Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone had tips or tricks for teaching a dog to give a hand shake. We didn't cover that in basic obedience, and I couldn't find any thread on Pet Talk that dealt with it.

My Dogue de Bordeaux always paws at me when we play around, so I figure it's about time to teach him!

Here is a picture of my Big Lug Romeo....

Always playing around!!

Thanks for the help!

Awww  What a cutie!!!

I would imagine that you would just say "shake" or something like that, and then take their paw in your hand, and praise them. My dog knew how to do this right away, we didn't have to train her to do it lol. I'm not sure how my other dog learned though, I can't remember.

Awwww! Romeo is ADORABLE!!!!

When I taught Malone to shake, I held a treat in my hand and gave the command to shake. As soon as he pawed at my hand, he got the treat. It didn't take very long for him to get it, either.

I hope this helps!!!

No advice, treats usually work for me with anything for my dogs!!!
However, Romeo is gorgeous!!!!
I just read an article in Dog Fancy about Dogues, and I think they are stunning!!!
Share more pictures of Romeo when you can!!!!!

I've always love that breed, they seem like they could be big ol' babies:D Hope you stick around and share more pics and stories about Romeo!
And as for the shake-I taught ours by saying the command "shake" then picking up their paw-give a treat & repeat.
It didn't take long at all before they picked it up, maybe a few minutes and they understood. Good luck, I'm sure Romeo is a smartie & he'll pick it up fast:D

Welcome Trav08! Romeo is awesome (and what a great name!) I think the dog in Turner and Hooch was also a Dogue de Bordeaux and I loved that movie! My son taught Bella to 'shake hands' and I have no idea how he did it. I am sure if treats are offered they learn very quickly! ;) I would love to see more pictures of Romeo and hear more about him!

Cookiebaker I keep forgetting to tell you how much I LOVE your new signature. ;)

Thanks for all the tips. I started off by saying shake and grabbing his paw. Then I would praise him and give a treat. Did this for 5 minutes or so, but couldn't get him to do it on his own. I know that I need to spend more time than this to get this trick down.

Well I always enjoy sharing pictures of Romeo so here you go....
