Okay, I was at the shelter today brushing and loving a beautiful Maine Coon Cross named "Donna". She laid on the table while I clipped her nails, purring the whole time. A precious little girl.

In walks this kid saying "Oh Speckles!!! I miss you SO much!!" I stopped what I was doing and looked at her and said, "Her name is Donna, at least that's what it says on her paperwork."

She proceeded to tell me that the cat's name was Speckles and she knows, because it WAS her cat.

"If she's YOUR cat, what is she doing here", I asked. She said "Well, she kept having babies, so my boyfriend's father told us to either get rid of IT or he was going to dump it off on the street".

I could not keep my mouth shut. "You certainly are dumber than you look!!", I said. "All you needed to do was have her spayed!!!" She said "Oh well, I kept one of her kittens." Like THAT is supposed to make it okay that the cat was in the shelter. "And I supposed THAT kitten is also not spayed."

She said, "Well, not yet."

I then told her that not only was her boyfriend a friggin loser, but he was an idiot and so was his father.

I found out later on from one of the employees of the shelter that the girl and her boyfriend were there doing community service because they committed a crime.

*sighs, shakes head, rolls eyes* Those two are TOO STUPID TO LIVE!!!

I will be keeping an eye on "Donna" the kitty. What idiots!

I know what your feeling!

It's so hard for me to keep my mouth shut.

When I worked at a Humane Society in Maine (where I grew up) I knew an aweful lot of people who came in there.
And I would have to tell all the ladies in the office who actually delt with the adoption papers to NOT adopt out to these people, and just make up any old excuse as to why they could not have an animal at this time.

Most of them were druggies whom were in trouble with the law a lot, frequently left home for days on end, what would happen to the cats, and their food, their litter box, love and affection? I'm sure they would be let outdoors, never get fixed, and have lots of babies (just like my friends who DID manage to get cats unfortunatly.)

Way to go! Why some people get an animal is totally beyond me. I volunteer at our local Humane Society and there was a dog there a couple of weeks ago who had been dumped on a busy highway in a burlap bag. He was a sweet little beagle mix. He has been adopted (by someone decent, I hope). Just when you think people can't get any stupider, you hear more.

Donna,

Thankyou for saying something to that person.

You never know, if your words reached their small underused brain, they might try to think about what you said one day. :)

These type of people want me to bring back licensing for ALL pets.

I would gladly pay a yearly fee for my cats, in order to prevent previously neglectful owners from adopting again.

(I add 'not altering' an animal as neglectful, unless they are a breeders animal.)

the Late great Jack Webb , of Dragnt Fame once said that American society was going to be in Serios Trouble because we were raising a Society where everyone has rights , but no RESPONSIBILITIES! And he was right as people want the dogs and cats , but only until the animal needs them , and then it is Goodbye Pet , especially Cats who are seen as being aloof!:( :( :( :( GRRRRR!

Ugh, I encounter idiots like these at work every day. Its really too bad I have to keep my mouth shut. I do get away with being snippy at them though. I always get really mad but also glad that the animal is in better hands now.

I just hate to think how many other people are out there with poor animals who don't have the good fortune of ending up at a nice shelter :(

I agree 100%. People should only be allowed by law to have pets if they are able to give it proper care AND get it sprayed or neutered....

My heart goes out to beautiful Donna, the poor darling. I hope she finds a decent furrever home soon, and my prayers go out to her beautfiul kitten.

I am very worried about the child. Evidently, he has an iota of decency in him and loves his cat very much. I am worried for the way they are treating him, especially the boyfriend. Do not be surprised if the child is being physically or sexually abused by the boyfriend and/or his mother. This just doesn't sound right. The type of unscrupulous person who would treat a cat in such a way - how the hell would he be treating the boy?????

Good on you for saying something, Donna. I really think that Darwin was on to something. Unfortunately, instead of the reprehensibly stupid and evil people sullying the gene pool of the decent, reality is the converse - it is the decent people diluting the vile filth of the rotten people's gene pool.

We are a dying breed. Apathy and cruelty are the cancer of society, one from which I think it will never recover. I hate to sound so pessimistic, but concepts such as chivalry, honour, politeness and decency are being forgotten.

And the most important one. Accountability. Where has it gone?
