View Full Version : Murphy's diagnosis- thanks for your prayers

Our meeting with Dr. Robinson went very well. I am glad we decided to get the second opinion.

He gave Murphy a pretty thorough examination, especially in her ears and he immediately saw the tumor and said he understood why the other vet would want to take it out. It is quite large and was immediately visible to Scott and me as well. What Dr. Robinson is suggesting goes a step beyond what the other vet suggested as far as surgery. Dr. Robinson believes that in order to be sure he gets the whole thing, and prevent her numerous ear infections and reoccurence of the tumor, he wants to do what is called a Unilateral Ear Canal Resection, which in layman's terms means to not only cut out the tumor, but to reroute her ear canal and by doing that be able to have a better chance at removing the whole thing. It really sounds more complicated than it is. He drew a picture and explained it to us.

We have decided to have him perform the surgery and he will be Murphy's vet from now on. It was no offense to the other vet who caught the tumor and made the right call. It does have to do with our faith in Dr. Robinson since I have been dealing with him for so long, the fact that he goes above and beyond (as he demonstrated in wanting to take her surgery a step further), plus the fact that we also save some money too because he always has been very fair on his billing practices with me (I do not mean that to sound like we're being cheap. It is not a money issue at all, but obviously when the vet wants to help you out that way, it makes you feel good). The main thing is that trust factor.

He can't tell us if it is cancer, but once he is able to ascertain how big the tumor is and examine it, he will make a decision whether or not he believes the histopathology report needs to be done on it. I imagine he will do this, regardless, or we will have him do it. He definitely feels that Murphy has a lot of good years ahead of her and said that if he didn't, he wouldn't suggest putting her through the surgery, and he believes that her frequent ear infections will stop as a result of her ear canal being able to get more air. She will be able to come home the same day as the surgery as long as we can keep her quiet. I truly don't think we'll have a problem doing that.

I am calling to schedule the surgery tomorrow morning. I imagine it will be done on Wednesday of this week if he can fit her in. The receptionist was so busy when we left that I told her I would call back in the morning to schedule.

So, there's the scoop. I think we both feel better about everything, having that second opinion, and being able to see for ourselves exactly what they are talking about. I'll keep you posted! Your continued support and prayers are appreciated. You are all the greatest!

I think that having a doctor you trust, be it a vet or an md, and having all explained so you truly know what is going on, is very important. You have a great vet in your Dr Robinson so who better to entrust Murphys care to.

Murphy will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Love and big hugs to Murphy and you all.

I know that Murphy will be in the best of hands with Dr. Robinson and that he will do all he can to make her better. It sounds as though he may be able to do the surgery under lighter anesthesia if he thinks she may be able to go home tomorrow afternoon. That would be great!!! I'm going to be on the edge of my seat unitl we hear from you tomorrow afternoon. Every chance you get today, smother her with kisses from me and the girls. We love you Murphy! Oh, thank you, Tonya, for letting me know about Butterscotch's experience. A couple of others have told me about cats and dogs that had this procedure. It helps so much to know that it has been successful since we had never even heard of it before yesterday!! All we want is for Murphy to be happy and comfortable and to see her "dance" for a long while to come!!! She has a special "dance" when she is happy and wants something like a cookie or some good food!!! She can dance to her heart's content and will most likely get whatever she wants after this surgery is completed!!!! :D :D :D

You are all so terrific. If I could hug you all right now, I would do it in a heartbeat!!!! :D

Well, she's at Dr. Robinson's office now. The vet tech told me she would be there by 7:45 so I told her I would take Helen to school and bring Murphy on over after that. I got there at 8 and no one was there. Murphy and I walked around and around until someone finally got there at 8:50!! Murphy hasn't walked that much in a long, long time. :) Turns out the vet tech had called in sick, I guess.

Murphy was actually frisky this morning and she danced and pranced for me in the kitchen, hoping I would break the rules and give her some breakfast. I did not, and she was quite put out with me!! LOL!!!!

I'm thinking positive thoughts, but I know I will be beside myself by the time I can call at 3. She will be operated on sometime between 11:30 and 2. I'll let you know when I know something.

