View Full Version : A Dog Rescue in Progress

So let me tell you about my day...I got up this morning...oh wait I'll skip ahead...
( I'm gonna parahrase to keep a long story from being even longer...)
The phone rings at 10am this morning and it is PT's own Mugsy. "Where's Marietta, Ohio" she wants to know. " I think around Columbus", I reply. Why? Well, there is a Dalmation down there that is going to be PTS if no one takes him by 4pm today, and I know you want a spotty dog and...send me the email I say...
Hello, my name is Jessica and I've currently been working at our local
shelter for 1 year. We have a Dalmatian at our shelter that I'm really tying
to find someone or rescue to take. The reason for this is because we are a
kill shelter and it is very hard to adopt that specific breed out. His name
is Spot. He knows basic commands such as sit, shake, lay, heal and roll
over. He is already neutered and up to date on this years shots. I've never
really been attached to a Dalmatian before, but theirs just something about
this one. He was brought into our shelter as an owner surrender. I wasn't
attached to him at first, but then he grew on me. He has this way of making
me pet him before another dog. I didn't realize how attached I was until his
time came to be put down. I went back knowing he was going to be put down
and held his hand and started crying. I looked into his eyes and It was like
he knew what was going on. See I'm one of the holders for EU. I don't like
to do it, but I just think they are going to a better place. But I couldn't
do it for him. I know their is a good family out their for him. My boss
walked by and hugged me and told me I could go ahead and feed him. I was so
excited I started crying even more. I've never been that way towards a dog
and she knows it. I think that's why she let me have a second chance on
finding him a home. The biggest problem is people don't even look at our
Dalmatians. They think they are all aggressive. That's why I'm writing you
in hope that you guys might be able to help me, or know of someone that can.
I want to get him out of their, but I don't know of anyone that can take
him. I live in an apartment with my aunt and can only have 1 dog. Which I
already have. I don't mean to seem so sappy, but I don't know what else to
do. If you cannot help me I will understand. You cannot save all the
dogs/cats. It will just make me feel better knowing I tried every possible
way to find him a home if we do end up putting him down. If you can help
please email me back ASAP or you can call our shelter tom. between 10:00 and
4:00. Thank you for your time. And again I don't mean to seem to sappy. I've
attached his picture below.
Thank you
Humane Society of the Ohio Valley
So we chat awhile and hang up.
She calls back about around 11am. Did you see his picture? Yeah. Shouldn't have looked. Me either. What are we going do? Don't know....says he doesn't like kids. You don't have kids, she says. I know, but I have nephews and we want kids before too long. Okay...well we'll contact some ppl see what happens.
It's noon. Molly calls agin. She has talked to Jessica...Spot does like kids, he is trained, get along well wth other dogs, etc, etc, etc. Now I'm late for dance. I'll think I tell her, and call you later.
2pm...we finally get a break at dance. I talke to Ralph. ASlong as you are okay with getting him into a no-kill slhleter if our girls don't get along with him, Let's get him he says. Yeah I say! So, I make arrangemts and I'm going to head tonight. I come home get the girls, get on the highway and BAM! There goes the front tire! AAAHHHH!!! OKay, it is now 4 pm, but I have talked to Jessica earier and she saysif I can't make it today them keep him throught the weekend. So I call my parents (who were going with me) ASk them to call the Shelter, and get Jessica's phone # for me. I have a call into her to make arrangements to go get Spot tomorrow. Yeah!!! A Spotty Dog is saved!!!
Please keep us in your thoughts as we make this 4 hr (each way) drive tommorrow (NO MORE FLATS!!!) and that he will be a good match for my girls!!!
Thanks!
Amy

I will say that it's been a long eventful day in Toledo, Marietta, and Fort Wayne. I talked to Jessica about as many times as I did Amy (probably more) and we got a back up plan in case Amy didn't take him and found that the Cobb Humane Society in New Haven, IN would take him if I went and got him (which I volunteered to do) and then BAM! Amy and Ralph come through! Yeah for you Amy and Ralph!! I hope the tire holds out tomorrow and one of call the other when we get home. Mike and I are doing a transport tomorrow for Blaze the mini GSD and are taking her to her forever home in Kalamazoo, MI.

This is more than a dog rescue in progress, this is a possible adoption in progress. Whahooo! Jessica's story is heart wrenching. What a heroine she is. And this pupster is beautiful. To me he looks like a combo between a Dalmation and a Black Lab. As for a name, I think LUCKY would be appropriate.

Oh my gosh, it did work. We are home from the rescue to Marietta and Amy should be back in Toledo any time. Spot is a great dog but I will let Amy tell you more about it. She and Christy will both be shocked that I have actually registered here. I couldn't think of a good name and I am not sure this is the one I will stick with - however, that is another subject and I guess you would rather hear about the trip. Amy got here about 9:00 am and we back our long trek of 460 miles round trip (560) for Amy. It was 2:30 by the time we got there - a few extra stops for lunch etc. It was 6:30 when we got back to Findlay. I will let Amy tell the rest of the story but we did bring the dog home with us. Spot, Sadie, and Cincy all were great car riders. However, our 4 dogs were glad when we returned so they could go out. I am sure you have all seen my pups, Oreo, Dazzi, Tagger and Snoopy in both Amy and Christy's threads.

