View Full Version : Micah (Vet Dilemma)

Micah is STILL having his problems. :(
I haven't taken him back to the vet since I spoke to the woman (not a vet) on the phone over a week ago. We've done everything they've said to do and while I'm sure they could do something else, I wonder if I should go back to the "Cats Only" vet.
My thinking is that a "cats only" vet would be more specialized in cat diseases.
BUT....the vet at our current place did say that Micah most likely had Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I found a link somewhere online that talked about a new drug for cats with IBD, should I suggest that??
I don't know which to do. What do you all think??

It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion. Seems to me that things should have improved a little bit - at the very least. I would tell the new vet everything you've done and everything the other vet said, and tell him you're looking for a second opinion since nothing seems to be working. You never know, he might have come across this before and have more experience with it and be able to help a little more.
Poor Micah - I sure hope you find something that can help the little sweety.

Thanks! :)
Luckily he seems OK otherwise. He's playful and really loving. Its just during his litter box times that I can tell he's not doing well.
When he cleans down there, he's soooooo gentle, it breaks my heart...poor guy!! :(
I just made an appointment for him on Wednesday after work. The lady on the phone is calling our regular vet to get his records...cool, huh?

Yeah, I think this is for the best. It's kinda like when your regular doctor couldn't do anything for you, you went to a specialist. So now Micah gets to go to a specialist too. :) He sure knows how to bond with his mommy. ;) :D

Thinking of Micah.
Hope your second opinion helps.

I hope you can get to the bottom of Micah's problem. it is heartbreaking when they have medical problems and you feel like nothing you do helps them.:(

Poor baby! I think you're doing the right thing on getting another opinion. A "cats only" vet might have some insights the reg. vet didn't, after all, Micah is special, and deserves a special vet! :D
But I really hope he starts getting better soon, poor little guy.

Micah, I was hoping you were getting better but it seems you still need some more TLC from the whitecoats. I'm praying for you sweetheart!!

Kelly, I'm so sorry to hear that Micah is still not feeling well. :( I sure hope that a second opinion will help you find out what the problem is and that it's treatable. Prayers and positive thoughts are on the way.

I think it is very good to get a second opinion. And the vet sounds very responsible as he is asking for the records so he won't have to repeat all of the tests.
I hope sweet Micah will feel better soon.

Thanks guys! :)
I found a good site: http://www.wellvet.com/diarrheacats.html
I'm going to ask the vet about Ultra Clear Sustain, Lactobacillus Sporogenes, Gastriplex & Dipan 9. I'm hoping the vet has heard of this stuff. :)

I'm so sorry to hear that Micah is not feeling well. I hope the new vet will be able to find out what the problem is and treat it. You are both in my thoughts and prayers.

I am not sure what has been wrong with your kitty, but I hope she is feeling better soon...I take my cats to an all cat clinic for various of reasons, and there is no other place I will go...

Kelly,
I'm sorry Micah isn't doing well. I think you're wise to get a second opinion. Vets aren't infallible and can sometimes miss something a second opinion might pick up.
You and Micah are in my thoughts. Please let us know how you guys make out.

I took Micah to the vet yesterday. Dr. Beth thinks he has Inflamatory Bowel Disease for sure. She couldn't get enough for a fecal, so I have to bring in a sample to rule out any parasites.
She put him on a strict diet of Science Diet Z/D. Its a low allergin food. So hopefully that'll help. He really likes his new food, what a relief! :)
She also noticed that his gums were inflammed as well. She said that his breed was notorious for needing yearly cleanings. So, guess he'll be going in for that too.
I have to tell you, this latest vet visit was a total bonding experience for me. He feels so safe with me in my arms. He wanted to be held the whole time and be near me, especially when the vet and techs had to do their thing. He kept hiding his little head. Poor thing. But, he was friendly to me and even let me put him in his carrier with no hassle at all! GOOD boy!! ;)
I asked about his coat. He's a gorgeous cat, but he's not shiny like the rest of our cats. She said he's probably not getting enough nutrients. Hopefully he'll get all better with his special food. I'm praying for his sweet little body.
Thanks for all your kind words and prayers. I know they help!

That's wonderful news (the 11 oz part)! I'm sure being in a loving home made a world a difference with that.
Peanut was hiding her head big time during the last visit. She always does that when she comes up by me when I'm on the computer too, even though there's nothing to be afraid of at that time.
I sure hope the new food helps him. And it makes sense that he's not getting enough nutrients if his bowels are not working correctly.
But is that all she prescribed was the food? I guess that makes sense until she finds out if there are any parasites involved.
Good luck with everything, and please keep us updated. Hugs and smoochies to sweet little Micah - he's such a good boy. :)

If it is IBD will he need medicine or just special food? Is it curable or just treatable? (obviously, I don't know anything about this disease)
Hope Micah continues to just get better and better.

Its almost exactly like my disease. (Crohn's is the most severe of IBD) He'll always have it, but it can be treated with food and meds. She didn't mention meds yet, I think she wants to completely rule out parasites first.
So, long story short, its treatable, not curable.

I am glad to hear that you can do something for Micah.
After our holidays, Filou will have to go for tooth cleaning too (he goes every one and a half year).
I am convinced once the food works, Micah's fur will begin to shine. Due to the ticking, Abys can nearly sparkle:D
Headbumpies from Filou:)
