View Full Version : Has anyone lost a pet? How old was it when you put it down or when it died?
I hope Frisky doesn't have to be put down...but he's older now and i have this feeling that something is going to happen to him? Just curious on the age your cats were. thanks so much.
Well I haven't lost any cats yet thankfully. Trevor is my first cat and he is 10 and Andy is almost 7. I hope I have many more years with them.
I have lost 4 poodles over the years, though, but 3 of the 4 lived long lives. Pumpkin was 17, Peaches was 15, Ashley was 14 and Whitney died suddenly one day while we were at work at the age of 8 1/2 (apparently of a heart attack).
How old is Frisky?

Greetings,
Kizzy was 24 when she we had to put her to sleep. She had been having kidney problems for about two years and I had to give her saline injections for the last year - when she got bad, we were making arrangements for a kidney transplant (I was going to adopt the donor as well...) But when the time came, the vet said that even if it worked, her quality of life wouldn't be good so we decided to let her go. That was five years ago and I still cry when I think of her but I know that it was the right thing to do and that helps a lot...

Here are Cordelia and Ophelia who adopted me soon after Kizzy left - having them made a big difference....

While growing up at home, I had a Siamese cat that lived to the age of 23. My parents brought her home when I was 5 years old and we grew up together.
My best childhood memories are with that cat and when we put her down a little of me went with her.

Inky was 17 when he was put to sleep. Shadow 16 and Cleo was 6 yrs.
Cleo was the only one I could not get over. I decided it was because I was in the room with Inky and Shadow when the vet gave the shot. In Cleo's case, I didn't even know that he had been pts.
For me, it is important to be with the cat when he dies (important for me, I don't think the cat cares).
I lost two of my pets in a sense...I lost them to a divorce!
It's a long story but let me tell you - I miss them so much it hurts.
But I know they're well loved and looked after at least. I still feel guilty though and I hope that somehow they know that I didn't "abandon" them but had no choice to leave...

Our old Tortie cat was 15 years old when she died of a heart-attack in front of me.
Skittles (rat) was around 2 years old when she died in my arms.
Oreo (rat) was around 2 years old when we had to put her to sleep because of her tumor.
Punkin (rat) was one year old when she had to be put to sleep due to heart failure.
Klein Hans (Guniea Pig) died when he was 4 years old, of old age.
The Arabian horse that I took English lessons on for 5 years just passed away a while ago. Pretty bummed about that.

My collie Lassie was 14 when she had to be put down. I was an only child. We added her to our family when I was just 3 years old. I was the final vote for when it was "time". I grew up with her, she was my best friend and sister. I still mourn her at times and I am almost 41 now.
My first cat Smokey died at 14 of renal failure. My second cat Killer Sue died at 15 of intestinal cancer. My husbands first cat Farfel died at 18.

it varies so much. My Who-cat was 14 when she died. I took her to the vet because she didn't seem well and she died right there.:( I believe that she died because our dog that she grew up with died just a few months before that.
I made the decision to have Lucy put down. She was 11 years old when she became sick. X-rays showed a tumor. I opted not to have surgery because she seemed so weak that I believed that she wouldn't have survived it. Did I make the right decision? I honestly don't know - but my decision wasn't guided by finances but by what I believed would give her the best quality of life.
Crystal lived to be 17 or 18, we're not exactly sure how old she was. She was diagnosed with kidney failure two years before she died. We had her on special food and once had to bring her in for some intensive treatments involving a lot of water to flush out her kidneys. We finally had her put down because she became very sick and listless and weak and we realized that we couldn't just keep her alive to waste away.:(
We never know how long we'll have, so try not to worry, and enjoy the time that you have now. Your kitty could be around for a year, or for 10 years:eek: :)

I lost two cats very close together. Queenie (pretty calico mama cat) was killed by a pack of dogs in front of me in November 2002. So awful. Her son Cheetoh developed sublingual carcinoma (cancer under the tongue) the following spring and I babies him for a couple of month, buying him baby food and watering it down so that he could eat it. But one day his misery outweighed his quality of life, and it was time to have him put down. Believe me, being able to alieviate pain in a furkid is easier than watching one die in pain and trauma. God bless my vet who let me usher Cheetoh over the Rainbow Bridge in calm and peace. Next post is the picture of the two of them.

Ok here goes :
Cindy - Dacshund - 7 years old - died of poison from a toad.
Sally - Beagle - 6 months old - died of gunshot wound.
Suzie - 6 years old - rescue - died of mauling by next door neighbour's doberman's. She died in my arms.
Kelly - 10 years old - scottish terrier - rescue - strangled herself.
I don't have dogs now. Seems I am bad luck around them.

Smokey the Elder was diagnosed with a very rare (in cats) cancer in early 1999. Although she wasn't expected to last a month, I had her until Dec. 19 that year. It was only the last week she really crashed. She died in my arms. :( I miss her. When I get a scanner I'll have to get some pictures of her being silly.

My kitty Sidney was almost 15 when his heart gave out.
My Liza girl was 12, and died of kidney cancer.
My favorite cat of ALL TIME was named kedi (aka boo-boo, pretty boy, and knuckle head) was only 8 years old when he died of heart failure. :(

Here is his pic: I'm so sorry to hear about Kedi's death. :( I know just how you feel though because I lost my Pepper on February 3rd of this year. I still don't know what his exact problem was but he was suffering so I had to have him put to sleep. He was almost 6 years old. I miss him so much. :(

My cat Zasper died this past summer, she was only two years old. It was very hard for me. But I've healed with time and now I have so many happy memories of her that I will always think of.

