Way to be the typical tortie, and hang in there! True the worst is over, but, you need to focus now on getting your strenght back. Good thing PT'ers around the globe are praying for you. Be strong Bassett!

I've been to see Bassett :) She's actually doing better than I expected. When I got there, she was heavily sedated with pain meds, but when she saw me she tried to get up :) It made me feel good! She was also cold.. because she's staying really still her body temperature has dropped a bit (normal, they told me) so they bundled her all up with a blanket and some hot water bottles.. she looked so sweet :)

I am going to leave her alone tonight.. they want to start her on a new pain med IV drip, and Dr. Schiller is considering removing her chest tube (They haven't gotten any fluid off.. this is GOOD NEWS!!!!), so I'm just going to let them monitor her and get all that much done, and I will go see her a couple of times tomorrow afternoon and evening. Even though I know it helps, I figure the quieter she is, the better.. although I wish I could just sleep there with her! :)

Thanks for the prayers. I know Bassett's angels are hearing them :)

Hi everyone!

Bassett is doing SO MUCH BETTER than yesterday! As soon as she saw me she got up and walked toward me. She gave me, Nathan and Vickie (Slick) headbumpies and asked for lots of cheek scritches. She is giving a LOT of attitude.. she's not very nice to the techs or the surgeon.. she bit someone yesterday. But they aren't taking it personally - and at least she's fighting! Dr. Schiller is really happy with the progress, and she took some xrays of Bassett and is pleased with what she saw. So far - the fluid isn't accumulating like crazy. She said the xrays are hard to read right now, because she is still swollen and there are air pockets from the tube, so she said we will have to wait a bit to get a really good reading on the xrays. Bassett is also hungry.. I could tell right away that she wanted food, so Dr. Schiller said that when I'm there next (which will be tonight) to offer her some food and let her eat. She isn't using the litter box; she's piddling in her bed but I think it's because she's still very unsteady on her feet - her medicine causes that. Hopefully, the meds can be weaned off slowly over the next day or so. Dr. Schiller even said that we might be able to bring her home tomorrow night! :)

Keep praying - they are working!! She's doing great :)

Oh Nathan, thank you sooo much for the pics. It's so good to see Bassett awake and looking so alert. She looks wonderful, and if we didn't know better, we could be fooled into thinking she just had something minor wrong with her - like Miley's hot spots or something - and that's why she has the cone on.

Unfortunately it says it's going to take about an hour to download just one of the videos, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow at work where I have DSL. :(

She really looks good, and I know she'll be back home in no time. I wanted to reach through the screen to give the Doc a hug for doing such a good job on sweet Bassett. :)

We went back to visit Bassett after dinner. This time we were able to visit with her in our own little room. She was much happier. They had taken out her IV and removed her cone, and she was moving around quite nicely. She even jumped up onto the couch and down again a couple of times.. it hurt ME so bad but I think she was ok!

She bit the tech so bad yesterday that the poor tech had to go to the clinic!!! Bassett put her on antibiotics (just as a precaution, but still!!!).. that is why she has the "CAUTION" tag on her kennel :) Hehehe.... what a little meanie!!!

I will try to give everyone a new update tomorrow. I might be bringing her home tomorrow night.. it depends though. I don't know that I feel comfortable with her acting the way she is right now. I don't have a problem giving her any subcutaneous fluids or any shots of pain meds, but she is still quite unsteady on her feet and I don't want her to fall and hurt herself.

Anyway, check in tomorrow night for a new update :)

G'night!

06-26-2003, 09:44 AM
Oh Bassett, I'm so glad to see you haven't lost your tortie-tude through all of this. :D But you really must be nice to the vet people. They are doing their best to make sure you're ok. We'll have to wait for an official weigh-in on the subject from Neko1, but I think the vet techs would be glad that you're so feisty because that means you're feeling much better - although I'm sure they wish you weren't quite so feisty. :D

She really looks good, and it's great news that she may be able to come home, but I can understand your concerns, Naomi. It's best that she be where she will get the best care until she's totally ready to come home, and you're totally comfortable with doing all that's necessary for her.