Logan, I think Murphy is getting really attached to you! Nothing like another girl in the family! She was a bachelors dog for way too long. She needed a mommies loving touch and even though she was put out with you this morning, she was still grateful you were there!

I hope you are the first one she gets to see when you pick her up! She needs you during this difficult time! Please give her a hug from another mommy type person (me). I am in constant prayer on her behalf today!

That is a very sweet thing for you to say, Candy. She is one special girl, and I have enjoyed having her with me these last 6-7 months. She spent most of the summer and fall with me when Scott was traveling, and even when he wasn't. It just didn't make sense for her to be at his house, alone, or boarded at the vet's office, when I could easily make room for one more. She is no trouble and has the best disposition. She is, what I think Lilly will be in her later years, just a docile, people loving dog. Exactly what we expect from our Retriever girls. In fact, she and Lilly are very much alike already, two couch potatoes!!! LOL!!!

I can't wait to see her precious face this afternoon. I am very anxious, as you can imagine.

Thank you everyone, once again, for your kind words. She is very deserving of them, I promise.

I just hung up with Mark, Dr. Robinson's assistant. First of all, she is out of surgery and is starting to wake up now. :) The surgery went well and Mark said that the tumor was far larger than what could be seen from the outside. He said that it was a good thing that we chose the option of resectioning the ear canal because there is no way that the whole tumor could have been removed otherwise. Apparently it was quite large, but Dr. R. feels he got it all. He is going to send the tumor off to be tested so we can know exactly what it is, and while he was in there, he saw some infection way down in the canal that concerned him, so he took a swab and is sending it off to identify it by culture, so he can know how to treat that. Obviously, I'm trying to remember everything he said and am probably doing a lousy job of it. She did well enough under the anesthesia that he did a dental cleaning on her too! She will have "pearly whites".

Mark says she looks like a war veteran because they have her head bandaged. He said that should elicit lots of sympathy. You had better believe it will!!!

I can pick her up after 5 pm today. He just wants to make sure she has had time to wake up sufficiently. I am so relieved that this is overwith and our girl made it through!! I, of course, am still concerned about the results of the biopsy, but we will deal with that as it comes. Our girl is coming home!!!! :) :)

I have been anxiously awaiting the news. It sounds good. I'm glad that the vet thinks he got all the tumor. Glad she is awakening. Whew! Sounds good. Just have to pray that the biopsy report is good.

Be careful when she tries to walk. Her equilibrium will be off and she might have a problem. Prayers coming for good results and a quick recovery!!

I really love this site and I love everyone who shares the same passion as I have with animals.. Such a comforting feeling to know that you have a friend whom you can count on, when the going gets tough ...

Thanks for the update, Logan. One hurdle is over with. She made it through the operation. I have to believe that the teeth cleaning was a sign that all will be well. Years ago my husband was in intensive care and someone sent him a terrarium. It just struck me at the time that you don't send that kind of thing to someone who isn't going to make it, so.... he will survive! I'm having the same kind of moment with Murphy's teeth cleaning.

Hello to everyone and thank you for all the good wishes and love that I have "felt" today regarding Murphy's surgery. She is home!!! Poor thing looks like a little peasant woman with her head all bandaged up. I'll have Helen or Scott take her picture later. She will be bandaged for one week and then go back for him to check her and change the bandage. I was able to talk with Dr. Robinson when I went to pick her up. He looked at me very seriously and said that it would have been very easy for any vet to cut out that visible tumor (which he threw away, by the way, because once he saw the other ones, he said this one was "nothing"), but what he found as a result of resectioning the ear canal shocked him. He said she had tumors all through her canal, all the way down to where it becomes horizontal, the two worst ones, totally blocking the ear canal. He said that there is no way that we could ever have effectively treated an ear infection because the canal was completely blocked. Both of those have been sent off to be evaluated. I wish I could show you in person what he drew for me. Basically, he drew a diagram of the dog's ear canal, almost like an inverted "L", but turned the other direction. This may sound gross, but he basically "peeled" it open, but cutting down the side of the vertical part. That's when he found the other tumors and the horrible infection. In all honesty, he said he doesn't know what to think about the biopsy and how it will turn out, but he said that regardless of the outcome, she will be far more comfortable. He said there was no way that he would not have had the infection cultured either, which is fine by me. I just want what is best for this girl. What I didn't ask him, and will ask, when I get the results of the biopsies and culture from him on Friday, is whether there is a chance that the same thing could be happening in the left ear. I just don't know. She is visibly uncomfortable now, but we have pain medication to keep her calm and comfortable, and he said if it doesn't seem to be enough then to call him and he will write out a prescription for her. I have NEVER seen him as concerned and worried as I did today. I can only thank God that we decided to have him look at her to start with. He is a blessing to Scott and me and to Murphy!

