I went to the Gabraltar Trade Center yesterday. It's a huge flea market full of vendors, including someone who sells pets (puppies, ferrets, birds, etc.) They had two african grey parrots in a cage (I THINK that's what they were). One of the birds seemed alert. The other one was laying down on the bottom of the cage. I called it to the vendor's attention. She told me that they were babies (pointing out the fine baby feathers) and that the bird was sleeping. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I've had a Blue Front Amazon and NEVER, EVER saw him laying down on the bottom of the cage to sleep.

What do you guys think?? Should I call Animal Control on them?? I really want to get this bird help if, in fact, he is sick and not sleeping like this lady said.

Thanks for your help!

This happens frequently when we raise baby birds at work. They DO sleep lying down sometimes!! We have had the Humane Society called on us so many times for perfectly healthy birds.....

I don't know much about baby birds (unweaned) but I've had my birds since they were 3 months old and they NEVER slept like that. I have a friend though, who's parakeet sleeps upsidedown.:rolleyes: When they first brought him home and checked on him at night, they freaked out seeing him upsidedown with his eyes closed. Later they discovered it was his sleeping *style.* I never heard of birds lying on the ground though, and from what I know, its not normal. I don't know about baby birds and how they sleep though. Maybe you should call an avian vet and ask (as a general question) and see what they say. If they say its sounds like something's wrong, I think you should try to help the bird. Keep us updated!