Thanks again A/V Dept. :D Keep up the great work, because we will definitely want to see more pics and videos as Bassett heals. :D

Its great to see and hear bassett is doing so well, its so hard when our furbabies are hurt, as with young children, you cant tell them why they hurt or why you had to do this. poor bassett she looks so bewildered in some pics, but DONT WORRY bassett all with be good soon and you will be home with your mummy and much much happier, and Lexie says those cones arent so bad , u get used to them after a while and if you are really really good mum will take it off now and then.:) ;)

Another update...

First I will address some of the comments so far... I don't think Bassett was scared so much as she was sedated from medication.. hehe.. her personality didn't come across as scared or upset. She was just a bit wobbly from her pain meds and also she was very tired.. she endured a lot! But I went to see her again today, and she looks almost 100% back to normal. She was PURRING!! and giving me lots of headbumps. If it weren't for the fact that she's got an incision and she is in a hospital, she would seem perfectly normal! :)

When she bit the tech, it was the morning after the surgery, she wasn't feeling good and she was very sedated. She may not have known what she was doing. Since she's been on different meds, she's growled, but not tried to bite anyone. Everyone, though, just loves her. They call her a "hoot" because she's so feisty :) I think her drive to fight back is a very good indication on how she will FULLY recover! :)

Now.. the update :) I could have brought her home today, but I decided to leave her for one more night. As nice as it would have been to have her home, she has only been off her IV fluids one day and I want to make sure she's totally ok before she comes home. I also want to make sure she's using her litter box again properly.. she had been messing the bed because she was tired/weak/sedated. Dr. Schiller said she used her litter box today, so this is a very good sign! :) So, I will be bringing her home tomorrow night! I will be able to stay with her all night, and make sure she's ok. I pick her up around 6:30pm. So, I will be able to give you an "at home" update tomorrow :)

Thank you all for your prayers.. she's doing great :)

Bassett is home :) So far, she hasn't come out from under the bed. I may call the clinic this afternoon if there is still no change.. I want to bring her out and force feed her water if I have to, but I don't want to hurt her. Last night her breathing was bad but it was because it's really hot and humid here. Now it's calmed down and she looks better. I hope she comes out from under the bed though :( It makes me sad that she won't come out, but I think she might be in pain. They didn't have me bring home any pain meds, so I'm wondering if she feels it at all. I will keep monitoring her, and see how it goes. I don't want to stress her out, so I'll just play the waiting game for a bit.

Please keep praying though.. and thank you again!
Naomi

PS - the total in donations when I left the clinic yesterday was $2156.17.. WOW!!!!! :D:D I paid another $300 on it, and there is still a balance of either 17 or 1800.. I can't quite remember. Thankfully, Dr. Shiller's estimate was much higher than she thought it would be, so I'm not nearly as stressed out now. However, I still would not have been able to do it without you guys.. you are the best! :)

Welcome Home Sweet Bassett
I hope you get a good rest and then come out and join your family. You have been a very brave girl. Gentle pets and cuddles for you. I am very proud of what we Pet Talkers have done to help you.

Naomi, what Cataholic is saying makes good sense. Bassett may need to be by herself for a while any to lay low so that she can heal. I am surprised that the clinic didn't send you home with any pain medication. Take care and try to get some rest yourself.

gini

Naomi, it must be so nice to have Bassett back home with you.

And I am sure you are watching her every move.

But even under normal circumstances, whenever kitties are not feeling well, they like to be by themselves.

After what Bassett has been through, I bet she just wants to be left alone for a few days. I wouldn't worry too much, just watch her.

And......maybe you might enjoy the same quiet time - you have been through a lot......and may need to rest some too.

I too, am very proud that all of us could help you and Bassett.

