View Full Version : Where does your cat prefer to drink?

I don't know about other cats, but Fister doesn't drink as much if his water is standing next to his food. We found out long before his bladder problems. I've heard or read this is common with many cats - but I wonder why.

He also prefers to drink out of a real glass, so he has one glass in the bedroom corner and one in the dining room. We change it twice or three times a day.

The #1 preference would be if the water was running across the bathroom floor at all times.

If you don't think your cat drinks enough, perhaps it's worth trying to move it somewhere else. :)

Btw, I'd also like to know HOW much your cat drinks pr. day. Does anyone know what it should be?

Miley prefers a regular glass, next to the bed and Ti prefers a bowl, but not near his food. Ti will also drink from the glass, but doesn't have the freedom to roam the bedroom, as that is MILEY'S room.

Last night we had a major battle in the bedroom, under the bed. It wasn't pretty.

Many of my former cats preferred to drink from a glass. Go figure!

;) ;)

Kona prefers to drink only out of the dogs water bowl. My other cat, Sylvester,, likes to have his bowl in the bathroom sink with fresh water twice daily. I very seldom see him drink out of the bowl when it's in the bedroom.

We have 2 of the fresh flow waterers. One in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. They have all increased their water intake since acquiring these. However that being said.....Kaliban loves drinking out of a running faucet still and Deirdre absolutely loves to drink out of my own glass and preferably if there is ice floating in it.

Max doesn't really care what container the water is in but he does care about the location.

It absolutely MUST be on the bathroom counter. Anywhere else and he won't touch it. Thank God I live alone and don't have to worry about the toilet seat being left up....:D Kitty overboard....

Tubby used to prefer the toilet, but he lately he has slipped a few times, so I started closing the lid and I put a cup of water right next to the toilet. He still tries to jump up on the toilet, but when he does that now I put him down by the cup and he takes a drink. He's getting old........:( I've put a little box at the end of the bed so he can use that to jump up in bed, but I thought a cup next to the toilet might be a little better idea than putting a step stool by the toilet for him. ;) :D

Peanut, as most of you know, has her favorite cup on the floor in the bedroom. This came about because I had set it on the nightstand for myself, but kept being woken up all night with the two of them tromping all over me to get to the water, so I put it on the floor for them. Tubby will drink out of here on occassion, but it's Peanut's most favorite spot.

I have no idea how much they are supposed to drink everyday, and I think it might be different for every cat, but I try to get them to drink as much as possible by promoting it every chance I get.....i.e. turning on the faucet in the sink if that's what Peanut wants, and I make sure there is plenty of fresh water around in various places so it isn't a chore for them to say, go down to the basement everytime they want a drink.

Yes, I admit, my babies are spoiled rotten. ;) :D

All of ours drink from their water dish but they all prefer the warm water on the floor of the shower after we've finished in the bathroom  Tabasco also likes a glass of water.

I don't know how much they drink but the bowl is less than half full by the end of the day. They usually use the kitty litter when we're cleaning it so we can easily check that they're healthy in that area.

I have a fountain that the cats really like (and they drink a lot more water that way)
However, they're not allowed to drink from glasses, which of course means Ananda will spend an great deal of effort getting the last few drops of water out of any glass I accidentally leave around...

Hayley and Mandy have their own water dish although they both drink from the same one. When they are upstairs Mandy likes to drink from the bathroom sick. Hayley likes to jump in the bathtub after we are finished taking a shower.

A step stool by the toilet....oh my!

Edwina has a fountain...it is right next to her food dish...which is always filled. I never knew the food and water weren't suppose to be together (grew up in a primarily dog house) and apparently Edwina doesn't know either. ;) She drinks more, or at least pees more, since we got the fountain.

She also drinks out of the resevoirs on the bedroom humidifier, her poppa's water glass on the table  and the other day she was lapping up the water in a puddle on the walk   !

We tried water dishes and the cats didnt like them! So, now they drink out of a fish bowl (clean, no fish) on my dresser, in my room.:)

Kona's favorite is to drink from a dripping faucet, either the tub faucet or the bathroom sink. Also, every morning she goes into the shower after I've used it to "catch the drips." She drinks from a table centerpiece (for floating candles), too. She has a water bowl in the kitchen, but she doesn't use it.

She is quite happy to drink out of her drink bowl, which is adjacent to her food bowl. She doesn't show much interest in water anywhere else. She learnt early on that there is no tolerance to kitty hunger/thirst strikes in this household!

She has no problems in this area, judging by the many little piles of wee that I sift out of her litter. Thank goodness for clumping litter, it is literally the best thing since sliced bread.

Both my furkids drink out of the water tower. Mishi also still has a bowl in the bathroom where he was initially separated from Mitzi. He still insists on fresh water there, and in the tower AND then he likes to drink from the bathtub faucet. He's a big guy and will drink and eat anywhere it's found - the big goof! I call him my Maine Goon!:D

They have a drinkwell fountain that is next to their food and Sunny loves to drink from it. Storm and Cirrus will use it occasionally but Sunny is the main drinker. They also have a bowl of water that is in the next room and all 3 of them will drink from this. It's usually almost empty each morning. The drinkwell fountain has a resevoir that holds 6 cups of water and this lasts about a week so I think my cats are drinking plenty of water. :) Here's a picture of Sunny drinking from his drinkwell fountain.

One of mine drinks out of the toilet only. It grosses me out but I can't get my son to keep the seat down let alone the lid.

there used to be a self-feeder type of watering gadget for my furkids to drink out of, but I got tired of filling it up every time I looked at it. Now my furkids drink from a large 1/2 gal. (2 quarts) ceramic salad bowl. I have to fill it at least once a day. Also, if ther is any debris in it, they will resist drinking from it. So, I have to watch for that also.

Frankie will only drink out of a glass. He has a very old one from McDonalds, that is short, and has a rather wide rim. He has to have it full, or he will turn it over. http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/f3a17d3b/bc/Pets/__tn_frankie2.jpg?bcYOO4.AVYKBR2xu

Muffin will ONLY drink from a bowl placed in the bathroom sink, this was done to stop her from meowing for the faucet to be turned on... I spoiled her LOL, and it got to where she would not drink from any bowls, so my mother did that and it has worked out well. the bowl has to be moved when someone needs the sink! then put back there... and she will let Callie drink from there. she doesn't mind. Callie will only do it occasionally, I think out of curiosity, but she has her own bowl in the kitchen..
