When I took Micah to the vet on Monday, she gave him Science Diet I/D because of his persistant diareah (sp?).
He's been on it since Monday night, so almost two full days. He's still having his problems, not a little, but A LOT.
It was David's turn to sleep in the bedroom last night and every time Micah went potty, he cried. :(
I just called the vet and they are prescribing him Flagil (Have no idea if that's even correct) and I'll be bringing him in before Saturday for another look at his eye.
Poor little guy!!
On a happy note, he slept with David last night too!! This morning, before Oliver has a hissy fit, Micah came to the open door and wanted to play with Basie. :) You should have heard him chattering, he was so happy!!

Aw, poor baby :( I hope the medicine will help him feel better soon.
It's soo nice to hear that he's loving with you guys so soon! hopefully your babies will accept him just as quickly once he's well enough to meet them!

I think he'll like the kitties more than us at first. ;) He was so excited to see Basie and Oliver!
I asked the vet for some form of whatever she's giving me for him in a liquid so I can mix it with his food. We can't get that close with him yet. He's still very afraid.

Awwwww.....poor sweet Micah baby!! Hopefully the medicine will help clear up his diarrhea. I'm confident that he and Basie will be good friends. What a sweet little cutie! **hugs**
Let us know how he's doing:)

I hope Micah's diarrhoea clears up quickly, poor boy. But it's great to hear that he's keen to integrate! :)

Poor little guy!
Just make sure you keep an eye on his water intake. He can become dehydrated quickly, especially with him having the runs.

Awww.. is he licking at it? Maybe he will need some kind of cream and a collar (but I suppose that would REALLY freak him out!).
I really hope he's ok :( Poor little guy..

Sometimmes diarrhea is a hard thing to kick. If one food or medicine does not seem to work ask to change to another. I had 3 cats with diarrhea in the last few months and they all took experimantaion to cure it.

Just got back from the vet. They gave me metronidazole liquid. He has to have 1.3 ml twice a day. I hope this one works for him.
I put it in his kitty milk and he enhaled it! ;) GOOD BOY!!
He's being very good about drinking his water, about half a bowl a day.

My ex's aby Prattley had the same problem when I first moved in - It took us 3 months to figure out it was stress related. He was on metronidazole to which helped a little. A year later I got Bastet - Prattley got the same diarheoa thing again - we knew it was stress related but at least this time it wasn't so bad....
Maybe its an aby thing to get stressed and then get really sick with one thing or another?

Abys for sure are sensitive cats and to my opinion a little stubborn too. However with the exception of a little peeing on the flour (over all maybe 5 times in the first 3 years) Filou never showed a physical stress symptom.
Coming in to a new group of cats is certainly stress, even if it works out well and so I also hope, Micah will be better soon.

Kelly, I sure hope that Micah gets better soon and that this medicine will help him. I'm so glad that he seems to like your other cats. I can't wait to hear about their introductions. :) Please keep us posted on his condition. I know that my Sunny is a very nervous high strung cat and he's only half aby. He's never had a diarrhea problem though. Good luck. All fingers and paws are crossed for a complete and speedy recovery.

Poor Micah....he's back in the litter box a lot today. Just sitting here at the computer, he's gone potty six times, in three different litter boxes. :( He cries the whole time. :(
I called the vet and we have an appointment for 11:00 am tomorrow. Poor little guy.
The metronidazole didn't really work.
Any ideas??? What he leaves in the litter box are very small, flat pieces, not skinny, like there's a blockage, but you can tell its liquid.

Hi Noah's Mum,
All I can suggest is give him raw chicken and boiled rice until his irritation in his tummy settles down. Sometimes it is the preservatives in the food that affect Aby's tummy's. Bastet can't eat petmeat for that reason because she will chronically (more than twice a day) vomit. It scared me the first time she did that because I thought she was bleeding internally!
We had a mad vet rush and he said that its an alergy to petmeat and to keep her on a diet of chicken and rice for a week. She only vomits if that same preservative is in whatever she is eating. It is usually in processed meats that we eat.
I think you are doing the right thing by going to the vets it could be a blockage as well. Did he go potty at the rescue centre or did he hold it all in? If he held it in it might have compacted and formed a big poop lump in his tum which would give him diaroehha as well. I saw this a lot with kitty's at the rescue centre I volunteered here for a while.
I am sure Micah will be ok.

I'm so sorry to hear about Micah. :( I sure hope that the vet can give him something to make him feel better. All fingers and paws are crossed here. Good luck.

