Will this be safe??

I was wanting to take Tinky and Jupiter out on their harnasses tomorrow BUT.............

Tuesday I sprayed some weed killer on the lawn... and yesterday it rained really really hard. Do you think it will be safe for them to outside and chew on the grass? Or do you think the weed killer will have washed off enough?

I want to take them out but I don't want them to get sick...

Sara, I'm just winging this, but I think tomorrow is too soon. Maybe one of the gardening experts can step in here, but better safe than sorry is a good rule of thumb in my opinion...

I certainly don't want to tell you anything dangerous, but last year our lawn was fertilzed in error (they were supposed to dout next door neighbor's) I called and complained and complained, andthey told me, it should be perfectly safe in 24-48 hours and I could speed that along with watering. ( Yeah, and what was I supposed to do with 2 large dogs inthe mean time?)

I had to let them out, set up the sprinkler for awhile and did the best I could to get is dissolved. We had no issues ( Course I don't know if cats are more or less resiliant then dogs...)

Sara, I'd also wait a while before you let your cats go outside in the grass. It's better to be safe than sorry. I'd also call someone who is an expert in this sort of thing. Good luck and please let us know what info you get.

it is just supposed to be a pretty day tomorrow... I was hoping to be able to take them out....... but better safe than sorry...:(

I would wait for 72 hours even after a big rain storm. Reason is - that plants absorb the poison almost imediately and that its probably still in the plants that were sprayed on. If you leave it for a few days, usually the toxicisity will go down and that it will be safe for your cats. I know that Bastet doesn't go outside without my supervision and definately not after the next door neighbours have sprayed anything.

Fertilisers to pets are just as dangerous as weed killer is. Some animals can't absorb the lime and other *enriching* soil substances. They end up affecting the liver and kidneys. So if you decide to fertilise, use a natural, water soluble one that immediately goes into the soil.

The "rule of thumb" I have always heard is water it down real well and then wait until it is completely dry before letting your pets out. I think you are probably safe at this point, if the sun comes out and the grass dries, but if you are the least bit worried, I would wait. I would hate for either of those beautiful babies to get sick!!! :)
