Blueheller is just another name for Australian Cattle Dog....
<blue heeler: Also known as the Australian Cattle Dog. The blue heeler is considered one of the world's greatest working stock dogs. It was developed in the 1830's. The breeds that were involved in it's development are: the dingo, blue merle collies, dalmations, australian kelpies, old english sheepdogs and an obscure breed called the Smithfield. The coat is dense and short. The color is blue, blue mottled, or red speckled. The average blue heeler weighs about 40 lbs. and is 19 inches tall at the shoulder. The blue heeler is also known as the australian heeler, australian cattle dog, or red heeler.

Why not wait until you move, then go to a shelter with your dog and see who gets along together? Consider rescuing a dog, and if you still want a pure-bred, there are rescue organizations for almost every breed of dog out there.

I have to recommend a Labrador Retirever....:D :D ;) ;) :p :p
Baised on my encounters/expriences with these breeds this is what I have to say:
My dad's friend, Jim, has a Blue Heeler- and it is a sweetheart.
Brittanys are very good house dogs, and are exceptionally affectionate. My neighbor had to put their Husky to sleep because it attacked their kid (ripped flesh from arm) and other dog, I wouldn't get a Husky. Malamutes I'm not too fond of, my old neighbors Malmute gave me a bad vibe, and turned me off of the breed. It was extremely/wayyyy too protective, and would try and attack every person that came in the yard/house. I couldn't even mow the lawn 5 feet from the fence because it would snap and lunge at me. Judy had a Cocker, and it peed everytime someone walked in the door, and would jump and snap at her baby (took it to the pound :( ). I wouldn't get a Chow Chow if you have another dog, they should be kept in a household with no other dogs - they are VERY aggressive also (obviously, every Chow is different tho, everyone I've see were vicious). Chows are terrible with kids too.
No personal expreiences with Bullterriers and Akitas...I think they are cute though.

This dog was evil. His name was Lambardy (sp??). He was so evil, we were thinking about calling Animal Control. Plus, the man who owned him was a giant @$$. He would leave for work around 6 am and got home around 8 pm- and would take the dog to the corner and back for its "walk". Lambardy would sit on the inclosed porch all day and whowwwwllll for hours. And in the summer, it was unbearable (sp) to go anywhere near his yard, because of the stench of the dog poop, that the man hadly ever cleaned up. I do know for a fact that he does not have the dog anymore. He got rid of it after we moved out.

Hey, hey, hey. This is NOT a place to denigrate any breed, nor to take personally anothers' feeling about a breed. Do a "search" for the type you're thinking of on Dog of the Day, and you'll find that ANY breed can be a great dog.

Yes your right- the Husky was abused. They fed it baited mice and anti-freeze for "water". They took a bat to it too (sarcastic). Actually, the Husky was never abused. She was so upset that she had to put the dog to sleep, she had to go to grief counciling (sp?) for a year.
Idiots .. If the dog was well looked after and trained and actully had some love given to it, that would have never happend.. Hukys are the sweetest dogs you can ever own I would suggest them to anyone looking for a first breed..I really feel sorry for that poor husky !!
Excuse me...they are not idiots. I feel sorry for the dog, too.
They do not bite?
Any dog could bite. Ever looked in a dogs mouth before? There are these white things juting out of their gums- those are called teeth. They are used to catch prey, bite the prey, rip up the prey, and chew the prey. Every single breed can bite, unless it's tooth-less.
Like I said, I had to intention of offending people on breeds....and I wasn't bashing your dog. I would never talk about/bash someones dog.

Alrighty whatever you say .. (just because 1 person you knew had a siberian husky that bit a child?...) oh well ...
As for saying every breed of dog can bite.. Yes i agree `100% but,..... Only a dog bites if it feels threatened, chalenged, or scared... Not every dog feels this, No dog should. Owners must be furm but suttle with punishments. That dog was "most likely" scared, chalenged or threatened by the child.. That was very uncalled for that the dog did that.. But it doent mean every siberian in the world is going to.. That dog was not properly trianed.. It only thought that its "owners" were in higher rank .. When it was Suupost to know that ALL humans are in a higher rank.. (all in all : it was no trained properly)

Ok...let me clear up the bite ordeal.
She was standing on the porch, and the dog was in the backyard. Her son was too. She called for her son to come to her, and he ran screaming to her, happy and zippy- the dog must have thought he was going after her- the dog ran after the boy and grabbed him on the arm to protect her. That's what happened.
Ending all this now.............................................si ck of going back and fourth.