She may be allergic to nitrites. That's what's used in meats.

Micha threw up a lot this morning, I'm very worried. What would cause diareah and throwing up???
He is still playful and loving, no change there.

Anxious, Kelly, to hear what the vet had to say. We're saying prayers for Micah. :(
I know Coccidia causes diarrhea and throwing up. It also sounds like it could be a blockage. Did you check his gums to make sure they're not white? Hopefully its just stress and the vet can figure out how to get him over this quickly.
Let us know when you know anything :(

Are you taking Micah back to the vet? If you have both diarrhea and vomitting, I think I would have him looked at again. Maybe they need to do more tests.
Kelly posted an update in her thread about Micah in Cat General :)

I called the vet this morning after my adventures with Micah and the Imodium to see how long he has to take it. (5 days)
They told me that the fecal suggested Gerardia....its from drinking yucky water somewhere.
What a wonderful breeder!!!!!

Poor Micah. I'm so glad the breeder was finally "done" with him so he could find a good home like yours. Who knows how long he's had that bug and been crying everytime he has to go to the bathroom. Poor little Micah. But now he can get better and live the rest of his life in kitty heaven with you and the rest of your crew. :)

If he has Giardia, the vet will probably give him Flagyl or metronidazole. Giardia is tough to eradicate. We get it every summer in kittens and have to isolate, dose, and clean, clean, clean!

If Micah does have Giardia then it might require more than one course of metronidazole to get rid of it.
We are keeping our fingers and paws crossed that another course of Flagyl or something stronger will take care of it for him.

I called the vet on my way home on Friday and she said to keep giving him the metronidazole twice a day and once he has two days of normalcy, to wean him off the Science Diet I/D. The thing is, he's never had a normal BM.
Aby "owners"....please let me know, do your Aby's ever have a "normal" BM??
I want to call the vet again. How do they know if the Giardia is gone? Do they have to do another fecal test?

Oh dear...was hoping he'd be over the runs by now. When we first got our 2 abys my male Bodhi had runny loose stools for about a month before it settled down. He's been fine ever since. But he is more high-strung and jumpy than Maya. He's a big wuss a.k.a scardey cat. He also grooms himself more than Maya and I'm keeping an eye out for bare patches. We switched him from Science Diet to dry Wysong , which uses human grade quality food and Innova also a premium human grade wet food. Both foods have no additives and preservatives. Good luck and keep us posted. Micah is such a sweetie pie. Is he getting along with the others ? Oh yes, I also gave some plain low fat yoghurt once a day with his meal. This is supposed to help as well.

Plain yogurt, that sounds like a great idea, thank you!
Thanks for the food advice as well. I'll have to check that out. I also need to get to the heathfood store for some Grapefruit Seed Extract that Nakita's meowmee recommended. I think it'll be a good thing for both of us. ;)
He is getting along with the others. He's never been the problem, he LOVES other cats. I just wish they wouldn't be so stuck up about it. Basie is the only one that will allow him to groom him and lay with him.
He's a huge lover boy. I awoke this morning at about 3ish to see him spooning with me under the covers!!! Isn't that CUTE??? :D
The only problem is that my Basie is really put off by him loving HIS mommy! If Basie is with me and Micah comes by and wants love, Basie walks away. :(

Kelly, didn't you post something early on about Micah having problems and that was why he was being turned over to the shelter?
Try this web site.

As I have metioned before, I would contact an Aby breeder. They know exactly what to look for when it comes to problems with their cats. They are usually more than helpful.

Good idea Sas. With Prattly's poo problem it was purely stress related. With a change of diet and some R and R he was fine again.
I hope everything goes well for Micah.
Aby's are really gorgeous cats to have definately Lover boys for sure!

Filou's bloodwork one time came out with some problems. Since then it has been ok.
Yese Abys are lovers:D But in our household it's the same: Filou walks away if you hug Tigris and if Filou hugs you, Tigris will disappear:( There is quite some jealousy between them.
I agree to Sallyanne, try to contact an Aby breeder.
We sen our best thoughts to Micah and nosekissies (Filou) and headbumpies (Tigris)

Hope Micah's doing better soon! And make sure you give Basie equal loving!! Basie has to realize there is enough love to go around.
Before you use the Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE), check with the vet to make sure that Micah's current medication won't give him a reaction to it. It's a great way to boost the immune system and fight off any nasty bugs.
Sending many headbumps and positive vibes your way.
