As some of you know, my friend Kathie is serving in the Army over in Afghanistan. She's a really remarkable woman, who, even as everything is going on around her, still has time to worry about the dogs that visit them at their base. I've attached her email in this post and she said she will get pictures to me hopefully by tonight (my time).

Hey Adge,
Do you know anyone who might want a dog? We have a couple of dogs here on
the compound and the vets are threatening to either euthenize them or take
them out to the desert to fend for themselves.

There are 2 I'm concerned about. One is Sapper, the dog who hangs out in
our office. Supposedly there is someone who is taking her, but that is not
certain. The other is Yoda, who is my favorite. She is a rather
"interesting"-looking dog. She is a cream color, with a very slender,
greyhound-like head and very thin legs and feet. She is a quiet dog and
somewhat timid. I would like to keep her, but they need to be out of here
in 3 weeks. Both are good dogs, but I have a soft spot for Yoda, probably
b/c she is the one who gets picked on b/c she has no tail.

Anyway, if someone would be willing to pick the dog up at the airport, I
would have them given their shots, spayed, and given a check-up by the vets
here. I would even pay for the shipping back to the States. I simply like
the dogs and would like to see them given a chance at a nice life.

I have never seen either of them around children, but they are friendly and
would do well if given a good home where they wouldn't have to fight for
their food or rummage through the garbage.

I have to leave for my new assignment this week, but one of the vets here
would be willing to handle shipping for me.

I also have pictures of the dogs, in case someone is interested in either of
them. Thanks!

Kathryn

I'd take Yoda myself, but living in an apartment with Seven and my friends Great Dane Maximus while she recovers from a car accident, there really is no room left at the inn right now.

Hopefully I can find someone to adopt this dog. She's grown really fond of her and Kathie being reassigned to another part of Afghanistan, she won't be able to watch out for her anymore.

Any suggestions would help. She's willing to pay for everything to keep Yoda from being put down. If there are any questions or messages you want me to forward on to her, either post them here, PM me or email me. It should be in my profile.

Thanks,
Adrian

I'm at a loss. I wish I could take them but I just don't have room for any more dogs. :(

What kind of dog is Sapper? If she a pure breed or close? I wonder if a rescue would take her once she got to the States.

Let me know if no one takes the dogs. I could probably get them into my shelter. What are their sizes? Could you email me the pics? [email protected]

We have very limited space for large dogs but I'm almost positive I can get them in if they are not too big.

You can tell your friend that my shelter is a VERY nice no-kill shelter. I've never seen happier shelter dogs. They have indoor pens and outdoor pens where they go play 4 times a day. They even have little kiddie pools in their outdoor pens. We have a nice LARGE fenced in yard where we run and walk the dogs. We also have an extensive screening process to be sure the dogs are placed in the best homes.

I'm sure she really would go in a second!! And I'd take it as my personal responsibility to take care of her (or them) for the duration of time they are at the shelter. I'm very good at spoiling doggies :D

More info on Sapper would be good, I'll email a friend of mine (truck driver) who is currently dogless, about both dogs. She moved, and I don't know if she'd have time/room for both - any idea how they would do around an elderly miniature poodle? (That's her mom-in-law's, who didn't hang out much with my friend's dogs, anyway.)

Thanks all. I got an email from Kathie. They are having problems sending attachments but she said she will get it to me shortly.

Man I love this place! She felt much better knowing that people are interested. I'll post again as soon as she gets the pictures to me.

Take care,
Adrian

My brother (Army, stationed at Ft. Drum, upstate NY), also would like more info - what kind/size is Sapper? And how big is Yoda? He's asking around up there ...

Update:

I got a call from Kathie last night. Sapper was adopted and Yoda will be coming to the states to stay with our friend Lauren until Kathie's tour of duty is over in 3 months. At that point, Yoda is going to live with her.

She sends greeting and thanks from Uzbekistan (her latest assignment) and said she appreciates everyone here who made the effort to help. With both dogs finding homes, she has one less thing to worry about so thanks again for the offers to help.

I am glad that the dogs have found homes. But I would like to know what Vet in his right mind would turn a dog loose in the desert to fend for itself. I would like to know the vets name so that if by chance he came to the states and settled in my area I sure wouldn't want to use him. I don't want to see any dog euthanized but before I turn him loose to fend for himself I think it would be more humane to euthanize. I dont want to offend anyone but I think that vet was off his rocker to consider turning the dogs loose in the desert.