I apologize for getting graphic about the procedure, but I wanted to try and help you understand exactly what he did. And thank goodness he did that!!!

I'll keep you posted on how she is doing. I think we will have a rough couple of days, but we will watch her closely and get her feeling better soon.

Thank you again for all the love, prayer and good thoughts.

:( Rough morning. I gave her the medication to help her rest, and left for about two hours. When I came home, she had pushed the bandage all the way back around her neck. Both ears were exposed. Dr. Robinson is not open on Thursday afternoon. Was able to pull both ear flaps back up on her head and get the bandage back over them and the incision, but if she is doing this on day one, what will she be doing by next week? It was not a painless effort either, although I was trying to be so careful with her. She has had more pain medication and is sleeping again.

I'll have to get her a cone if she keeps this up. I'm going to try pinning a big rolled towel around her neck first, when Helen gets home and see if we can protect those ears from her toe nails.

In the meantime, Butter brought Mouse #6 into the house while I was gone. And it was alive. My poor little cleaning lady happened to see it and got it back out. That's two "live" entries and four dead ones now, in one week.

I'm tired. Is it Friday yet??

Hi folks! A quick check in. We have ice and the cable has not been trustworthy tonight.

Murphy is not a conehead. He rebandaged her and gave us the supplies to do the same, which we have, twice now. The bandage is slipping down towards her neck. She is not scratching, thank goodness. But she seems better. We took her to my parent's house with us yesterday. My mother said that she was an excellent girl and was welcome back anytime!!

She's healing, just slowly but surely. She will be checked again on Wednesday. Thank you so much for asking about her!!! I'll keep you posted.

Keeping bandages on seems to be the hardest thing........that is until she starting whining last night. :( She slept, but I had to get on the floor with her until she settled down. She doesn't seem to get drowsy at all from the medication, either type. :( She is still uncomfortable this morning, so we're headed back to the vet at 10:30, a day early, but I'm afraid the incision has gotten infected. I'll be so happy when she is healed and more comfortable. On top of the Murphy issues, I just looked out my window and saw a muddy blonde "flash" go by. It was Honey, out of the fence again. Luckily, she beat me to the backyard and is once again on her tie out. I can't even bring her in she is so filthy. :( :( :(

Thanks for letting me whine a bit.

They just hate keeping bandages on!! Poor Murphy. Good luck at the vet today. I hope it isn't infected.
Logan, I am the queen of sleeping on the floor with sick dogs. Good thing I can sleep anywhere. I even slept sharing a pillow with a bloody dog on the kitchen floor (Bandit)! Hope your back is feeling ok this morning!

Still praying for Murphy. Please keep us updated!

We are back at home and Murphy is heavily sedated (he gave her a shot). She is rebandaged and snoozing outside my office door. The drainage I was seeing was indeed an infection, which he cleaned real well. She has pulled about 3 stitches loose. :( But he said is she was going to pull any stitches loose, these were the best ones. Parts of the incision look very good, so that's promising. The main thing is to keep her bandaged and keep her quiet, so he told me that starting tonight that I could increase the medication if necessary (said she won't need anything before then).

We are leaving to go out of town on Friday and won't be back until Wednesday night. Dr. Robinson and I decided that the best thing to do for her is to let her stay with him while I'm away. People are in and out of there all weekend long and his plan is to keep her sedated and take the bandage off so the incision can get air. And if necessary, he can restitch her next week. :( I hope it won't be necessary.

