We used to be owned by teddy bear hamsters...the first one was Nibbles, and after she passed on, we had Buffy.

Nibbles was so tame. When I couldn't sleep at night (which was quite often) I would sit in the bathroom (where there was no place that she could get lost) and let her run free. In the summer time, I would take her outside and let her run in the tall grass. And when I wore overalls, I would put her in the chest pocket and she would cozy up and fall asleep there. She was such a great pal!

One time, I was letting her run free in the bathroom & I was sitting on the floor reading a book, and keeping an eye on her. Well, I guess I wasn't watching close enough because when I wasn't looking, she had chewed a huge hole right through the bottom of my skirt. I guess she thought it would make a nice cozy bed! :)

Buffy wasn't nearly as tame as that, though she did have her cuddly moments. She tended to be skittish and easily frightened. I spent countless number of hours with her, but she never warmed up as much as Nibbles did.

I miss my hammies a lot, but with the cat & dog I don't think I would have too much time to spend with them. And also, I always am heartbroken at the shortness of their lifespan. But maybe it's "better to have loved & lost, then to never have loved at all".

I only have three rats. My female rat is at my dad's house though. I call her mine, but I'm going to stop pretty soon because my dad is being a jerk and I haven't been to his house for a long time :( So I haven't seen her in ages :( But oh well..

I had a gerbil named Icarus, but she had a heart attack and is now RB, so when I got my little ratty, I named him Icarus II to keep the memory alive! :)

I own 7 rats: 5 females and 2 males

Peanut, Nugget, Sweet Pea, Chloe, Daisy, Fred, and Oscar

P.S. Rats are OMNIVORES! It is very wise to feed your rats meat from time to time to keep them nice and healthy. My guys get a little bit of deli meats (turkey, ham, etc), hamburger (cooked), and other yummy meat items. Just the other day they had some roast beef for dinner/a treat.

We used to have a "pet" squirrel at our old house too. We named him Stumpy because half of his tail was missing; it was stumpy. :D

They are OMNIvores though. I will keep dogs and cats (carnivores), but I don't want any more bunnies, mice, guinea pigs, hams, etc.

Sheesh, I never said rats were herbivores! One of my favorite treats to take to the girls is mealworms!

"They are OMNIvores though. I will keep dogs and cats (carnivores), but I don't want any more bunnies, mice, guinea pigs, hams, etc."

No, actually dogs (like humans) are omnivores, not carnivores, they can survive without meat. Cats however require a few things that are only found in flesh, like taurine. (So if you want vegan/vegetarian cats they have to have suppliments/food that is fortified with taurine. http://vegancats.com :) "Although Taurine naturally occurs only in animal tissue, synthetic Taurine has been produced on a large scale since about 1930. In fact, many meat-based pet foods utilize synthetic Taurine to meet nutritional requirements as well (most naturally-occurring Taurine is washed away during the rendering process)!")
