Ok, I will give another clue
His first name is Frederick. His last name is the more famous one.
We have a museum here in Vermont that has some of his bronze sculptures and they are beautiful and some are quite large!( I saw them last summer)
If you still can't guess I will post the answer and a link later today.:)

I have some more new questions

1) What breed of horse are the famous Budweiser horses?
2) What breed of horse does actor William Shatner (Capt. Kirk of Star Trek) own?
3) What is the Coggins Test and which horses must take it?
4)What breeds make up Appendix Quarter Horses? What 3 kinds of horses can be registered as American Quarter Horses?
5)What 2 breeds make up Anglo-Arabs?

I think they are a good mix of questions so hopefully you guys can answer them. I will give you guys more time to answer my other question too. :)

My guesses:

1) Clydesdales- I got to pet them at the Missouri State Fair
2) Saddlebreds & Quarter Horses
3) A coggins test is when they screen the blood for the nasty virus called " Equine Infectious Anemia". All horses traveling through other states, and for events must have a coggins test done.
4) If I remember correctly a Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse makes an Appendix Quarter Horse.

I'll leave some questions open for others. :)

Good job YLL!
All are correct! For number 2, I was just thinking of the Saddlebreds but he probably has some QH's too.
For number 3, I just want to add that the test is required by law on any horse to be sold, shown or brought across state lines.(like you said)
The 2nd part of question 4 and question 5 still need to be answered as well as my previous question about the cowboy artist.;)

Quite Frankly, I give up on the artist question. I am horrible with people names. Tell me the name of a horse, I know who it is, but people....

As for the second part of #4: Paints, Appys, and Thoroughbreds?

and #5: Thoroughbred and Arabian, but has to maintain the 50/50 blood, I think, right?

This is The Princess Isabella, out of the three year old mare Regina. She is just 6 months old.

Here she is playing cutting horse with her dad. I wish you could see the wine color of her mane.

Her is my girl, Lady Roxanne. She will be three soon.

I discovered her with a swollen knee today. Hence the support wrap to try to reduce the swelling overnight. Don't know if it is a sprain, an aggrivated old injury, or protein problem.

You'll get to see him strut Tues. after we move him out to were Izzy is and I clip him and ride.

Hope you like them!

Trying to think of some mind boggling questions for you, but I am typing one handed at the moment with a baby sleeping in my lap.:)

I have no clue if these questions were posted already, but I am not going through 17 pages to find out. LOL!

*Why is it an extremely bad idea to feed a horse hay on a sandy surface? (i.e a beach)
*What is an incised wound? What is the first concern when finding a horse with this injury? What first-aid action (s) should be taken?
*What is a puncture? What is the first action to take? What else should be done?
* Stallions and gelding have ___ (#)teeth. Mares have ____ (#)teeth.
*Horses have a ____stomach and a _____ intestine. Which is why they can't handle large amounts of grain.
* ____, _____, molasses,______, _______, _______, and iodine are neccarry for life of a horse.

True or False: If false, correct it to make it true.

A horse should be watered after a hard, sweaty work-out. After the horse has gotten a drink, it should be walked to get cooled down.

A horse should not be watered after eating oats/grain, because it can swell in the stomach causing colic.

Ok...that is more than enough. Heeheehee. :p

Answer from last question on page 1 - Isn't it just called "parking out?" I ride at a saddleseat barn with all A rated show Morgans and Saddlebreds. Check out the barn at I ride hunter/jumper.

Now here are my questions:
1). When is it required, besides when they ask you, to post on the incorrect diagonal at a show?
2). Why does a horse's mane have to fall on the right side?
3). Do carriage drivers carry their whips on the inside or the outside, and what is the rason behind it?

And just some pics...

Luka-Lop, I still have 8 questions that I just posted that need to be answered. Don't post questions until all/most of the answers have been guessed (from the prev. questions from another member) before posting more questions. Otherwise it gets too confusing. ;) :) It's ok, lol, I know you are new here.

Injested sand cannot pass through the horses gut and will settle, and could possibly cause colic problems as it builds up. That is why we feed things like Sandclear, which is a psylium fiber (Metimucil for horses) for a week each month, to for a gel like coating on the sand buildup and help it pass.

*What is a puncture? What is the first action to take? What else should be done?

Oh, boy, nasty things. When an object has poked into the horse's body, creating a sort of tunnled wound into the flesh or hoof, such as a nail in the hoof. Roxy did this last summer on her knee, right into the joint! First thing to do is to give a toxid tetnus shot to ensure that tetnus is not going to settle in. I do this even if the booster is current just to be safe. Next look for and remove as much debrie as possible, including the culprit of the wound, and flush with an antiseptic/antibactirial solution such as betodine. The rest depends on location and depth, but in general needs to be kept clean, needs to be flushed with the solution every to everyother day, and needs to be kept open so it can drain. The goal is to get it to heal from the inside out, otherwise it becomes an abcess.

I ramble enough as it is, someone else want a shot at the others?