No results yet from the tumor or the culture. The lab is in NY, and now they are telling him it might be Friday or later before they can get results due to the weather issues. The worst news, I guess is that he took a good look in her left ear this morning at my request, since before we were only concentrating on the right ear which had the visible tumor and the infection. He went very deep into her ear canal and there are tumors down in the left ear too. He said we will first find out what we are dealing with, then we can make the decision whether we should perform the same operation on the left ear as well. :( I'm worried, obviously, and a bit sad that our girl is so uncomfortable, but I know she is getting the best care possible. That's all we can do.

I'll keep you posted. And help me with those continued prayers, please.

Logan

Poor sweet Murphy:( So sorry to hear she's having to deal with an infection besides the post-op pain. Being sedated and staying with the vet may be the best thing for her to speed up the recovery. She's always in my thoughts and prayers.

I told you guys in my earlier post, was that after I made the doctor's appt for Murphy, I caught a glimpse of a muddy flash out the corner of my eyes. It was Honey, who had dug under the fence and was headed across my neighbor's yard. I caught up with her and put her on the tie out, once again, in the backyard. She has to have a bath before she can come back inside. Then, I came back to my desk to try and get some work done. Butter came in "his window" which was open a crack because I was hot. He brought a kicking screaming mouse with him. I snatched him up and tried to throw him back out the window with the mouse, but he dropped it on the floor and off it went!!!!! I couldn't catch it for the life of me....it was going behind furniture, tangling in the computer cords, etc. I finally had to give up when I lost it because I had to leave with Murphy.

Well, now I can gladly report that the mouse chase is over!! I had just hung up from telling the whole story to Scott, about Murphy, about Honey and Butter, and the little bugger ran right by my foot!!! This office is a mess, and now I am determined to get the floor picked up, because he was running all over the place and running through computer wires and I couldn't catch him. And where is the cat during all of this?? Sleeping, of course!!! Both of them!!! But I finally cornered the little guy, right at Murphy's tail (she is sleeping hard), covered him with a box, slide a piece of heavy paper under it and scooped him up! I didn't kill him, but I did get him out the door!!! Run, little mouse, run and don't come back!!!!! Hehehe!!!!

I'm glad I've found something to laugh at this day. I needed it!!! Now, if I can ever get my heart rate back to normal, I might get some work done. They may have to take me to the mental hospital instead of going to Florida. Sometimes I wish for a normal job, in an office, so I just wouldn't know all the stuff that is happening in this house. ***SIGH***. Maybe I should just ask Dr. Robinson to give me a shot of whatever he gave Murphy this morning, then I wouldn't care!!!! I know you guys would get a charge out of seeing my fat butt in the air trying to catch that tiny little mouse who was outwitting me at every turn!!!! Hehehe!!!

Oh my, oh my! I think your day would have done me in, Logan. First all the troubles with Murphy, then Honey....but the kicker would have been the mouse. I hate to say this but today isn't over yet. I sure hope there isn't any more excitement in store. You have had enough.

Those two cats sleeping while you dealt with the mouse is about the funniest thing yet. My need for a cat comes and goes. Today I must say it isn't really all that strong at all. ;)

And here I thought 25" of snow made MY day one for the books! Oh Logan...I think this is a case of "Murphy's Law" in maxiumum overdrive!!;) I'm so glad you were able to get THE Murphy checked out today. I hope our precious girl continues to rest quietly with her medic. and lets her boo boo and infection heal! And I was so happy to read that she will be in the loving care of Dr. R and crew while you're away!! We're still praying for an encouraging biopsy report. But I was sad to read about her other ear:( :( We'll just have to put our faith in Dr. R that he'll do what's best for her. Now, as for Honey!!!!!!!:D:D:D NAWTEEE DAWG!!! She is one cunning canine!! And it seems the meeces have taken over where the possums left off! ROTFLOL! Oh, I would have died!! Luckily, it was you playing game warden and I just got to sit back, read and enjoy a good laugh!! (Sorry friend!:)) Please give beautiful Murphy a BIG kiss from me. (You know where!!:))

I just finished helping my son dig out his car and had to come in and vegetate in front of the computer a bit and let my muscles relax. This thread was just calling to me and I could hardly wait to catch up. Oh Logan, what a hopping home you have!!!! I started laughing when I got the 'visual' of Muddy Honey and then Butter's 'gift' was the icing on the cake! Never a dull minute in your household!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I'd rather deal with the snow but you did plaster a big smile on my face with this recent update.

