Losing Teeth

today my sister found some blood on the chewed up part of Mickey's stick. my mom said he might be losing a tooth or maybe scratched his gums with the stick.

just curious to know - when do puppies start to lose their teeth? and how do you find them? just teeth laying around and that's how you realize he's lost one? i havn't found any info like this on the net. please help :)

I got this out of a vet book:

Pups begin to aquire permanent teeth about 4-5 months of age. Usually last for about 2 months.

Good luck in finding the teeth. In all the dogs I every owned
I was only able to find a couple of baby teeth from two of them.
Some people on Pet Talk have been quite lucky finding
their pups baby teeth.
Mine must have swallowed theirs. :)

Yep they start falling out around 4 months. They can actually have an overbite during this time too since the mouth will eventually have 42 permanent teeth. In smaller dogs the overbite is not as noticeable.

It is rare to find a tooth. Usually when you see the bleeding one has just been lost and is the best time to find one (again if your lucky). they just all seem to have a way of going to doggie tooth land (very mysterious). :rolleyes:

Keep plenty of chew toys around during the first year of pups life since after the major K-9 teeth come in you have erupting molars coming in too and just like a human baby it is discomfort. Mine learned to love chewing ice cubes during this stage! It helps quite a bit! ;)

Yep! Of course Candy is right! Ice Cubes are great! I also put his tennis balls in the freezer so they were nice and cold when Cody teethed. I think they wind up in poopy-land but far be it from me to check it out! :eek: :D Believe it or not, I actually missed those pesky, sharp little needle baby teeth! It meant he was growing and I really wanted him to stay a puppy a little longer! :p

My puppy Mattie started losing her teeth pretty soon after we got her. Yes, we did give her ice cubes, and that helped. We also gave her some soft rubber chew toys, and she liked them a lot. We found about five of her teeth just lying around the house!!:rolleyes:

Be happy Mickey is a puppy and loosing his teeth! Teddy is 11 years old and only has 14 (or so, I stil say he only has 5!) of his 42 teeth :rolleyes: I've been brushing his teeth often but its something his breeder ran into with his breeding stock and when he found out he quickly purchased new dogs, that way his new pups wouldn't have these problems, of course he kept his old dogs. But poor Teddy. He has no teeth. He is like an old man. LOL. Poor Guy.

How was the teeth problem in his breeding stock? Can teeth problems be genetic?

I have 3 of Tonee's baby teeth. And a lock of her tail hair from her first hair cut. They are framed with her baby picture. The frame shop said it was the strangest thing yet that they had framed.