Oh yeah!! I feel like I have a stake in this one too, so I'm more excited than words can say. I have had a great day, albeit it tiring, 2 successes in one day!!! Blaze is such a sweetheart. I was expecting lots worse. She was a little tentative when we first got her, but she LOVED Shawna and they played for awhile. When we got to Kalamazoo, her new mom just fell head over heels immediately and I felt very comfortable handing her over. She's only about 1-2 years old and has been about bred to death, so she deserves the spoiling she got yesterday and today ( a hamburger, dinner at a doggy restaurant, a breakfast sandwich, shortbread cookies from the Girl Scouts and LOTS of hugs and kisses). And of course the second success is Amy and Ralph and their new baby....I'm about ready to crawl out of my skin here!!
4 Dog Mother
03-16-2003, 07:29 PM
I see Amy has not posted yet. I guess she needs to get all the babies settled. And let Spot meet his new daddy. I don't think Amy is going to leave his name Spot even though he seems to have been named that since he was a pup - a family with a little girl gave him up because they were moving. She left a very cute little letter for the new owners of Spot. She was very upset with having to give him up. She said he was 2 1/2 years old. He was very quiet and the meeting of with his new siblings was so much quieter than anything that would have happened with my crew. They all just seemed to accept each other and that was that!
One of Spot's eyes in encased in a black patch - the other has a black circle around it. So we think it should be named Bandit or Rascal. We went through so many names Satchmo, Zeke, Petey, Boomer, Bosco, Roscoe, Bruiser - I have no idea what they will settle on. When we got him back here, I took my dogs out one by one to meet him. He did well with meeting every one of them - even Dazzi who is our usual questionable one. She doesn't accept everybody at first sight. He seemed to accept Snoopy's and Taggert's enthusiastic welcomes very calmly. I just want to know how Amy ends up with the quiet ones and I have all the noisy ones. It doesn't quite seem fair. Especially since Snoopy should have been hers. - But again that is another story.

That all sounds so Wonderful....sounds like hes' house ready and all...2 1/2..hope he accepts a new name....So Glad that Cincy and Sadie were in Agreement!!!!!!!!!!

I talked to Amy about 1/2 an hour ago and she told me to post and tell you all that things are great, but she hung up when they were starting to play and there was a little bit of growling going on, but like Mike said, that's probably just nerves. She loves him and said that he's very quiet, just like Mom said! He does have worms, but has had the first treatment already and should be good to go very soon. 560 miles round trip! WOW! That's dedication. She said that the vet that he went to was going to fax her his records tomorrow and he is in West Virginia. She said that you could see the bridge to WV from the shelter. She was going to eat dinner and settle the dogs down, but told me to post and let you guys know that all is well!! Yeah for us!
Mom, you are an angel too for going along for the ride and helping out. I'm so glad that you joined us!! Welcome aboard.

I'm finally here and posting!! Sorry to keep everyone waiting, but as you have heard it wasa LONG trip and worth every mile! Things are going well so far. We finally got some play about the time Molly and called dinner was ready so it got a bit hectic for a few mintues. Cincy was doing alittle growling, but Sadie and Spot seemd to jump right into the playing. They have been tearing around here off and on since (and Cincy has now joined in more calmly)
I think we are going to change his name, and I am sorta leaning toward Satchmo or Bandit (but I love some of the other suggestions esp. Domino and Nati)
He seems to be a very sweet and well trained dog. he is doing well with coming and was showing off his tricks of shake, rollover and sit pretty. He also have given 3 kisses already (although I have yet to get one :( )
Thnaks for everyone's support and well wishes! We keep you updated and try and gt some pictures soon!

This is Amy's mom. We are up here today so Amy's dad can work on her car. The weather this afternoon is beautiful - must be at least 60 maybe 65. Amy said the first night went well but I am sure she will tell more about that later. She is kenneling the new dog while they are at work until all adjustments are made. I hate to tell Amy but she still does not have a watchdog. We entered the house and no one barked at all. Which is such a change from our nosy hounds that it isn't even funny! We let Sadie and Cincy out but we were all dressed up because we had just come from a funeral so we changed our clothes before we let Spot out of his kennel. He was so happy to see us but no barking at all. Just thanks for letting me out. :) The dogs have been out all afternoon while Carl worked on the car. I sat out and watched them so they wouldn't get into what he was doing and to see how they got along. (Right, it had nothing to do with spring fever at all - just a good grandma's duty) They are doing great. He is just a natural with these pups. He and Sadie have played more than he and Cincy but since they both have Dal in them that is no surprise. They haven't done a lot of running but since Amy has mostly shade in her backyard and it is still an ice skating rink that is no surprise.
From the back and side he resembles our Snoopy so much it is amazing. He is just a little taller - he is shorter than Sadie and taller than Cincy as far as the dogs at this house. Right now they are all in the house with me while Carl finishes up his work and are all staring out the front window - I have yet to hear this dog bark - Cincy and Sadie don't bark much- it really doesn't seem fair that an old geezer like me has the young active, noisy dogs and Amy and Ralph, the kids, have quiet, calm pups. :(
I am sure Amy will be on later to tell you more. The only thing I can add is that I am very grateful to Jessica at the Marietta Animal Shelter and Molly ( Mugsy) for alerting Amy about this dog. It would have been so wrong for this wonderful dog to have been put down. And I am very proud of Amy for taking the time and energy to go save this beautiful dog. (Yes, Christy I am proud of you too for adopting Sierra from a animal shelter too).