I hope that there will be even more donations to help out.

sorry to hear bassett is feeling insecure, im sure she will take a little time to re-adjust, hopefully thats all it is, she has been through a pretty big ordeal, im very suprised to hear you were not given any pain meds to take home, i know with my lexie she had been given an injection of time released pain relief which lasted for 3 days, but this was specifically mentioned to me, i would querie this if i were you,as bassett has been through a much more serious operation than my lexie, so im certain she would need some further pain relief.
Well anyhow good luck naomi and try not to worry too much, just give her a little time .:)

And it really is wonderful to be part of such a generous community. I can't believe the total that was donated. And to think that 99.9% of us have never met Naomi - and probably never will. Sorry about the "absence" :o

After Bassett got home her breathing wasn't very good, but the heat here has been almost unbearable. It was the humidity that was the killer.. it was just awful. Even sitting still was a chore. Then, yesterday, it was really bad so I made an appointment to have Bassett checked again.. so no, I'm not at home yet. I'm STILL at my friends house, but I'm leaving today and going to stay at Nate's... it's getting pretty crowded at my friend's place :)

Anyway, I took her in today, and they took 95cc of fluid off, BUT.. good news.. it was NOT chyle! It was like the bloody fluid that weeps from a wound.. which apparently is quite common after a huge surgery like this. She is being given prednisone for the inflammation and hopefully when that goes down, the weeping will stop and her pain will go away.. it may not even be pain so much as discomfort. She's moving around quite normally. Also, Bassett is anemic, so I'm giving her something for that.. which is by injection! I was a bit nervous, and it made my knees go a bit wobbly, but I did very well, as she didn't flinch or anything! I guess all that practice on myself with the insulin syringes has been for some benefit! :p

Again, sorry for this delay, but I've been quite preoccupied by Bassett and her new complications, which THANK GOD are not serious!!! (:D) and hopefully, tonight, I can just have a really nice LOOOOOOOOOONNNGG sleep :)

I'll do my best at updating more frequently from now on :)

Bassett's incision runs from between her front legs down to about where a belly button would be. I'm not sure what you saw or what picture you are referring to, but I don't know that I've been able to get a good pic of the whole scar. I refused to take a pic at first.. it was very purple and bright red with bruising and swelling. If I can get a pic now, though, I will try :) it has really calmed down.

I'm heading to a hotel tomorrow night. I just don't want to keep the kitties confined to one bedroom. I'm getting a room with a fridge (read: lots of treats and wet food for the kitties!!!) and air conditioning, which will make things more comfortable for all of us. I have one last appointment on Friday morning, so I'm hoping that I won't have to go back again.. but so far, things are looking good :)

Don't forget, we love you for who you are, NOT for what you look like! Besides, you WILL be tummy-beautiful in short order, I know it.

Naomi, good on you (had to steal the Euro-phrase, he he) to take a hotel room. That should be nice for the two of you.

Lirathal
07-04-2003, 09:58 AM
The three ladies that you see in the video are (from left to right) Slick, Nomilynn, and The Hospital Administrator (I forget her name at the moment).

Well I was at the hotel last night with Naomi and the kids, and we were watching TLC (they have a really cool CSI program on there!) anyway... we were watching TV and Bassett came and layed down between my knees which isn't unusal for Bassett to do. I started scratching her side where she was shaved and she seemed to like it. Then the coolest thing happened, it made me feel so priviledged, she tried rolling over on to her back so I could scratch her tummy, but she couldn't quite do it so I helped her. So I sat there for a half hour or so scratching her tummy, around the incision, all over where she was shaved. And I'll tell ya, if I cat could roll her eyes in to the back of her head saying "ohhhh ya ... right there" she was doing it.

Unfortunatley for me I forgot my digital camera at home, luckily Naomi had hers and got some pictures. I'm sure those will get scanned and uploaded soon enough. Shes doing fine, and recovering well. She scared me a little last night, she caught a stich while moving around and started to breathe really fast and howl, I thought something really bad happened, until Naomi moved her and asked what was wrong. Phew! ... Anyway, the A/V Dept. feels very priviledged to have been trustworthy enough to be the only one to scratch Bassett's belly (so far :P).