Krazyaboutkatz, I am so sorry to hear about Pepper. I did not know about it (I've been absent form PT for awhile).

When I first got my big hansome cat Tigger, he was a little kitten. kinda looked a little like Duncan. hee hee. But anyways, when we first got him he had just a BEAUTIFUL sister named sandy, and we adopted her too!!! But a couple summers later, it was like a 100 degrees day and sandy and tigger both snuck out. They usally cross the road under it in a pipe. But we think Sandy had a bit of a heat stroke and just wandered onto the road. She got ran over... :( :( :( ... we burried her in the back yard and I miss her sooooo much.... I moved recently though...

So sad to read about all these losses! :( :( :(
I have lost two cats so far.
The first one was my Aysche, a Persian girl, she was only 20 months old when she was diagnosed with FIP. At that point she was so sick already that we decided to put her sleep to make an end to her suffering.
My second cat was my Katz who lived with me for 14 years. She had severe heart problems in the end and fluid in her lungs, and she didn't respond to her medical treatment anymore. Two days after her 14th birthday she collapsed and that was the moment when I knew a decision had to be made... :( The vet agreed that it was the best for her to put her to sleep, it was a very hard decision though.

We had such bad luck with cats throughout my childhood:
Ginger: He was my beautiful little boy! He died at around 6 months after being mauled by a dog.
Whiskey: She lived to about 3 years of age and was hit by a car.
Soda: Beautiful cameo kitty, lived until around age 1. We are not sure what happened, but we got back from a holiday and her ribs were broken and we had to put her down. We think a neighbour kicked her or threw her.
Cola: She was a rescue with some serious emotional issues. After my Mum and Step Dad separated, she stayed with him. However, the vet had to put her down as she had literally gone crazy. She was about 8 years old.
Tequila: Beautiful long haired tux kitty - and the smartest kitty you'd ever meet. She lived three years and we ran over her with our car. Silly cat loved sitting under it. Running over her was the most awful thing that ever happened to me.
:(
Luckily I haven't lost any more kitties since then!

I know you were young at the time and it was pretty traumatic, but those reasons are why many of us prefer to have indoor-only cats.

Yes, I have lost one cat. Her named was murr, she was a tabby. A real sweetheart, she was only 12 or 13yrs old. We had to have her put down because she had kidney faliure. It was the hardest thing to do but I knew she was suffering and she was in pain and it was best to have her put to sleep. It has been 4yrs since she been gone; we had to have her put down in Jan 28, 2000. I still miss her and I think about her all the time.

I will be keeping Pixel totally indoors *unless* she has a yearning desire to go outside (and that will be only when we are home, under close supervision) ... there are just too many dangers out there for our kitties :(

There have been MANY cats that have come and gone in my life, both my own and fosters.
Marina Mar, a beautiful black Turkish Angora wannabe, was born to a feral mother on a boat in a marina, hence her name. Mar is Spanish for ocean. Marina Mar captured my heart when I began volunteering. I had her for 3 1/2 years when she was diagnosed with a suppressed immune system and a disease that caused painful ulcers on her ears and in her nail beds. She went to the Rainbow Bridge in November of 2001.
Casey, my beloved Bubba Dude, also developed cancer in his sinuses. He went to the Rainbow Bridge 2 weeks before Christmas of last year at the age of 7.
My heart aches for them both.

In 1987 when my boyfriend of 13 years and I decided to separate, he promised to look after Casper and OJ. They were brothers - 2 yrs old. He was in a house and the cats were happy there. I was moving into an apartment that did not accept pets. I trusted him. Bad mistake.
Eventually he moved out of the house and Casper was given to a home close by but kept running away. OJ was given to a home on Vancouver Island. Since that was so long ago they are both probably very happy at the RB now. To this day I have their pictures up on my Wall of Fame at work and I've tried to forgive myself for abandoning them. Still hurts to this day.
And now, as I see my Speckles age (she's 16 now) and I know that one day I will have to be prepared for her demise. Believe me, I'll be leaning on all of you then.

I just put down my beloved Goldie last month after a short bout with liver cancer. She was close to 15; I'd had her for a little over 14 years. It was heartbreaking, but at the end she came to me in the middle of the night, fell over onto the bed next to me (her back end had quit working, poor baby) and spent the rest of the night by my side. I knew it was time to do the humane thing. First time I've had to do that. My place just felt so empty afterwards that I knew I'd be getting another cat soon. Now I've got two new kitties and am going through the introduction phase. It's stressful, but I'm glad I got them both - both rescues from AnimalSavers in Sacramento. They are the kitty odd couple. Mitzi is a short, round long-haired calico with very pretty markings and white mitts and Mr. Mishi is a long, skinny red Maine Coon.

I am so sorry about your Goldie. There is nothing anyone can say that really helps. I have been there 3 times now and I still cry at times. Now I have 4 that are all about the same age. I am not so sure that was a smart thing. *smile* But.....congratulations on the 2 new kitties in your life. They sound beautiful. Nothing ever replaces what was lost but the new helps the pain to ease.

oh boy this stuff is very hard to read, so so sad. I lost a cat who was only 2 years old, got sick from infections and fighting with other cats outdoors and had to be put down. I didn't want her outside but he was born outside and was tearing up the house..my parents made him go out. Now I have my own home and will NEVER let my cat outside. It was very hard for me. I lost a Golden Retriever several months ago. He was about 12 years old. He lived a good life. I miss them both. :(
