Well, some of you may know that my parent's cat (our old family cat), Socks, was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of months back. Things got pretty bad over Christmas vacation, but then he slowly improved. He's been doing so well the past several weeks, and was in fact "normal" at his last vet visit. Everything was being regulated just fine with the insulin shots, and his levels were down to 47, which is good.
Yesterday, my mom found him on the floor (diabetic coma or possibly sugar shock) and rushed him to the vet. They were able to revive him, but he had to stay overnight. He had a small seizure this morning, so this afternoon, my dad left work early to be with my mom. They decided to help him over to the Rainbow Bridge, because they both felt that his quality of life just wouldn't be that good if he did recover from whatever it was that happened. I just don't understand it. He was doing so well. :( My mom is not taking it well at all. She broke down at the loss of our dog Misty in 1999, and now Socks. He was with our family for 14 years. I always thought that he would live longer than that. It's really hard because nobody around me understands how my mom and I feel about this. We're getting the typical "it's only a cat" and "well, these things happen" responses from those around us, so there's no comfort there. I knew you all would understand. We're so sad for this loss. Socks really was a great cat. :(
Tearfully,
Karen :(

I know - its really hard for non-pet people to understand the pain and loss that we feel. I don't know if we even understand it sometimes.
But we know that the pain and grief is real and sometimes we need what seems like a really long time to mourn.
I'm very sorry for your loss.:(

Prayers are on the way for you and your whole family. I'm sure Socks knows he was very loved and is probably telling all the others at the Rainbow Bridge about his wonderful family. I think your parents made the most loving choice for him and he is no longer in pain. He probably feels like a kitten again now. I'm sure you will all be together again some day. Until then, he will keep an eye on you and play with all our dear animals who are at the bridge. Be at peace, dear Socks.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you! May the good memories of Socks surround you forever!

Karen, I am so sorry for your great loss of Socks. He was well loved and he knew that. He is now running healthy and free at Rainbow Bridge. He lives on in your heart and also your Mom and Dad's. Remember all the good times.

Sweet Socks- you brightened the lives of many during your little kitty life (furry lives are way too short) and your passing leaves a very big hole in your humans' hearts. RIP little one. Karen, you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. {{{hugs}}}

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Socks. I know (we all know) how much it hurts to lose such a special friend. And they may be a cat but they are NEVER "just a cat". Peace be with you and your Mom at this time of sorry.

I am so sorry to hear about Socks. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers.
As far as those idiots who make stupid comments like "he's just a cat", consider the source.
Hang in there and know that we're here for you.

I'm so sorry about Socks! There's been a lot of cats called to the Rainbow Bridge lately. :(
People who think pets are disposable make me mad.
FWIW, sometimes cats can be doing really well, then they "crash". That's what happened with RB Smokey the Elder. She had had cancer which went into remission, then came back with a vengeance.

I was so heartbroken when I read your post, Karen.:(:( My own Mr. B was diagnosed with diabetes at just about the same time Socks was. Please remember that you and your Mom did all that you possibly could. It is a very unpredictable disease. But there is no doubt that Socks knew every moment of his life, how very loved he was, and is. Please accept my most sincere and heartfelt condolences. I will be keeping you, your Mom and your family and precious Socks in my thoughts and prayers. Please come here when you need to talk. Those who are incapable of empathy over the loss of an animal are to be pitied. Love and {{{hugs}}} to you Karen. I'm so sorry:( Bless you dear Socks. Rest easy now sweetie. You will never be forgotten.

I'm so sorry to hear about dear Socks. He was definitely a very loved kitty, and lived a good life. And I'm sorry you aren't closer to home to be with your mom at a difficult time for both of you. It wouldn't make it any easier, but at least if you could actually hug each other you might feel better in your shared sorrow.
RIP sweet Socks. And hugs to you Karen, and your Mom and Dad too. :(
And a message to the RB. Ok, so you're a great place for our pets to go, but please, you have plenty for the time being, don't you?

yeah, that old it was only a cat. those people should learn to keep their mouth shut. obviously it was not just a cat to you or you wouldnt be upset. just a cat, what is that?? its a living being, and you loved it,. so they are belittling your sorrow. I hate braindead people like that. sad too, since they don't understand the love between a pet and its human!
sorry for your loss, and I know how much it hurts to lose a fur-baby.

I know this sounds sappy, but I really was moved to tears reading all of your kind responses.
Thank you so much for your kindness and support during this rough time. It isn't easy, but it's comforting to know that I have a whole huge cyber family that really understands. I forwarded all of your messages to my mom and she was really touched.
Thank you so much
***hugs***
