Micah was such a brave boy at the vet today! I was so proud of him. :)

I lured him into the port-o-prison with chicken and pasta from last nights dinner. He was great in the car, just a few chatters from him.

He was really scared once in the room. It took the vet tech and I about five minutes to catch him to get his wieght. We finally got him up there and he weighs almost 6 lbs.

He had a eye test where they put the color in his eyes, he has a little scar on his cornea on his right eye and has conjuctivitus. So, he got some eye cream.

When she took him temperature, he cried and she noticed his little bottom was real red. :( So she told me to feed him Science Diet I/D.

She said he was underwieght and seemed under nourished. I told her all about the special cat milk (which, btw, I got the full fat version of today) and she said it was a good idea. She couldn't believe he was 3 1/2 years old....poor thing... :(

He's making progress socially too. When I open the door and sit down, he comes to me. :D

I'm so glad that Micah's vet visit went well and that he doesn't have anything seriously wrong with him. :) I'm sure the new food will help him feel better too. Once again let me say how happy I am that you are able to give him a forever happy and loving home. :D

Micah what a lucky boy you are. You will be much better in a short time. Your bum will feel better, you will have put on a little weight and you will enjoy all the love your purrrents give you.
And your sad first years will be forgotten.:) :) :)

To hear about a breeder like this really makes me

6 pounds is so little (with the exception of little Kim, all mine are aound 11 - 12 pounds). It is too bad that he was possibly undernourished, but I am sure he will make a grand recovery now, in his new home. Good luck with the conjunctivitis.

Kelly and friends,

Really guys, not to say that Kelly's new kitty is fat or skinny, Abys are traditionally not heavy cats. Miley weighs 6 lbs. and Grammy weighed 7. They are lean cats by breed. Please be aware of that Kelly. Not all Vets are familiar with the Aby breed. I know mine was not. I am surely not saying the vet was wrong! Don't get me wrong. But these cats are not healthy when they get fat..... 11 lbs would be way, way too much. My guess would be that 8 lbs would be a bit much or just right, depending on the bone size. I don't think heavy is healthy for any cat..... and believe me I have had my share of fat cats! I vowed never to allow it again. We shall see.......Ti seems to be eating for 3, so I may have to eat my words.

So Kelly, congratulations on your new kitty and I just know you will be fine with him. Please read up on the breed and do a little research on the internet, as I think it will help you in the long run. You may even want to talk to an Aby breeder - they would be really happy to share their information with you! There are many many tricks to keeping them healthy and happy. I tried, but didn't have much luck with Graemer. But I really tried!

Keep those photos coming - and please don't be angry that I have been so bossy about this kitty. Abys are a special breed and have special personalities for the most part. They sometimes have special needs.

Fondly,

Sallyanne

I have to agree with Sas about Abbys - she knows better, but seeing the hungry look in his eyes :( made me think he's undernourished. Don't try to get him at Noah's weight he-he-he :)
But after having received good treatment from you and better food, I am sure, he will look much better - Like he is not handsome enough, macho man.

Gee, sounds like poor Micah has had a lot to deal with in his little live. Prayers from all of us here that he is soon a happy healthy kitty!

Just to add to what Sallyanne said regarding weight, it is really easy to generalise about the "ideal" weight for a cat.

My family in South Africa think that Ally is a real "skinny-malinky long legs", but she is actually OVERWEIGHT for her breed.

She is a Bahraini Dilmun - the recommended weight is between 5.5 and 6.5 lb - Ally weighs in at a whopping 10.5lb!

To most people that sounds OK, but my vet is a Bahraini, and knows the breed very well, so he is well-positiones to give good advice.

Good luck, and hope Micah feels better soon!

Ally sends him a big "feel better" HUG

I'd like to agree to Sallyanne. Filou is 7,5 lb and most Abys I see on shows are smaller. Many friends here prefer Tigris who due to his Siberian mom is much bigger and more a hunk of a cat. Abys compared to that are fairy princes and that is part of their charm. So I also agree, a pound or 2 will certainly be ok for Micah but it is likely that he is not thought much bigger.

I agree also that Abys are special and they love you so fondly that you will always want to be loved by an Aby.

However as she said: if you have a cat that is a big eater and just doesn't stop it -it may be more or less impossible to keep her healthy. Some cats who did not have enough food when they were kittens just can't get enough.

Sorry -as you are now a member of the growing Aby moms club there are a lot of godmothers:) :)

Sounds like Micah was a very good kittie at the vet! Last time I took Panther, he did not like the intern that worked there and tore that poor kids arms up! I'm sure Micah will get better and be very happy now that he has someone who loves him.:D

Here's to many happy years at your new home Micah!!!:)

Thanks so much, everyone!! I really appreciate all the kind words and advice. I'm off to do some more Aby research in a second. :)

Yea, I knew this breed was very small, somewhat similiar to the Russian Blues, right? He really LOOKS undernourished. :( The vet was amazed that he was 3 1/2. When she was feeling his body, she kept saying he seemed undernourished.

The vet recommened that I free feed his dry I/D and then give him the wet a couple times a day. When I woke up, I got him about 1/3 of the can and he WOLFED it down...poor, poor little guy. I hope that with time, he'll understand that food is always there for him. I've been free feeding him the Royal Canin prior to this, and he ate as he wanted but really ate the chicken and cat milk VERY fast.

Anyway, some good news! He slept with me last night!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D (If I could fill up this whole page with happiness, I would!!)

He knows what you did for him. He will be eternally gratefull and stick to you like velcro. Sometimes there are very special cats with whom you form an inexplicable bond. This happened to me with a cat I looked after for a friend for two months one summer. I had to give Kashmir (she was a siamese a.k.a. velcro kitty) back. We were both traumatized by the seperation and it took months for us to get over this. I would visit my friend who lived in another city mainly to spend time with her cat. You two have many happy years. Hope he gets along well with the other cats and they are accepting of him. Are they showing any interest as to who is behind the door ?

They kind of know he's there, but only cause they see me bringing food in there and cat litter out. :) Basie will usually sit at the door while I'm in there and will utter a few cries.

Haven't done any introductions yet, I want him to feel happy and at home first. :)

How cute!! I'm glad that he's getting all settled in and Basie seems interested in "the kitty behind the curtain"! LOL I think Micah and Basie will get along great and will be great friends! How cute! Do let us know when you start the introductions, and be sure to have Basie go first!;)

I haven't been on the boards for awhile so I missed all the excitement concerning Micah! Congrats Kelly! Look at that, I go away for awhile and you get yourself 2 kitties. I better not go away again or you'll have to move to a bigger household!

:D

When Nakita was at the vets the last time he was concerned about her weight and was going to order all these blood tests. He's never seen a Russian Blue before so I called my breeder and asked what her weight should be. That's when she told me that Nakita was the correct weight and will probably be 6 pounds or less full grown since her mom is just a little over 5 pounds. Just a small breed.

Since I'm so behind on posts, how is Oliver making out? The last I read you were worried about him adjusting in being in a multi-cat household.
