View Full Version : bettas housing very important.. :)

When housing a betta you must have a heater and proper habbitat formations in its tank.
You should never house a betta with another male betta, bettas are very aggresive toward other males of the same species.
You can house bettas with other tropical fish such as fresh water angel fish and balla sharks.
When choosing the best home for your betta dont result to a meesly bowl or jar. Even though some sites say it is ok and bettas like it. They are wrong. A batta is much happier in a bigger habitat.
Bettas are very beautiful when they flare up and show off there mighty fins and gills. If you place a mirror in the tank your betta will flare up in a flase of color.
Here is a tank you should use you your betta..
http://www.petfish.net/pics/mirror.jpg
2-10 gallons> the bigger the tank the more happy your betta will be and the more often itll show off.
Here is a tank you shouldent use..
http://robertsflorist.com/pic/fish/betta2a_small.jpg
http://www.blumen.com/bettas2240p.jpg
the habitat above may be appeling to the eyes but it isnt the best home for your betta because of bacteria and lack of oxygen.
Bettas are a kind of fish that dont need much oxygen but I think that a filter is better suited to a happy betta.. :)
How to choose a healthy betta...
Look for bright colors and no forming fungus. Look for a betta that is swimming wildly and not just sitting at the bottom of the tank.
Happy bettas look like this:

A sad betta looks like this:

make yours a happy betta :D

Good lecture, where did you copy paste that from??
My bettas are healthy and happy in their containers. I am not taking advice from a 16 year old with your history. Sorry.

LMAO @ shais_mom's post tooo funny. :D
While I'm glad yours are happy... my betta is in a 20 gallon (i have never ever let mine stay in those container from the store) and he is a SUPER happy betta.. in fact all of mine that i've had have been happier in the bigger tanks.
I personally would never keep them in such a small container like what you get in a store, or the lily vases, just because I've seen how much mine adores swimming all around the tank he is in.
At the very least I would say is ANYTHING is better than those teeny cup size containers that you get them in at the petstores. But my betta would say "my tank is perfect with all it's room to roam and places to play hide and seek" :D

Well I dont care if you dont beleive me. it is your own fault. I know I did'nt copy it and why would I? for attention, HA. That would be funny. I wrote this post so ppl who have bettas can house them in aquariums not meesly small cramped jars. It is just commen sence.. From my past bettas I have learned that they are much happier in big tanks rather then small jars and bowls.

OMG never ever did i think that i would see a post on PT, of all places, where ppl laugh and make fun of someone else! i dont care if u think its funny, these kinds of things are hurtful....u should all be ashamed...tikeyas_mom was only trying to help and display information on a PET site where she was giving PET advice....so y does everyone have to critisize her for trying to be nice? i see the happy faces in her post, she is not accusing anyone of being neglegent towards their beta...and even if she did copy and paste it, who cares? im sure she wouldnt have been the first one here to do that...YES, lets laugh at everyone who copies things even when they r trying to help....this makes me sad...:(

Ok, first of all...
Did you guys ever consider that Shais_mom might've wanted the link to check out more information from the author? Possibly even to write the author with her thoughts?
Second of all, the author (whomever it may be) has not done his/her research. Bettas come from the muddy, shallow rice patties in Asia. No, that is not ideal for our pets but this is where and how they became the hardy fish we have today. Bettas breath from the surface of the water which is different from most other fish. Taking in oxygen from the surface allows them to survive in those small petstore cups (which I do not approve of by the way).
Do you need proof? Here check out the International Betta Congress (IBC) (http://www.ibc-smp.org/) it's one of the best info sites out there.
I have to say I agree and disagree with your pictures.
I agree in that I, personally, would never use a "vase/plant" set up. My reason is two-fold: 1. The fish can become trapped in the roots; 2. While beautiful, this set up requires more care/cleaning than a tank set up.
I agree you should not use something like the first vase/plant picture. Why? Again, bettas are surface breathers - in this set-up, the water is all the way to the top of the bowl -- no room for the fish to breathe.
I do like the second vase/plant pic tho. Plenty of surface area for the fish to breathe.
I very much disagree with the pic of your 'happy' betta. He is in fighting/breeding stance. The second pic shows a relaxed (though possibly ill -- hard to tell due to the poor quality of the picture) betta.
from wolfsoul: OMG never ever did i think that i would see a post on PT, of all places, where ppl laugh and make fun of someone else!
Wolfsoul, you don't make it to the General section very often do you?
u should all be ashamed...tikeyas_mom was only trying to help and display information on a PET site where she was giving PET advice
Point taken. But if giving advice, it should be more substantial than "this is a picture of a happy betta -- this is a picture of an unhappy betta." How do you know he's unhappy? Did he ask you for prozac?
I'm not picking on tikeya's mom, her intentions were well. However I do find 'holes' in her advice. Learn some more about the fish, their physiology, and natural habitat *then* start giving advice.