Luka-pop, welcome! We need more people here! Hope you have fun! Love that Morab you posted, one of my favorites!:D

First the answer to my artist question is Frederic Remington! I posted 2 pics and a link to read more about him. I can't find the link I had before showing a bunch of the bronze sculptures including the Rattlesnake one. I will have to dig some more to find it.

For question 4 I was looking for the 3 combinations that can be registered, maybe I didn't word it right but the answer is QH + QH, Appendix + QH, and TH + QH.
For question 5 the answer is English Thoroughbred and pure Arabian. You were right about that Equine.:)

I love the pics of your foal, in that light she just looks like a dark liver chestnut but it will probably change! Can you show some photos of her mane color in daylight? How is Roxanne's leg doing, any better? Are you going to have the vet look at it?

Yes, Parking or Parking out, I think I said the answer some pages back in this thread. Welcome to this thread Luka!:)
I checked out your link and it looks like a great place to ride!
I love the 3 stallions you have there, I noticed two of them have UVM bloodlines. Have you ever been to the UVM Morgan Horse Farm? They have some very beautiful horses!
I will have to think about some of the questions you and YLL posted, I will come back later to try to answer some.

Sorry for posting questions before the previous ones got answered (oops didn't know any better), but IMO, it's too confusing as it is. People can't go through and read 19 pages of posts (at least I don't have the time) to follow the convo. And people also can't wait for the question to get answered, especially if it's a tuff one that people have trouble with. It just gets too hectic. Maybe we should start a new post once a certain type of question is answered, like if you're going to ask about color/breed, do it all on one thread, and if you're going to ask about riding style, or anatomy, or behavior, etc. do it as separate categories (or maybe even put a different Subject in with each post). Just my opinion as a Newbie.

Thanks Vermontcat! No, I've never been to the UVM Morgan Farm, but I wish I could. Where/when is it? Actually, one of the stallions, Who's Yer Protege, was recently gelded. BTW, do you ride saddleseat? Just asking cuz parking out is a saddleseat thing, ya know~

You shouldn't have to go through all 19 pages, just the last 3 or so, to get the latest questions/answers. You don't have to wait until all are answered, I noted "all" or "most".

This thread involves everything about horses, so anything can be posted here, if it has to deal with horses. Making new threads for 16 different topics about the horse would take up too much space on the board for other topics to be posted by other fellow Pet Talkers. Maybe when we hit page 20, I will make a new thread and get rid of this one. ;) :)

She is like a coffee bean color, but her legs look different. Maybe I am just trying to read a special color into her when she is just a good old liver. But she is not the purplish or blackish liver I am used to that you see in Arabs, more brown.

Here are a couple of close up of her legs. I will try to get some closer shots of her mane in the sun, if it ever comes back out again.

As for Roxy, she is doing great. The swelling is gone. Her knee is nearly normal, except she has a hard knot on the top of the inside of her knee cap. I will watch this for a day or two, see if it recedes. She is not lame, no heat, and now no swelling. My rule of thumb is as long as it is healing or getting better, to keep working with it on my own, but if there is no change or it worsens within 3 days, then the vet pays a visit. I have been "blessed" (?!) with many experiences of injuries and illnesses with horses, and although I don't always know all the terms and such, I do know how biology and such works, and know enough about meds and treatments to get me through alot before I have to spend money on the vet to have him tell me what I already know.
;) I certainly don't recommend anyone else going this route without someone to help eyeball the situation, but it works for me quite well.

Luka-pop,

I just went to the Rock Hill site. I love Moonraker and Protege's pedigrees! I am not really big on the Waseeka lines, as I am not really a saddle set and Saddlebred person, but the Beamington is one of my favorites, Upwey Ben Don and the UVM lines are just awsome! I love the look of both of them too! Jeez, sometimes I wish I were closer to the East coast so I could visit the UVM farm whenever I wanted.

Equine, your posts about your horses swollen leg reminds me of Knight a leopard appy at Camp.

When we brought the herd in one morning, Greg noticed that Knight's front left leg was completely covered in blood. He took him out of the corral to find that Knight impailed himself on something out in the field. Right away Greg called the equine vet and he came down to the corral to check out Knight. He cleaned up the wound and gave him the "lockjaw" shot. Over the next two weeks or so- it was Madi's (my friend) and I job to flush out the wound and clean it out every morning and night. What fun! ;) We had to take a washcloth soaked in steaming hot water and press in over the hole. A couple of minutes later puss and small pieces of bark would come ooozing out of the wound. Then we had to flush it out with Idoine (I think that's what it was...having a brainfart!), and cover the leg in Vasolene. OI! The poor boy- his leg was extremely swollen, he could barely walk. After a while the swelling went away and the wound eventually healed. I have a picture somewhere of Knight getting is wound flushed out, maybe later I'll dig it up.

Oh, yes, that was very much like Roxy. I had her in with a BIG (17.2) Percheron gelding, and my little itty bitty (14.1) gelding. Well, there was a tussle, and sure enough, the lady had to get hurt.

BTW, the knot on her knee is gone, so I think it is over. I will still keep an keen eye on it for a week or so to see if it flares up again.

