Does anyone have pictures of this colour of cat. I am unsure of the difference in colours, even if they are different. I have one cat, a 16 year black and white, and am thinking of adopting another kitten or cat this spring .

A tortoiseshell comes in 2 kinds. A dilute tortie is grey with patches of tan and white. A true tortie is dark with whisps of black and tan.

A calico is mostly white with patches of grey, tan and black.

Here is the birthday girl, Mollie Rose (Rosie, the Divine Miss "M"). She's 9 years old today!!

Here's Little Mews Faberge (aka "Shortie). She's a Munchkin.

I know that someone else will be able to find pictures for you, but in the mean time:
CALICO is red and black individual patches on white

TORTOISE SHELL is black and red together (like with stripes or mottled) with or without some white

I don't have any pictures of my RB family torti cat (I need a scanner)

But here is our she-devil Milly. She is either a tortie with white or a calico (I'm not sure)

I found my original 8 year old cat (George) didn't welcome our new 10 month cat (Milly)

But when we adopted a second young cat (Milo). Things calmed down. Milly & Milo play and George enjoys watching them.

It might be an idea to adopt two younger cats, at the same time. :)

Calico's whether diluted or regular always have white. Tortoiseshell's have no white (unless it's just a spot).

Welcome to Pet Talk Sadie. :) I'm sure you'll love it here. I don't have any Tortie's or Calico's but every ones pics are gorgeous. :D

I forgot to tell you about torties....have you heard about their "tortietude"? They have a special attitude, different from most other cats.

Noel has a tortietude, but she's a total doll!

I'm sure you'll love your new tortie when you get her. :)

I think my Aysche (1984 - 1986) was a tortie. This is her:

Those tortoiseshell marked cats are fantastic, so subtle in the markings, but I adore the calicos. Unbelieveable colour. I shall borrow a neighbours kitten and see how my old cat reacts to it and judge from that.
Thanks everyone for the pictures and the help.

That's what she is all right! She sure is a cutie! Our dilute is a male, and pretty rare!

This is Peanut, my tortie on white. I always thought she was a calico until this was discussed on a different thread where I found out she is a tortie on white. I think the main difference is that calicos have big splotches of individual colors - and have a lot of white on them whereas a torties color is much more "blended" together and there is often no white on them.

Yes, you're right! Peanut is absolutely gorgeous. I'm afraid if you lived closer I'd steal her!