YLL, please clear this up for me...who is Lambardy? Is that the malamute??
Hukys are the sweetest dogs you can ever own I would suggest them to anyone looking for a first breed..I really feel sorry for that poor husky !!
I do NOT recommend huskies to anyone as a first dog! No way...experienced owners only for huskies...guess that's just my opinion though. They are very stubborn dogs with a high prey drive, and should never be allowed off leash. They also tend to howl and dig. This is really not a dog I would encourage somebody who has no experience with dogs to get.
That said, huskies should NOT be mean or vicious dogs...they are not supposed to be protective either. You can't judge an entire breed by one experience. I've bathed some pretty psychotic labs and lab mixes too! I've been bit at by golden retrievers too--yes, the "perfect family dog!"
The owner and also the breeding of a dog play a big role in it's temperament. Just because you see a dog that looks like it's a german shepard, doesn't mean the dog was bred with the correct temperment of a german shepard..over-breeding causes alot of the problems. Along with lack of training and poor owner suitability.
Nebo is a brat....but he's also just a puppy....he's a big sweetheart, and a very intelligent, yet stubborn dog. I love sibes, and I love Nebo. :) I can definitely see myself getting another husky in the future. But hey, if YLL had a bad experience with a husky, I dont' see why we care if she wants a husky or not...obviously she wants a yellow lab! ;)
tikeyas_mom, Akita's are known to be a stubborn, strong and "dog DOMINANT" breed. They require lots of socializng, patience and training.
I love the breed, but a lot depends on the temperment
you end up with and how much work you
are willing to put into the dog.
Please consider before you get your next dog, where
will you be living, what will your school or work schedule be like. :)

I just do. You go to a Labrador breeder and pay $500+, when you can go to the shelter and get a Labrador for $35 (price at our shelter) and take it off of death row. That's just the way I am.
*used Labrador for an example.

This shocked me when I read this. It made me extremely sad- an made my want to adopt a dog and cat from the shelter even more.
The number of animals put to sleep every year: 4-6 million
The number of animals put to sleep every day: 13,698.63
The number of animals put to sleep every hour: 570.776
The number of animals put to sleep every second:0.15855
Approx. number of animals in shelter: 4,000 to 6,000
Estimated number of animals entering U.S. shelters annually: 8 to 12 million
Numbers are based in 2002.
* I know this has nothing to do with "What kind of dog should I get", but I thought I should share this startling info with Pet Talkers.
I am so grateful for the small amount of non-kill shelters- at least some animals lives are spared. It could be worse-I guess.

actually, white shepherds arent rare at all...they r very common! :D there are approx. 5000 registered in akc every year and it is the second most common colour shepherd to be registered every year! and there are all those shepherd colours too....like black and gold, bi colour, sable, blue, liver, black...etc...
i had a white shepherd, he was a great dog! his name was polar, but he got a bone disease and had to be put down :(
we know the (former) breeders personally...their dogs are regular black and gold dogs, so u would think that they would atleast have some black and gold pups, but they had all white litters every time!

my head is spinning out of control after reading this thread. I am literally dizzy, thank God I am sitting down. Have you ever heard of spellcheck?
There are a handful of people that actually make sense on this thread, and it ISN'T the majority of the people that posted, excluding YLL. She has some very very valid points.
Guess what I am thinking?? :
-wait until you move out
-see what kind of job you get
-rescue one from the shelter, they appreciate being saved
-have fun researching all the other breeds, no harm with that
-keep in mind that A LOT of the breeds you are looking at are rare breeds and are gonna cost a pretty penny to have. Think about what YLL has said, why spend $350+ on a dog when you can get one for less than $50 at a shelter and you aren't putting money in private citizen's pockets.

I was wondering the exact same thing, shais_mom......and I agree with you.
tikeyas_mom, from all these pictures, it sounds to me like you are going from looks alone. I suggest you further research the temperment of these breeds and decide what is best for you. Maybe you should wait a while after you move out before getting another dog. Another dog is twice the food, twice the time, and twice the money.
And if you are moving out at such a young age, you'd most likely live in an apartment. It is *not* easy to find an apartment that even allows dogs, let alone 2 *big* dogs.

Hi
I would highly reccomend a Golden Retriever. I have one and she never cares about a thing. Even when my brother bounces on her like a trampoline, she doesn't even budge. They are supposed to be great with any kind of dog, especially if you have a younger dog. They are kind of hyper:D

why not get another husky, :) i would recommend a puppy i dont know if your other dog is a male or female but would recommend opp sex sometimes when you try to introduce to grown dogs of the same sex you have major trouble they may both be alpha dogs try going to the bookstore or library and get a book on different dog breeds and see which one would best fit you:) :) :)

I have read threw your thread and I think you are only going for looks and will not be happy with your Choice. Its hard to find a place that allows 2 big dogs. I don't think you are making a wise decision by going only on looks. You need to think about temperment and other things. I really think you need to think about this alot more then you are.

tikeyas_mom,
IF your truely interested in finding out about AKita's temperments how about taking a look at the AKita CLub of America homepage,
and Akita Network. There are many Akita's that are given up
at shelters, because the owner was in for a big surprise when
that cute little furry puppy's temperment changed around 18 months of age.
You should consider joining an Akita e-mail list.
A good one is the AKita-l and the AKita-Network e-mail lists.
Their are some top breeders/trainers on both e-mail lists
that will be happy to answer questions what
the pro's and con's are. You can also
check out the rescue sites on the ACA list to ask
questions.
Here is the web page for ACA and Akita Network.
Hope this helps you determine whether the Akita
temperment is the right dog for you.

