now that she is gone, I feel at peace that she knew she was loved and wanted every day we were blessed to have her. When she was at her sickest and had to be helped outside to go potty, she always looked so apologetic that we would have to help her. We told her that it was OK, that we loved her, and that we couldn't not do this small favor after all she had done for us.
Your Killian is blessed to have someone like you to care for him! There is no greater gift that you can give him than what you are doing for him right now. Take care.

How right you are, Sue. I do the same. Sometimes I get tears in my eyes looking at Carina and wondering how much longer she'll be with me.
I hope dear Killian will get over this last episode and continue to enjoy your love in good health for a long time.
Hugs to you both.

You are absolutely right I never take Perry and Daisy for granted,

Hugs to Killi and Shiloh too

Sue, your post made me cry.
I never ever take mine for granted--they always get a pat, kiss, hello, or tummy rub--it's amazing--when I am running late for work, I'll skip breakfast or not put on make up or something, but NEVER will I leave without 3 sloppy kisses and hugs!!!
I'm glad to hear that Killi is getting stronger--he is so amazing!!!!

My dear friend Sue, Phred took the words right out of my mouth..."it came from the heart." Like you, I never miss a chance to give them a hug, a pat on the head, a big, slopppy kiss and tell them I love them. Even as I walk out the door, I always turn to tell them, "I love you guys." Yes, the world IS a better place with Killian in it. And we are better people for having known him.....and YOU! Killian is so blessed to have you as his Mom. Killian, you do your Mama proud. {{{HUGS}}}

Oh Sue I completely agree!! I left for work on February 1, 1996 and said Goodbye to my Ashley and Whitney as always. When I came home that night Whitney was dead! The vet felt it was a heart attack. :( I always told them jokingly to "guard the house." LOL! I wish I knew if Whitney really knew what I was saying that morning and the love I felt for her. I do believe they understand us more than we know.

Pam, I will always remember your sad tale of poor Whitney's passing. What a horrible shock to you. Hugs.
Thanks to you all. This just goes to show that the PetTalkers have a line to God! Killian is improving greatly. Yesterday, he maneuvered through two patio chairs without bumping into them! I was able to take his guiding collar off. This morning he was pacing.......pacing because I wasn't fast enough to get his homecooked breakfast put out!! HAHAHA. His eyes are no longer dilated. Yes, Killian is on the road to recovery and his nose is out of the woods!!!
Thank you everyone!! Again, another little miracle here on PetTalk!
Hugs and love,

Oh Sue! you are so right! Never a moment went by that I didn't hug and kiss and rub Cody and I was reprimanded for "bothering" him. I loved plopping on the floor next to him, and wrapping my arms around him and smothering him with kisses! I had no idea what I was doing as a first time owner, all I knew is that I loved him more than I love myself and I just couldn't get enough! Thanks for telling us you do it too! I always thought I overdid it.... I think of you and your 24/7 and am so so so happy Killi is feeling better! YOU are the best mom! You know how I feel I can't put it into words....

I believe that this morning Killian "came out of the woods"! He was anxiously waiting for me to open the patio door for him this morning. I thought he really had to go, but no.........he knew there was a rabbit out there. He was out the door in a flash (even beating Shiloh) and ran after the rabbit. The rabbit ran under the fence safely into the next yard. He is back to his old speed.
Hmmm, I wonder if this rabbit is the one who I saved that winter being stuck in my fence??? It used the same route of escape (but this time under the fence, not through it).
Remember that winter?

Thank you all again, Everyone. You are my strength!
This episode just shows me that his liver disease is progressing (and we know it will). I was thinking how well he had been for a while, eating and playing again like before. Then this. OK, back to reality. This time he pulled through. This was the second biggest scare of my life with him (the first being poisoned by Metronidazole and going into detox ). I was already crying because we thought he was dying right then and there (and when it happens it will be like that, I hear....feeling fine, then wham, dead in a week). So please forgive me for getting hysterical when these severe episodes happen, because I know that he won't recover from the final one. I trust in you all for the prayers to pull him through and I believe that is why he recovers. So again, thank you all so very much. Killi sends his love and slurps. (Shiloh, too, because she HAS to be involved in everything!)
Love and hugs to you all!!