Poor Murphy! I am so sorry to hear the news about her other ear. Try not to get too worried though. It sounds like Dr. R is one terrific doc and I am putting my trust in him to help her along this latest hurdle, as I know you are.

Message to Butter - you know you are supposed to bring them home DEAD, and not scare your mommy half to death! Oh to have been a fly on the wall!! LOL!!!!!!!!

Logan
02-18-2003, 07:04 PM
You know, Sara, I had a screen on that window that Butter has knocked out twice. I finally gave up and let him use it as his entrance and exit when the window is open, which is usually only when I'm in the office and it gets hot in here. And sometimes when it is closed, he will still jump up there and hang on for dear life (sort of like those "hang in there, baby" posters). Well, his days doing that are numbered. I got the screen back up today, and when he hung on it, trying to get inside, I sprayed him with water! No more cat door for him. He'll have to use the same door as everyone else! LOL!!! :)

And Pam, I think I am conditioned to rodents at this point, and I wasn't even scared. Just didn't want to touch it! I think I have searched my home over years for enough hamsters that I just wanted to find that mouse before it ended up in my bed or something! LOL!! I didn't have to look hard, once I gave up, since it practically ran across my foot!!

Scott says that I need a hot bath and a glass of wine tonight. I'll only have the bath, but the wine sure sounds tempting!!!! :)

By the way, back on the topic, Murphy has slept very well all afternoon. She looks like a bassett hound, with droopy red eyes, but she has eaten, taken her medicine and now she has gone back to bed. Lilly and Honey got bathed by Helen this afternoon too!! :) So the day has ended well.

I was planning to happily report to you, tomorrow, that Murphy's bandages were coming off for good (wishful thinking on my part). Instead, I am taking her in this afternoon at 4 to be checked again. :( She has been agitated for two days now, just restless, and has been rubbing her bandaged head on anything she can. Twice, she has "bumped" Scott and me with the right side of her head and cried out in pain. And this morning, I have noticed a lot of staining on the bandage, which says "infection" to me, since the bandage is so thick and there is drainage showing on the outside. They instructed me to leave the bandage on until I get her there to prevent her causing any further damage.

The good news is that this past Thursday, I finally saw the results of the tests on the tumor and there is no malignancy! We are so grateful for that news.

Now, we have to hope that the infection is not too bad, and that our girl will be improving. It is so painful for me to see her out of sorts, and she has been the last two days. It will take a lot of convincing for me to ever believe that we should put her through this on her left ear, even if it does have the tumors too (and it does). At least the left ear is not infected at this point.

I'm trying not to overreact to this latest setback until Dr. Robinson can see her and analyze her himself this afternoon, but my heart just breaks for our senior girl. Please continue your good thoughts and prayers for Murphy. And I will update you when I can tonight.

Thanks.
Logan

Mother Of Many ~

Just a suggestion -

Ask Doc R about putting an E-collar on Murph.
It *might* reduce her desire (and ability) to *rub* the bandage on things and speed the overall healing.

Guaranteed she won't *like* the cone thingy - but it might be better if she wore one.

Prayers that she gets a good report after he sees her!!

The drainage is from three stitched areas that she pulled out a couple of weeks ago. He showed me and the incision area looks very clean!!!! :) I was so worked up and worried, but he said that within 10 days, she ought to be unbandaged for good!!!! And he said that he would not advocate operating on the left ear unless we have infection there that cannot be treated otherwise.

I feel so much better, and silly for overreacting, but she is OK!!! That's the main thing!!!

Logan, do you think you have a copyright on that emotion?:) :)
I think all of us would do exactly the same - because that is how much our furkids mean to us. And when we see and feel them in pain - oh boy! does that get us into motion with "e" motion.

I can bet that you are relieved for sure. Murphy sounds like such a dear pup. I am also happy that there may not be any further surgeries done on her. It will be interesting to see if she can hear after the bandages come off.

Hugs to you and your family.
