My dumbo cinnamon doe has started nestbuilding so labor should be onit's way shortly...could be as soon as a few minutes or just a couple days, but I think it will be tonight. :D

She is absolutely HUGE so she should have a big litter. I can't wait to see her cute little babies! :D

Ok she's in the birthing tank now and I gave her some fresh torn up toilet paper and I will shred a few paper towels in a bit. She is a little squeely so I know the time is soon. Of course she could just be fooling me, but with her tummy size she is going to have them soon. She doesn't look as though she is in labor yet, but her building a nest is a good sign.

She is an older doe, around 8 months so this litter will have to be watched very carefully during the birth so I can watch for complications. We have a Csection lined up just in case. I've never bred a doe this late so I'm a little nervous. Wish us luck!!!

Is one of your ratties? :)
What's "doe"?
Good luck!

Well maybe you should just log off & take care of her and the babies. We'll understand if we don't get a blow by blow account.
What with the birthing, house cleaning, taking care of your toddler
and all taking care of other pets, you probably have your hands
full. Don't worry about us, we'll probably be here when you finish
taking care of all your chores, say about 9p.m. Good luck.

Yes this is one of my ratties. :) I have been awaiting this litter for a long time as the waiting list for this one was all filled up. I am expecting fawn and agouti dumbos, with a possibility of blue if Meeko carries.

A 'doe" is a female rat. :)

No chores for me today! Today is my relaxing day. Dylan is with his grandma, the house is clean and I get to relax. :D I've been sick the past few days so haven't been doing much. And since I have strep I can't get near the ratties too much unless I wear a mask, so I will just be checking in on the doe from time to time. With this being her first time I don't want to stand guard over her every second.

And who takes all day to clean anyway? :rolleyes:My son is a good child. He's usually sitting on my lap as I type, or surfing the web with me to see what's going on at Playhouse Disney online as he loves to play the games on the Stanley site. He keeps himself busy reading his books, stacking his blocks etc. I couldn't have asked for a better baby. :D He's such a joy to have around! ANd just because I post throughout the day doesn't mean I don't do things. I am always logged in and PT is always up so if I want to post I have easy access lol.

I think I will go clean the bathroom though (it's the only thing that's not clean), than take a nap! :D

How come this is the only rat you made a thread about nestbuilding? That doesn't make any since. I think you should log off of Pet Talk and pay more attention to your rat, in case it has complications.

Okay, I admit I know NOTHING about rats, but the new mom is 8 months old?!? And this is old for breeding?!? I know rats probally have shorter life span then other animals, but this seems young to me....

Liz- Some ppl just don't get it :)

What doesn't make sense? I don't have to create a thread about every single one of my rats labors... Also she is NOT in labor yet. I check on her every few minutes. I am not going to constantly eyeball her, that can make her stressed out. If she has complications I will know, she is just a few steps away in the next room. Again I am NOT going to go check on her every second and stress her out. This is her first litter so she is not used to what changes are going on.

I am not sure if you should desturb her to much luckies, I know with hamsters if they have pups they cannot be bugged because they might eat them or kill them. I know nothing about ratties so I bet u know what you are doing though, good luck with the babies. :D..

This is the last month I would feel comfortable doing a safe breeding with her. She had to be bred because she is old. A good breeding range for first litters is around 4 to 8 months. Perferably around 6 months of age. The older the doe the greater the possibility of complications.

And please, what don't I get? That today is my free day? I don't know how long you people think it takes to clean house or feed pets or whatever, but not as long as you think to believe.

I won't disturb her too much during the birthing process, especially since she is a first time mother. Rats rarely eat their young. I handle all my babies shortly after birth to make sure theit cords have been cut, they have been properly cleaned and check to see if milk bands are visible.

I have bred several litters, I know what I am doing. This litter is very exciting for me because both of the parents have such sweet temperaments and are very healthy. :D

Yes you are right. But if I wanted to breed her, which I did, this was the last chance I had to do a safe breeding. I am not going to breed an older doe if there is too big a chance of her having complications. 8 months is fine, but I won't go any later than that for a first time breeding.

