View Full Version : Cataract Surgery?
Reece had his yearly check up the other day. His cataracts are getting worse :( He's just 3 years old but he's had them since I adopted him. The vet is pretty sure he was born with them. I thought it was just in one eye but she checked his other eye and said it was pretty foggy. She said he responds to light but probably doesn't see as well as I was thinking :( :( :( She gave me a referral to an eye specialist and we are going to see if he needs surgery.
Anybody have dogs with juvenile cataracts? :(

I don't have any experience with juvenile cataracts, but I doubt if there's a lot of difference. Cataracts are cataracts. Becauce Reece is so young, the chance of surgery being successful should be good. I'd definitely see an opthamologist soon.
Bear had cataracts and I let them go too long so they couldn't be removed.
There is a lot of info on the Blind Dog board. Several people have written with their experiences with surgery and without. The URL is
[email protected] (I think!)

My cousin's dog has really bad cataracts...her left eye is completely blind...and her other one is going...I hope Reece does ok...get her checked out by the eye specialist soon!
Aly,
My next door neighbor had her senior dog eyes done.
First was the consultation from the specialist
to see whether or not the dog was a good candidate.
Than surgery on one eye and later on the other one
was done.
I can not belive the difference, in her dogs
personality.
From a dog that walked "very" slow, the cataract
surgery made her act like a puppy.

Good Luck, Reece!
{{{Huggs}}} Aly!
Thanks guys :)
Its such a constant battle with his anal glands and ear infections .. and now his sight might be going. I feel so bad for him :( He sometimes bumps into things but I STUPIDLY never thought it was his sight. I just thought his hair got in the way cause he's got a lot of head fuzz. I've asked vets about his cataracts in the past and this is the first one to tell me to go to a specialist. I'm sort of mad that no other vet has felt it was a concern.

I hope that Reece man can have the surgery done without any problems. He would probably be a changed man:D Good luck Aly.
Our new vet told us Angus has slight to moderate cataracts, but at this time they are nothing to worry about, thank goodness!

Poor little Reece man!!!!
Prayers on the way for him.
Like Mruffruff said he his still a young pup ... so if he does have surgery he should pull through with flying colors!
When will you go see the eye specialist? Keep us updated.
