Hi guys...I know that I am new here and a lot of you don't know me...yet! ;)
But I got one of those calls today! And I have got to vent...
I just let my last foster go yesterday. Ellie has been with me 2+ years while her owner got his life together...she and he just headed to Texas to join his fiancee and their other dog and start their new life together.
Only a couple of my GSD rescue friends knew that I was going to have room for another foster soon.
Well, this morning I get home to a message on my machine from a woman I helped out a couple years ago with a sweet yellow Lab.
Well seems she needs to rehome her pup. Her son is very sick with respirtory problems and severe allergies. (I know this is true as I had him on my van when he was a pre-schooler.) Back when I first made contact with her it was because the hubby was threatening to get rid of (read 'shoot') the dog because she was jumping the fence that he didn't want to fix. We got throught that and things have been going well.
She was determined to keep the pup inspite of her sons allergies and asthma.
Well as she is explaining to me today that she can't keep the pup anymore due to her son getting sick and needing meds weekly that is $20 bucks a 'script she broke down on the phone.
I guess she just hasn't run into too much compassion lately. Come to find out her hubby left her for another women and has decided that he isn't going to pay for his kids meds anymore and that he isn't going to pay child support anymore.
Soooo, I not only spent time talking to her about rescue and making an alternative plan for her dog, I ended up telling her about a school breakfast and lunch program that our town has.
I also find out that she was on disability, but it was terminated 'cause the hubby made too much...so I told her to contact the SSI office to get her case opened again...
Oh and the pup isn't spayed because the soon-to-be ex wouldn't let her spay her! Of course the pup doesn't have papers! So she is worried that a rescue won't take the pup....
(She is UTD on her shots thankfully!)
She is also upset as her son broke down crying this morning because his dad shows up and takes all of the kids stuff. Bike, go-cart and 4 wheeler...then tells the kid. I bought the stuff it is mine.
Eeeyuck! Ya know I hate calls like this. I got off the phone and was furious....I can't stand guys who walk away from all of their responsibilities!
And it really is the pits when a 'simple' rescue call turns into a
therapy and counseling call. :P Thanks for letting me vent.!
