I know if the bird has a blue nostril it is male,

and if the bird has a brown nostril it is female.

but what if the nostril is in the middle.. example..

LOL! If its in the middle, it means its a baby and hasn't matured yet. You will have to wait a few months to find out for sure. Spring is only a baby. :) That's the color all budgies have whether male or female, when very young.

All the little ones we have at work are like that, and I am thinking about making a sign with a chart explaining that they are babies so we can't sex them. I always feel bad because inevitably half of the people who want our budgies want a friend for an existing budgie, and I just don't know. ^_^ They're so cute though, especially when we give them Raspberries!! SO MESSY!

It's weird, we were able to tell our birds' sex very easily at the pet store. And they were even young, about 8 weeks or whatever the normal age would be. I can't remember anymore

I'm pretty sure that Dexter is a male because his cere is turning more blue than brown....and also the people at the pet store were saying he was a male.

the people att the petstore don't know very much about animals....when i got my budgie at petco they told me that "i should be proud for choosing a male keet!" i lookded up on the internet about how to tell what it was and it was a female....that is not the only time that people at petstores were wrong.....once i heard a lady ask if she should brred her rabbit because it seemed stressed out from a move......they said yes and they talked her into buying a 3o$ bunny............that was a petland.......that's why i take things into my own hands when it comes to knowing things about animals before i go into a petstore.....lol
