View Full Version : Mystery is sick...

Mystery spiked a temp on me last night. I am waiting for my vets office to open so I can get him in.
His only symptoms are the temp, lethargy and he is shaky and can not seem to support himself to stay up on his own for long. He ate and drank a little bit last night and passed his 'water' this morning. He is getting dehydrated and is refusing water this morning.
No other symptoms...Myst is and indoor cat and I have torn the house apart looking to see if he got into something. So far nada...I am a wreck and Karissa is in tears. Mystery is her 'baby'.
Karissa helped me nurse Mystery back to health. He was dropped by coyotes in our yard...he wasn't even 6 weeks old and the vet says it was a miracle he made it.
Any ideas? There is no respirtory distress and he doesn't want to be moved, but he tolerated me putting him in his bed so I can transport him. His abdomen doesn't seem to have any swelling and his gums looked normal.
I got about 120 beats in 30 seconds. Had a hard time taking his pulse as Indy and Asia got out and they wanted to lay with him.
Thanks for letting me vent my anxiety...I have a little over 10 minutes to go before the office phone is back on...this is the longest morning of my life. :(

Oh dear. I just wanted you to know that I will be praying that the vet can quickly figure out what is wrong with Mystery. :( It is so hard to see them sick and they can't tell you what is wrong!!
Please let us know what you find out.

I'm back...it seems Mystery has a mystery illness.
His temp was still 105 when we got to the vets. They gave him 2 subQ shots to help with the dehydration. They had to give him an enema as I had not seen him use his box to poop in at least 36 hours. He did use the box twice since the enema. So that was good.
They took blood for tests at the clinic, but his pressure was down and they couldn't get enough blood to send out for testing. His gums are ok...no swelling, no vomiting and no discharge or respirtory distress of any type.
I have to monitor his temp and pulse etc, as well as give him anti-biotics twice a day for the next 10 days.
So we are in a holding pattern...I hate the wait and see approach...but that is all we can do for now.
Thank you so much for the postive thoughts and prayers on behalf of our boy. I'll keep you all posted.

It sounds like an infection so the antibiotics would make sense. We hope strongly that it's like this and send our best thought to Mystery and you:)

So sorry to hear about your kitty. Did they do a chest x-ray?
Just curious, cause a chest x-ray would rule in/out so much. I learned the hard way.
Keep us posted.
Prayers coming your way.

I hope that the antibiotics help Mystic. If the vet can't take a blood sample, maybe they can do a urine sample right now. That will at least help rule out something like diabetes.
Our fingers and paws are crossed for you and hoping that Mystic gets better soon.

It does sound like Mystery has a pretty nasty systemic infection. But you're vet's covering all the bases and now the antibiotics need to do their work. Hopefully she/he can get a blood sample next visit. Poor Mystery. We hope you feel better very soon. That enema could not have been much fun:( Love and prayers are coming your way, sweetheart.

Hi and thanks all...we didn't do a chest x-ray on Mystery as he is having no problems at all with his breathing. But it is something we will do if he doesn't improve.
The vet did do some blood tests...but we couldn't get enough blood due to his dehydration and his pressure being down to get a second vial to send out to the lab. If he doesn't come around we will take him back and try for another blood draw to send to the lab. (I am waiting for the call about his results from todays tests from them now.)
Waiting is the hardest part. And we had to isolate him from the other cats. So he is a bit lonely. He is a very social boy...but I am glad to see him respond to me. He was not responding well last night...so this is good.
I just got him to sit up and eat and drink...another good sign and he used his litter box again. So we seem to be making some progress. I am going to check his temp in another 2 hours to see where he is at...plus he needs his second dose of meds.

Mystery is doing better this morning!
He was sitting up when I went to check on him and he was 'talking' to me. I opened the door of the crate and he walked out on his own. First time he has walked since Sunday when he spiked the temp.
I gave him his morning dose of meds...after he had crawled under the comforter on my daughter 's bed...another good sign as that is his favorite spot to sleep.
So at this point things are looking up for Mystery and I don't think we are going to have to take him into the city animal hosptial for IV fluids. *Whew*
Mystery is going to be 4 in June.
I forgot to add...
Thank you all so much for your prayers for Mystery!
The phone rang while I was typing this up...a friend checking on how Mystery is doing.
I really appreciate all the prayers and positive thought and well wishes on his behalf...I am a firm believer in the power of prayer. :)

Thank you all!
Good news today! Mystery ran to greet me when I opened the door to my daughter's room to bring him his morning meds and his breakfast.
I just let him out to roam the house and the first thing he did was go get a drink from the 'pond' in the cellar.
(I have been wintering over my pond plants in a plastic childs pool and have kept the pump and filter running. The cats love the moving water and all of them have been drinking the 'pond' water all winter. I am going to have to get them a water fountain because it is almost time to move the plants back out to my pond!)
The only problem I see now is that the Amoxicilian has given him very loose stools. Luckily I have Benebac gel on hand because of Asia needing it after her worming. That and he loves plain yogurt so I will have to pick up a container of it for him and add it to his food for awhile.
Mystery is still a bit 'quiet' compared to his normal self. But he is getting around with a much steadier gait this morning. And he is quite happy to be back with the rest of the household. His temp went back up a bit last night. But it is back down this morning.
Thank you all for your continued prayers and support. I'll have to post some pics of him later today.
Barbara

Good to hear:)
And I think you cannot expect him to be 100% ok -if a human has to take antibiotics they are also not their normal self.
We wish Mystery a continuing recovery:)

Hi Krazyaboutkatz,
The first time I saw your signature I thought the same...Mystery looks like Storm!
Thanks everyone...He is a beautiful boy. He had a good day today. I had to buy him some plain yogurt for his tummy. The anti-biotics are doing on a number on his tummy. But he was getting around quite well and behaving more like himself. He still goes to rest alot. But after the fever he had I am not surprised.