A/V Dept.

Things are still going very smoothly. Bassett had been anemic after her surgery, so I've been giving her injections of something called Eprex. She got her last dose of that today (I'm sure she will be REALLY glad about that!) and she took her other meds like a very good girl. She's gone right back to her normal routines of begging for treats in the morning and sleeping on her favourite bed in the guest room :)

Bassett is still doing great. The only thing that I'm a *little* concerned about now are two scabs on either side of her. One I have been keeping an eye on ever since I brought her home from the hospital, because it was in an area that was already shaved. In fact, you can see it in one of the pictures Nathan posted earlier; it's the one that T&P's Mom thought was the incision :) However, today, I saw her hair was all askew on her OTHER side, and she has another patch of scabs there too. I called Dr. Schiller, and she said that she really thinks that Bassett got a bit of a burn from the thermal water blankets they use to keep the kitties warm in surgery. Because the areas are almost identical, she thinks it's where the blanket/bottle (whatever it is) came into contact with her skin. Bassett is totally "unbothered" by them, and I have been putting vitamin E gel on the one, and now the other, as per Dr. Schiller's advice. I just cut away the fur around the other area, and she purred the WHOLE time.. so I'm thinking it might be itchy or something :) Hehe.. oh well.. I'm just glad that it isn't serious and she doesn't appear distressed at all.

I'll keep you updated on her continuing recovery! :)

Bassett is still doing really well :) Her scabs are starting to dry out and fall off nicely.. they are healing up. She licks the "new" one sometimes but I think she's just itchy.

Her appointment for her "check up" is on July 30th. At that time, she will also be getting her annual vaccinations and her 3yr rabies, so it's nice that it will all be in one day rather than having to go back a couple times.

Since the surgery I have given her NO rutin, and she is doing very well. Her breathing is better than I've seen it in years. She also is almost totally back to normal. Her attitude certainly is back!!! :D

In my heart, I knew I had to do this surgery and I knew that she would pull through. I just had a "feeling" that it was the RIGHT thing to do. However, I didn't have any feeling about what the outcome would be like. But after watching her pull through this, I couldn't be more pleased :) Thank you all SO MUCH for keeping on your prayers for her. They are working, God hears them and so do Bassett's angels and they are working their butts off to keep her well :) Thanks you guys - you are the best!

Naomi, I do not know you. I have never met you. But when you talk about Bassett and your love for her, your concern for her and your care for her - I realize I DO know you.

I have gotten to know you through all of the emotions you have shared over your deep concern for Bassett.

That is all that I needed to know about you here.........that you love this one cat so deeply that you would do anything - almost anything to help her and save her.....made me care for you, a total stranger more than you could ever imagine.

I treasure you, and wish that there were thousands more like you, who understand what a great gift an animal can be in your life.

It was such a simple little circle.......you hugging Bassett, and all of us have joined your circle with so much love and care. We adopted you and now take great joy in your success in caring for Bassett.

And now, our circle is quite large........a community who cares, shares, grieves, and shouts to the roof tops in great joy

Thank you for being who you are and allowing us to share in this special moment in your life.

Oh Bassett's incision looks like it is healing up beautifully, but what are the burns on her side from? Poor baby. The one on the right side looks sore. Is it? I hope not.

Looking cool Naomi in the hat.

Nomilynn
07-14-2003, 04:44 AM
The burns are from a thermal blanket/water bottle thing they used to keep her warm during the surgery. The one on her right side, actually, is doing better than the one on her left. The one on the left has started to peel, and she's been licking/tugging, and it's hurting her. I've been treating with peroxide and polysporin - does anyone know how it will affect her if she licks that off? I may call the vet tomorrow and ask if it's the best remedy, and get some Veritron (gross tasting) spray to keep her away from it.

I'll keep you posted though :)

Thanks for looking at the video.

Peroxide will not harm her. Polysporin, I am not sure. A bit of hydrocortisone cream might help it not to itch (so she might be more tempted to leave it alone)
