Has anyone had any experience with leather furniture and pets? I am thinking of going with leather because of dog hair. I thought I read somewhere that the claws can mar it, though. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Well, we have cats, no dog, but we have leather furniture. We bought it 12 years ago, as we were told it was "childproof".

Well, after raising two kids, and 3 cats, we can honestly answer: leather is CHILDPROOF, but not CATPROOF:eek:

My parents have a leather couch that Shiloh has scratched on accident by jumping just because that leather is so sensitive. I have a lazy boy that is vinyl though and it has held up with the dogs and cat. It looks just as good as leather in my opinion.

My mother in law has 2 dogs and a cat, and intact leather furniture. We have cloth furniture, and there is always hair on it. I guess it's just a personal preference, I've heard arguments for either way, same for interiors of cars.

we have leather furniture and a dog, when we had our old dog a huge yellow lab it did scratch up the leather. But now we have a smaller yorkie puppy and he doesn't seem to bother with it (I think it's because he's so small). So I think if you have a small dog there would be less "damage".

P.S. we have two cats and the also enjoy using the arm of the couch as a scratch pad!

~Good luck :)

I think vinyl is the best way to go :) It looks almost exactly like leather, and is better to have with dogs, and it's alot cheaper! :p

I think it depends on the coluor of the leather and the type of leather. I have a Sheltie and ever since we got him his been jumping on the cauch and there isn't any scrotches on it.

 I had leather furniture. The keyword is had. I have 2 siberian huskies and they love to chew leather. Anything, so needless to say i have had to throw my leather couch, chair and ottoman out and get regular furniture. NOt good Idea for pets I think.