Just wanted to welcome 4 Dog Mother on behalf of the other *old geezers* here. You'll fit in quite well with the rest of us. The reason you have the young active dogs is to keep those old bones and muscles moving because once they stop, they can get kind of sluggish. :p Like your dogs, this board can move quite fast and I think I have missed seeing your dogs. I'm going to search to see what I can find. Also thanks for filling us in on what's going on with Spot and the rest of the crew. We just love the updates.

Well, I am home finally home and with my pups :)
Things went well last night. Spot did a little barking when we first put him inthe crate for bed last night, but quited down pretty quickly. No accidents, no more barking, it was a goodnight!
Things are good today too. A little bit of dominance to work out between Sadie and Cincy, but nothing too terrible. I stopped at the vet tonight to get Worm Meds for Sadie and Cincy as a preventative.
Ralph just got home, so I'm going to chat with hima bit and I'll update more later!!

Well, well, well ........... spotty lover!!! Sorry it took me so long to post, but as you are all aware, I live in Australia, and your exiting things happen when I am sleeping (AND I had to travel for work!!!). Thanks Delidog for pm'ing me, otherwise I would only have managed to see this tonight!
You HAD to get a full spot eventually Amy! Unfortunately, I could not see the picture you posted - seems to have disappeared :(
Congrats on saving what is obviously a loving, beautiful spotty boy. Amy's Mum - you are amazing too - driving so far to get the beloved boy.
Molly - what can I say ......... you are phenominal. As always, looking after the precious monsters that we all love - pups!
What a happy ending. I have tears in my eyes .......

We are leaning toward keeping it Spot. If not it will probably be Satchmo
Are you going to take him to the meeting you guys are having at the dog park at the end of this month?
I'm really hoping to, but only if the vet says he is worm free by then!
mugsy
03-17-2003, 09:03 PM
Geez, I would think he would be worm free by then, when I got Sox as a pup, she was so full of worms she was round with them and it only took her about 3 days to get rid of them.
I think Spot is good for him since he knows it so well, but I do like Satchmo!! lol

Spot is a beauty (what love and gratitude in those eyes) and so, so lucky to have landed in the most loving home imaginable. Cincy, Sadie and Spot...Has a nice ring to it!!:)

I thought he would be (but I've been lucky enough to never have a dog with worms before)...anyway, I just picked up a pile and I didn't see any, so I think we are getting near the end! :)

We spent 2 hours in the yard raking last night and we didn't even get 1/2 done and it's supposed to rain this afternoon...I'm praying it holds off until 7 so that we can get a little more done today.
How's Spot today??? I showed my school roomie his picture and she was AAAWWWW!!! Who wouldn't want him?? Her assistant said the same thing. You definitely got a winner in the eyes of Shawnee Middle School!!

So far so good! I just got home and let them out and Spot and Sadie were running arounf the backyard. Noe they are all in here eating.
Still a few worms here and there. I got Spot's vet records today...is UTD on stuff, but has NEVEr had a heartworm test or any preventative. That scares me a little, but we have an appointment with our vet tomorrow, so we will see where things stand. Keep your fingers crossed!
Spot finally gave me a kiss last night! He gives Ralph lot more, but I'm sure in a few days he'll be handing them out freely :)

Wow, I almost didn't see this one. I am so happy that we went to get Spot - what a great granddog he has turned out to be. And not only that what a great dog he is period. Just makes you stop and think about all the great dogs that don't get a "second" chance and sometimes only because of the genes that carry. "Dalmations, pitbulll, rottweilers are too aggressive and often are teh first to be put down when the shelter is too full". Wouldn't that have been a sad think in Spot's case. We were told he wasn't good with kids - he was owned by a little girl who left a note for whoever adopted him. Where that information came from - who knows? No he is a therapy dog in great demand at the library as the kids love to read to the spotted dog.
Happy Gotcha Day, Spot and thanks Amy and Ralph!

At first I didn't realize this was an old thread either, and I thought that your not liking the name Spot was kind of strange since you had a dog named Spot. Heehee - guess you didn't change it.
Anyway, after I realized this was a update for your original story of acquiring Spot, it did my heart good to realize what a happy *tail* this has been. LES here. Have you ever called the angel Jessica to let her know she done good?
Another anniversary in that 4 Dog Mother joined the PT group with this adventure.

I never called her, but I did email the shelter a few times with updates. I don't know if Jessica is still there or not, but they do have Spot in there "Happy Endings" photos located here (http://www.hsov.org/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=3)
