New GSD rescue in IL

On Saturday, the Northern Illinois German Shepherd Dog Rescue had attended it's first event. Remember when I became a foster for GSD Rescue, Inc. and said that I wish the area coordinator would start up something closer to my area. Well, she did!!!

It is a new GSD rescue and the paperwork is still in the works, but the name is getting out there. At the Vet Tech Program Open House at the Junior College NIGSDRescue was there.

The very sad thing was that yesterday a 9 year old female GSD named Isis was turned over. I had the privilege of taking care of her during the open house. She was really shedding and is in desperate need of a bath, brushing and nail clipping. She was very sweet, though. She will be staying with her family til she is adopted. What breaks my heart is that after 9 years, a family decides they don't have enough time for her. :confused: :( When I took her out for potty breaks, she tried to lead me to the area where her owner parked to drop her off. How heartbreaking.
Many of the people commented on how could someone give up a 9 year old dog....I know I sure couldn't .....ask Killian...:(

I often wonder how people can just abandon their dogs...our Spot was left when behind when his family moved, after being with them for 2 1/2 yrs and my mom's newest addition, Jack, was left behind after 4 years :mad: I guess I'm glad I don't understand....

never worthy of her. This IS heartbreaking to witness.:(

That does sound so sad, but at least you were there to show her some love. I don't understand it either, would you leave one of your kids, or your husband behind if you moved???

Isis got a lot of lovin' at the event. So many people stopped to pet her. They said that she never got out a lot, but she was great with everyone. She did love her goodies, though (read chunky). I had goodies in a little baggie in my purse. After I gave her one, she knew where they were. So I put my purse on the floor under a chair next to the podium. She stuck her head under the chair and pulled a goodie out of the bag. I said that's ok, you can have one......then she proceed to pull the whole bag out of my purse and chow down on most of them!!!! What a smarty she is! We had to laugh. Also she was not too gentle taking the goodies from our hands (read ouch!).

So she's food motivated. Good....Since she's so smart
(She's a GSD afterall:D ) , she could be easily trained to take
her treats "easy". If they could throw away a dog, that's nine
yrs old, like yesterday's news they probably never spent time
with Iris, or bonded at all. For any reason short of death, it's
a betrayal of trust with the animal. Poor baby. She will probably
morn the people who left her there.:(

Thankfully you were there Sue, to shower her with love and attention. It's unpathomable that a family could turn in a dog after all those years. It's unforgivable. I could never live with myself. And of course, the loyal pup is still looking for her family:(:( And what great news Sue re: the new rescue group! ***Sue speaks......people act!!:)***

When people turn dogs over because they are moving - it just makes me so MAD!! :mad: :mad:

When we moved two years ago, I moved my 11 year old chesapeake, 4 year old dachshund and 2 year old mixed breed. You know something - they adapted pretty doggone well. Peach had the most trouble because she could see very well and the basement stairs scared her, but after we put a baby gate across them she was fine. Dogs don't care where they live as long as they are with their people.

When you adopt an animal, it should be for life (and just in case go first, talk to your family now amd make sure they will make arrangements for the animal to be taken care of for the rest of its' life).

That's a "pet peeve" we can all agree on!!!! Loving and caring for a pet is a LIFETIME commitment!

Oh Liz you are right. I guess it is good that dogs don't understand, although I do think they know more than we give them credit for. Sue, I am so glad you were there for her. Do you have any pictures? This is just so sad and absolutely defies logic!

Sorry, no pics on the poor girl yet. I didn't know she was going to be there. She is still waiting with her family til someone adopts her. So sad.

Since she had to stay with her family til the new rescue got set up, there was some talking going back and forth. They decided that they would KEEP her. Woohoo!! (I think the husband wanted to keep her anyway!!)

Now in rescue, we have a male, a female mom and her 7 four week old puppies! I can't wait til they are showcased and I get to help out with them!! As soon as our website is up and running, I'll let you know. Ahhhh, puppy breath. She and the pups were pulled from a kill shelter.

No pics on the Mom and pups yet. Today they were to have been picked up from the kill shelter and transported to Warrenville for foster care. As soon as we get pics, I'll post them!!