Ps. I never said its ok for her to give wrong info on the bettas. Just said not to make fun of someone relatively new.

I didn't think I WAS making fun of her, I was just telling her that I do not agree with her advice, especially since Tonya has set us all straight.
It is a personal preference on how we keep our fish. And I happen to prefer mine this way.

Agree with Tonya, don't check the general section did you. And come to think of it weren't you a MAJOR contributer to Tikeya's mom's "what dog should I get thread?" There were alot more hurtful comments in there, and tempers were running alot higher there then here.

I didnt post a site because I new the info.. Even check google.ca.. I never pasted or copied any of it.. Get over it. I am just happy that the bettas I get will be happy and I am sad that yours wont..Would you rather live in a small cramped jar or bowl or in a tanks where you can actully swim around. ??? That is my question. And ya know what, if you check any web site it'll say that betta jars and bowls are ok for a TEMP home.. But they much perfer tanks.
tikeyas_mom
03-08-2003, 04:36 PM
The smaller individual jar.
Third best, but small cups are not included. Would YOU like to live in a closet? I think not. So why should your betta be any different! For heaven sake, spend $5 and get him a decent size jar!! OK. If you have a bunch of bettas, and not a whole lot of space, you might need to make those jars smaller. I do not recommend anything less than 1/2 gallon. 1/4 can be used but only as a temporary housing (say you just jarred a bunch of young juvenile males and are taking them to the pet store in 3 weeks or something) (by the way pet stores are often TERRIBLE with their pets, so I never take my bettas to a store, ever.) Get the idea? With 1/4 jars you need to do a full water change every third day, if you don't want those bettas to get tail rot, and other bacterial diseases. With a 1/2 gal jar, a weekly water change should suffice, although twice a week is still best. I keep all my jars bare, because it is cleaner and easier to make the water changes. Remember I have hundreds of them. If you can add a live plant, do. Of course the smaller jars mean more pollution so beware to not overfeed!! Uneaten food rots promptly and turns into betta disease pronto. Also, remember that water change remain stressful for the bettas so avoid doing them daily, because you will probably weaken your betta's immune system that way. A good balance between too much handling and not enough water changed must be achieved. Again REMEMBER TO COVER ALL JARS AT ALL TIME. A must.
I copied this from a web site.

i thought i contributed quite well to tikeyas_moms other thread, thankyou, and there was hardly making fun, just arguing and fighting....i helped out alot when it came to what dog she wants...read the whole thing through, i just did... and i come to general alot....i see alot of tension and arguments here, but ive never seen others making fun and laughing at another to deliberatly hurt their feelings as apposed to just yelling and arguing...
i know that this thread wasnt that bad when making fun was issued, but it could have gotten alot worse...it may sound crazy, but the internet is one of the places where ppl can get hurt the most...i know this, as i was severly depressed before i came here when ppl said things to me on a different forum...and so now i try and tell ppl to tone it down a bit as to save what little pride others have left...it is a sad thing when ppl bully others....not saying that there was TONS of bullying here, just that if something wasnt said, then maybe tikeyas_mom could have been alot more hurt...:(

Thank you for the info Tikeya' mom. You have went above and beyond the call of duty.
How do YOU know my bettas aren't happy? That is the TRUE question.
You are right, you gave info but can't force anyone to do anything.
Wolfsoul, what I don't understand is where I was making fun of her. Honestly, the post where I made fun of her spelling in the dog breed thread was more hurtful than what I said here. She told me she has dyslexia, and I apologized and she accepted it. End of story. Next book.
I don't feel any guilt over anything, how my fish are kept, and what I said to her. B/c I am NOT going to be bullied or reprimanded by teenagers.

Everyone who decides to start a thread just to give advice here should either site sources, or have studied the creatures in question pretty thoroughly.
