This is The first Time I have ever trained a bird for someone other than myself. :) lol I'm very excited.

Well My Friend has a beautiful blue quaker parrot named pirate, but she kept complaining that he is very fiesty, mean, and freaks if she goes near him. This is her First Bird, and is a little bit afraid of his beak. lol :p

anyway, I volenteered to help tame Pirate. :) But for a week or more before i told her to sit near his cage and stick her fingers in and talk to him before I came, so it would be a little bit easier. Today was the first session, which lasted *about* two hours. He was very uncomfterble at first but my friend sat on a bed watching a quiet movie and i watched it from next to the bird cage for a half hour, so he would get used to me. As i was watching the movie I felt my hair ruffle, and looked next to me to find Pirate preening my hair!:p LOL he is so cute, and i was very surprised. I wasnt expecting him to be this sweet so quick!

Well I put my hand in the cage slowly, and he glided to the back of the cage. I rested my hand on the pirch for another 15 min. watching the movie when i felt the pirch move, and when i turned around he was on the pirch staring at me. LOL he is SOOOO cute!:D anyway, I left it there for a little while more and then slowly moved it under his belly. He doesnt yet know the step up comand yet, so I sort of had to push him to get on.

Once he was on my finger, he sat there not to comfterbly, but loosend up. He stayed there for a very long time (pooping on me once or twice :o ) lol. He nipped me just once, and not even hard. He was very sweet for not being tame. Well I put him back in the cage and closed the door.

Thats what I basicly did today. :) He really made A LOT of proggress!!!

Just thought I would share!

Congrats on the wonderful progress you've helped this birdie make! :)

Maybe in a little while, you could take pictures of him when he feels comfortable? I'm sure I'm not the only one dying to see him :D

OMG! Awwwwwwwww! I LOVE taming birdies! :D Your story made me want to tame more birds! LOL I've tamed a lot of my friends' birds, and they all came to me wild, went back home as sweetie pies. :p Is your friend leaving her bird with you for sometime, or will she bring him and take him back? I think it would be easier to tame him if he stays with you for a while. How cute. :) I hope we get to see pics of him also!

thanks!:D lol

PCB: She lives right accross the street from us, so i wont be taking him. Its easy to just walk accross, its a big family and someone is always home. She said i could head over whenever I want.

As for pics... :( I *did* take my camera with me, but my friend told me not to take pictures. Her mom took a picture of him once and he almost broke a wing AND leg! the flash really freaked him out... Im not so sure i want to risk it....

Also i wouldnt take him in because of tiki. Im not sure how she would react....

thanks again everyone! Ill update what happens tomorrow! I cant wait to go over again!:D lol:p

Wow, that is a lot of progress! I've been working with a Philippine Blue Nape Parrot at work off and on for the last few moinths, and I still can't get her out of the cage without a lot of effort.

thanks!:D

Well today it pretty much stayed the same.. ;) . The only real difference was that he came out of his cage a little quicker... but otherwise it was the same as yesterday. :D Im hoping in a week or two his real unafraid personality will start popping out. :p

if anyone (PCB..lol) has any tips please tell me! after all... its my first time! :D

Jessica, my favorite technique that has worked every time with bird taming is to hold the bird and sit down on the ground with him/her. Ask your friend to get a large light colored sheet (so that you get light through it) and put it over you, so its kind of like you and the bird are together in a little tent, and the bird can't go anywhere but in your lap. That way the bird is forced to sit in your lap and deal with you. ;) LOL Ask your friend to leave the room after putting the sheet on you so that its quiet and only the birdie and you can have some talk. ;) I usually stay like that for 15 minutes, with the bird in my lap, talking to them gently, and trying to teach them to step up and other commands, under the sheet. Everyone gets so surprised when they see the results with this little trick. It seems that it helps the bird to gain confidence in humans. Be sure to have enough air down there. It shouldn't be a thick fabric, better if its a thin cotton sheet. :)

YAY! I'm glad it worked! :D I *made* up this technique, but its worked everytime, and its fun spending time with the birdie under the sheet too. :p I do that with Popcorn and Muffin sometimes anyway, just for fun. They get all cuddly down there. I think they think its a cage cover or something and means its bedtime. Good luck with the birdie, and once he settles down, we want pics! :D