YAY I love lil pink babies. I would LOVE to see the birthing pics :)... yay. Cuddles has always had her pups at night or while I was at school, so I missed her birthing time 2 times. But u cant disturb hammies while they are giving birth or while they have them because they will kill and eat them. -yuk-. you cant even touch the babies hamsters intill they pups are 2 weeks old at the least. :)

I'm going to start a new thread. I'll use it to post updates every day, sort of like a rat kitten developement thread so you can see how they change from day to day. It's really rather amazing!

Now I need to do this soon because I am making chicken fajitas and need to clean my bucks cage. :p

Congrats!!!! :D :) ;) I can't wait to see pics of those little ratties!!! :D Pics pics pics!
What colours and patterns are you expecting?
I'm guessing that you are making a new thread right now lol.

I read that the best time to breed is between 4-7 months, and that after it is more difficult because the birth canal fuses together properly  Anyways, 8 months isn't that bad an age, I'm glad it worked out accordingly! :)

tikeyas_mom
04-07-2003, 09:22 PM
does it matter how old the male rat is??

wolfsoul
04-07-2003, 09:28 PM
I think the age of the male would only affect the amount of sperm produced when mating, therefore determining the amount of kittens ;)

One time I read about a female rat who was 3 years old, and the people bought it and put it with their males, thinking it would be fine because she was so old, and she got pregnant  But her babies were healthy, and she was fine, so it was a happy ending! :)

LOL The funniest past few minutes just happened lol!

I was typing my new thread and my neighbor came over and told us we had deer in the backyard so I got up and ran outside lol just in time to see O'Malley chasing the deer around. It was the funniest thing, he would chase the deer and then they would come sniff him and he would try to pounce them again. I wish I had a zoom camera to catch the action lol. I dn't know if the pics came out but if they did I will post them. The deer were SO cute! :D

So then since Morgan was out there we played for a little bit in the grass and than we took some pictures of her. She's such a photogenic pooch. We just planted some flowers and stuff so I had her pose in front of those...even though she pretty much trampled them all already lol. :p

Ok NOW I will go start the new thread hahaha.

That's odd...Oreo, Skittles, and Nugget built their nests days before they give birth.  LOL, mine are goofy so I can see why they would build it days before. (The tum-tum is so cute.) :p :p

Luckies... u said u can see them moving in her tummy. When I first bred Rattus, I was scared to touch her cause for a couple of days I could see many lumps swimming around her belly, I found it neat & creepy. But I decided to hold her only once to see if I coulf feel them swimming around in her. I put my hand into her cage & let her get on my hand on her own. I then cuped her with both hands & it had to be the freakest feeling ever. But it didn't seem to bother her cause she fell asleep in my hands (which was a first & last). That night she had her babies & there was 19!! I was soo scared cause I didn't know if she was able to feed them all. so twice a day I split the babies into 3 groups & left one group with Rattus for an hour to feed & held the other 2 groups with me, once all 3 groups had a good drink, I left them all with Rattus. All 19 survived until they were able to feed themselves. Rattus's litters were always huge, one was 18, 20, & 21, thats all I bred her, & then she became a nanny for unwanted litters (she did that on her own), but I had to put her in a cage by herleft cause she was taking care of too many babies & wasn't doing well... Rattus loved being a mother too much... & she hated being way from the babies, everytime I took her out of her cage she would hop off my bed & try to get into the cage with the babies... So I waited until her last litter was big enough not fo fit through bars & I picked the one that looked like her daddy & stuck her with Rattus to make her stop breaking out of her cage & try breaking into the babies cage... I named the baby girl Rat & Rat turned into her mother, just what I needed, 2 baby lovers... OI I refused to bred Rat a second time, I just het her & Rattus nanny the negelcted ones & motherless ones & the runts. It was the only way I could calm those 2 down & stop distroying my cages... Silly Silly Girls!!
