Hiya all! This person was referred to me for information and I don't have any for her. I told her I'd post this here and see if any of you guys would have any ideas.

Thanks!

I have a Toy Poodle and I am at wits end when it comes to her eyes. I’ve had poodles b/4, but never seen anything this bad. I know poodles are notorious for tear stains, and crying all the time, but this is the worst thing I’ve ever seen on a dog. Vet put her on allergy pills (2/day) not helping, I wash her face 1-3 times a day with that stuff for tear stains, and I’ve changed her drinking water to distilled. Nothing seems to work. If I keep the area washed it stays reddish brown, if not, black. It runs from right under her eyes way down her muzzle.

Do you have any ideas/suggestions?? I really don’t know what else to do. (They say her daddy was the same way. But, I can’t stand the thought of just letting this dog live out her life with a soaked face all day/all night.)

Gosh, it sounds like she's trying everything. The only thing I can recommend is maybe an allergy specialist or a different brand of the tear stain removal. I'm lucky my Poodles don't have this problem but there have been some at work who had it pretty bad. I just had to use the tear stain removal 3-4 times a day on those dogs.

good luck!

I had the same problem on my RB pomeranian, Polly. We had to wash her eyes out every night, and put special drops in her eyes every day. Unfortunatly, it didn't help much :( Sorry, I'm not much help.

Has the vet done other exams/tests on her eyes? She may have problems like a condition called dry eyes, even though the name says dry it means that the tear ducts are not working properly & the eyes either produce too much or too little secretions. There are many other eye problems that can cause the reaction you are describing. I would get them looked at again or get a second opinion.

yes i agree

you could get your vet to have a look at your poodles eyes, there is also a condition called entropian (spl?) which is inturned eyelids

good luck with finding a cure though and please keep us posted

oh! I know this one! shadow has the same problem, the tear ducts under her eyes are clogged, its not something you can fix, but it causes a lot of tears to run down their face, shadow is a sheltie mix, and tear stains are not commen for her breed, she always has the stuff running all down her face, and sometimes it turns the colours she described :) the best tear stain removal I can recommend is baking soda and a little water, just put some of this on an old toothbrush, and it scrubbs the stain right off, much better then any commercial stain remover:D
