View Full Version : Our Murphy is not well

Logan
02-04-2003, 06:20 PM
We knew she had an ear infection, and we knew she was suffering with arithritis, all of which we expected treatment for today at our vet's office.

She is not a Golden Retriever, but she is close. She is especially close to my heart, and to Scott's heart. Today, in addition to treating her arthritis situation and her ear infection, the vet found a mass in her ear that needs to be removed. We have no idea whether it is cancer or benign. The vet just said that it needs to come out and therefore, it will.

We have to schedule the time and will do that shortly. But please say a prayer for our senior girl that we love so much. We don't want her to suffer at all, and feel optimistic that our vet wants the mass to be removed, even at Murphy's advanced age. Prayers are good. Good, positive thoughts are good. So, whatever you have in you, to wish for a precious Lab girl, please do it.

I'll keep you posted.

Logan (whose heart is breaking)

Oh, Murphy, be a good old girl and hold still for the white coats. All those young pups out there need an example in dignity at the vet's office, and I know you can provide that.

Here are some pictures of Murphy that Helen took yesterday. The "other" dog is Lilly in the picture with her. As you can tell by the dirt on the carpet, this is the "main" sleeping area for everyone!!! I can't wait to rid myself of that carpet!!!!! :)

Helen and you are mind readers for sure because as I was reading the posts I was thinking about asking for another picture of Murphy. I am so sorry that an operation is necessary but better that than *this is inoperable*. So sweet how the whole gang gets along and likes to hang out together. We're all rooting for this loyal lab, who has won our hearts as well.

Absolutely no need for apologies, Liz. I think I only posted a picture of her once, comparing Karen's Cody to Murphy and Scout (my parent's girl). They all look so much alike. In fact, I have taken some more pictures of Murphy recently, but they have to be scanned to be seen and we don't seem to have that capability at the moment, although I thought I married into a scanner!!! :)

Thank you, everyone, for your support. She is going to be ok. I just know it!!!!! :D

It breaks my heart even more, after seeing Murphy's picture :( :( He truly reminds me of Karen's Cody .. There's just something about senior dogs .. It's full of love and emotions ... Seeing Murphy and Lilly together are just so adorable..

Logan - I'm sorry but all along I thought you only have Honey and Lilly... Murphy is so precious , i wish him so well...

I'll continue to pray for him...

Rosebel, Honey and Lilly have been with me since they were 6 weeks old. Murphy was Scott's dog since she was six weeks old. This past summer, when we started dating, Murphy started staying with me a lot when Scott traveled. I just hated the thought of her being in a kennel when she could be with us. She has quickly and easily become one of my brood because I have had so much interaction with her, especially since I work from a home office and she is here all day with me. She is definitely less trouble than the others!!! LOL!!! :D

Please, please, don't feel badly about not knowing about her. Scott and I have only been married for six weeks now and I am just now remembering to put her name in my responses and signatures. Yesterday, Scott said something about "his dog" and his responsibility to pay for her surgery. "HOGWASH", I said, and let him know quickly that she is "our" dog. I've been loving her for almost 7 months now and consider her mine. I know he doesn't want to claim Butter, our cat, but he considers the others "his" too.

Murphy's surgery has been scheduled for this coming Monday. I am relieved and nervous at the same time. We don't have to wait, but it is happening fast. I think it is best to have it done on a day when we can be at home to watch over her. Monday was the day. Hopefully, she will be feeling "chipper" by her birthday on Friday!!!! One can hope, right??? I certainly am!!!! :)

Prayers are appreciated. We love this precious girl so much.

All this means is that I didn't do a good enough job of introducing her and that's my fault!!! I have loved her since I laid eyes on her and that was 3 days after I met her dad. It didn't take long for me to lure her in..............maybe that's how I ended up with her dad!!! LOL!!! :)

Logan, I'm sure you taking Murphy in had something to do with Scott falling in love with you! Once he saw your heart of GOLD how could he not fall head over heals in love with you?? I'm glad you posted her picture. It is wonderful being able to put a face to the name when you pray!

Please make sure you keep us posted and don't forget to have lots of Frosty Paws around for the very special birthday of this wonderful girl next week! ;)

A change of heart........

Scott and I talked a lot in bed last night and again this morning. Our furnace is out and we had lots of "pillow time"!!!! It was the only way to stay warm!!! Anyway, we talked and I started wondering about getting a second opinion from my vet, who I trust completely. Murphy has been going to a different veterinarian for years, and they adore her there, but it isn't "my vet". Scott is in agreement with me, so today, I cancelled the surgery for Monday and instead, we are taking Murphy to see Dr. Robinson on Monday afternoon. Dr. Robinson is just so fair and probably hurts himself by being so fair, but I do trust him and I think it won't hurt just to get his opinion before jumping off into this surgery. Only the BEST for our Murphy girl. We will know what direction we're going to take by Monday afternoon.

In the meantime, she is fine and comfortable, even if I am not, since it is so cold in this house!!! My fingers are freezing!!!! Help is on the way, hopefully, in the form of a HVAC expert, this afternoon. Hopefully they can install a new unit today or tomorrow.

I think you are doing the right thing! Surgery is very invasive and anytime you put them under it's a risk. Especially the senior dogs! Perhaps your vet will be able to give you another option but if not atleast you know two vets are in agreement!!

Hope you get warmth soon!!

Sending you all a warm hug!!
Hope the furnace man gets there quickly!

Good luck on the second opinion. It is always good to get another opinion of a vet you trust. Hope he will have some good news.

You will be in my prayers.

We'll be anxiously awaiting Dr. Robinson's report. I know you'll do whatever is best for the beautiful Murphy girl. Hope you're doing lots of cuddling and snuggling, helping to keep your Mom warm this cold and heatless day/night, Murphy!;) Lots of hugs and kisses to you sweetie!

Thank you, again. I truly believe that we will feel better after getting Dr. R's ideas on the whole situation. I was up with Murphy a great deal of last night, as was Scott (after I woke him :o ). She was just not comfortable. I worried about the temp in the house as it was so cold, but our bedroom was heated with an electric heater, so it wasn't as bad.

Anyway, she is favoring the right ear. You can tell it when she walks, the way she holds her head, etc. We are giving her tons of TLC and waiting anxiously for 4:30 on Monday, so Dr R can check her out completely.

Prayers are appreciated. We're saying our share, for sure!!

Logan,

Prayers will continue for Murphy.Maybe some of her discomfort
is due to the cold.(?) I know my bones really ache (arthritis)
when the weather turns very cold. Is Murphy on any antibiotic
or pain medicine in the meantime? Hope she's feeling better
soon & Monday brings better news for her.