a german shepherd may not be good idea for ur husky...didnt u say she isnt well with other females? that makes me think she likes to be the boss dog, and so unless u get a shepherd puppy who could learn to be submissive (which u may not find at a shelter) ur shepherd could have dominance problems with tikeya....shepherds r quite prone to them...

akita's are know to be animal aggressive at times. we see several akitas at the clinic and everyone has become aggressive and even some have gotten aggressive toward us. even at the shows some of the akitas are tough to handle all these dogs have be trained and socialized. the breed is a determined breed if you do decide on a akita make sure to ck out the breeders you are dealing with if you get one from a shelter try to find out why the owners turned in.

Most of the dog breeds you have posted in this thread do not fit that discription at all. Akitas really do not fit especially the prey drive and getting along with other dogs. Obviously you haven't researched any of the breeds more then their appearance.

That is not true at all. The high prey drive is an instinct, not a learned behavior (most of the time). And some dogs you can socialize all you want, but they still will not get along with other dogs.

That doesn't mean diddly squat...every dog is different...every dog has a prey drive. My cat has been around my rats for three years, and he still stalks them. Every carnivorous animal has a prey drive...it's in their blood.
tikeyas_mom
03-01-2003, 11:16 PM
I can argue about that.. Cats are a totally different animal and they donot live in packs. If they are raised with rats who cares it wont mean a thing, but dogs on the other hand can be trianed to follow pack rules suck as pecking order and such *dogs are dependent and cats are independent*... You should know that...
If a dog is raised with kittens and is always with them, itll picture them as part of there pack, I think that you are saying that all breeds are what they are bred to be when they arnt. They all have their own personality. You can change a dog froms it bloodline. Such as a pitbull they are very misunderstood because they were Suposibly bred to fight other dogs?? That is bull cr*p. Pit bulls were bred to take down large animals such as buffalow ect. You can change any dog to be good you can make their blood line instinks almost or totally disapear if you do it right. .

I can't really understand what you've typed so far tikeyas_mom, but my suggestion to you is to go to a shelter almost every week and check out the animals they have there. One day one will pop up that will fit you, your current dog, and your family. They normally allow to bring your current animal in to see if they get along, which is what you should do. I don't think the description of the "perfect breed" you have said is available, anywhere. Nothing is perfect and nothing can become perfect. Try what i've auggested. I go to the shelter near me atleast 3 times a week, hoping to find the one thay my parents will fall in love with.

Really? Um.......the last I checked lions in Africa did. Big cats kill animals and have a prey drive, domestic cats kill animals and have a prey drive. Wolves kill animals and have a prey drive, domestic dogs kill animals and have a prey drive also. PERIOD.
You should know that
Why...I did know that. I guess I was thinking too far out of the box, viewing the bigger perspective, looking at the animals ancestors and such. Next time I will think lower.
I think that you are saying that all breeds are what they are bred to be when they arnt

You can change any dog to be good
Not really. You can't CHANGE them...because we are two totally different species. We can just MANIPULATE them to fit us, our lifestyles, and our needs. (And don't even tell me that that is bull cr*p, because it was on the Ultimate Guide: Dogs on the Discovery Channel.)
One day one will pop up that will fit you.
That is a very good point Kfamr!! ;) :D

Apparently your experience with this is about as good as your spelling.:mad::rolleyes:
My dog, from the time she was born to the time I picked her up, at 6 weeks, was raised side by side with kittens, she suckled the mom right along side a kitty. From the time, Keegan realized she was bigger than Kylie, I don't trust her with her. She is ok 50% of the time, the other 50% she is trying to eat her. I am not sure if I will ever be able to let Keegan out of the crate while Kylie is around and I am not there, I am afraid of the consequences. And some breeds, their prey drive is simply too strong to ignore.

I think you can eliminate the Shiba from your list--they are cute as heck--but also very hyper. Ours in particular has a high prey drive (just for rodents), because that is what the breed was originally bred for. He also wasn't socialized well as a pup, and doesn't accept other dogs right away--but that's just my dog, they are all different. Oh, and Kito has no patience either.

There was a post on here earlier today about tikeyas_mom and something that happened on another forum.
I'm curious what happened to it.

No, the post was here early yesterday I believe, before anything with the rabbit happened. It was not about that.

karen emailed me and told me she deleted one about my dog killing my rabbit.. That hgas to be the one u guyz are talking about.. I just want to forget it ever happend.. It hurts to think about it..
so ya I think I am gunna get an Akita or a riverdale dog from the S.P.C.A.. they were abused by a man and rescued by the spca here..:( over 50 had to be put down because they were attacking ppl. It was horrid.. There is around 10 riverdale dogs left at the spca. .. . they are shepered husky mixes.. they are soo presious. :)