It took me a while to find the link because they moved their website, here it is
http://www.uvm.edu/morgan/
You can also go to the American Morgan Horse Associations website and find many Morgan links at www.morganhorse.com
The UVM Farm and horses are beautiful. They are in Weybridge, Vt near Middlebury. Every summer they have an open house, this year it is on Wed. August 13th. You should go if you have a chance, it is free that day and they have many Morgan demonstrations to show how versatile the breed is. I didn't go last summer because it was like 100 degrees that day but I did go the year before and I hope to go again this year!
Luka, I don't ride Saddleseat, mostly English and I used to do hunter/jumper, now more pleasure riding and Western trail riding. I have seen plenty of the Saddleseat at local Morgan shows though. I ride my friend's Morgan horse who it seems just naturally will Park when I stop to talk to her while on him or when I am getting on or off of him.;)
Ok, I gotta work on answering some of these questions, I will be back later.:)

Vermontcat

Ok, I found a couple of other links to the Frederic Remington sculptures
http://www.4youryard.com/page_1.html
http://www.fredericremingtonart.com/sculptures.htm

Now I will try to answer a few questions
First YLL, Don't mares and stallions have the same # of teeth?
Horses have small stomachs which is why they can't handle large amounts of grain.
True or False #1 is False, a horse should be cooled down after a workout before offering a small amount of water.
True or False #2 I think is True.

Luka,
#1) Is it when changing direction in the ring that you need to be on the incorrect diagonal?
#2) The mane falls to the right side so it is out of the way when tacking up the bridle(doing the buckles). I have known a couple of horses whose manes refuse to stay on the right!
#3)I am guessing that the whip is carried on the outside because in English riding the crop is carried on the outside.

Desert Arabian
04-03-2003, 04:39 PM
Vermontcat, nope stallions/geldings have 40 teeth (12 incisors, 4 tusks, 24 premolars and molars. Mares have 36 teeth. You are correct on the other answers. :D

Luka-pop
04-03-2003, 05:25 PM
Here are my answers...
1) you switch your posting when you're reversing directions, but in that case, there is no outside or inside. However, the only time you're supposed to post on the wrong diagonal is when you're going for your Vitory Pass at a horse show.
2) The mane falls on the right side, because in the medieval times, the soldiers/knights used to carry their swords on their left hip. When they were riding their horses, and when they had to pull out their swords during battle (done by reaching the right hand over to the left hip), their sword used to get caught in the manes that were on the left. So they forcefully made the mane fall on the right to prevent entanglement. The tradition just became a standard over the years.
3) They carry their whips on the inside, because carriage driving began in England. In England, they used to have bushes and hedges on the outsides of the roads. When they were carrying their whips on the outside, their whips repeatedly got caught on the bushes. That's why they decided to carry the whips on the insides.

interesting, eh.

HoRsELUvR
04-03-2003, 07:48 PM
yea that is pretty interesting.I should have known that switching posting diagonal when you switch directions, cuz my riding teacher is always reminding us to do that!

Luka-pop
04-04-2003, 07:43 AM
Those were really good guesses though. My old instructor used to tell me that I had to switch diagonals and the side of the crop! Geez

HoRsELUvR
04-04-2003, 03:42 PM
Yea i know its kind of annoying to switch your crop every time you go in a different direction, so i usually just leave it where it is.

Vermontcat
04-05-2003, 09:20 PM
Luka, yes that was very interesting.:)

I guess we are ready for a few new questions, I have two easy ones.

1) How long is the gestation period for a pregnant mare?
2) How soon after birth can a foal stand and walk?

YLL, were there any other unanswered questions from before? If there were maybe you should post the answers.

Luka-pop
04-06-2003, 08:10 AM
Hmmmm. I've never birthed a foal.
1) no clue
2) I know that zebras and giraffes can stand and walk around in 10 to 20 minutes.

Desert Arabian
04-06-2003, 09:40 AM
A mare is pregnant for 11 months, generally right after the foal is born it stands up (sometimes they look around a bit then get up)- they do that because in the wild they would be easy targets for prey.

Vermontcat
04-06-2003, 09:16 PM
YLL, you are right about the pregnancy lasting 11 months.:)
The info I have said that the foal will stand and walk within an hour or two of birth. It is so cute to see them try out their wobbly little legs for the first time.:)

I thought of one more question for those of you who ride in horse shows you should know it.

What does it mean when a horse in a show has a red ribbon tied in his tail?

YLL, I think your Zebra is so cool!

Kicker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actyually...in the Hunt field also

Luka-pop
04-07-2003, 06:20 PM
Kicker, or also "Watch out! My horse doesn't like other horses so don't get too close." (bite, charge at the horse, buck, etc.)

Here's one for a shower!

Saddleseat riders "park out." What do hunters do? It's when the horse's front legs and hind legs line up (what's the show term for the position?).

Equinebehaviorist
04-08-2003, 02:35 AM
Square up? That is what some halter horses do that sounds like this, anyway. I am a shower, but I rein and do halter and WP, not english.;)

Vermontcat
04-08-2003, 12:29 PM
Deli and Luka you are both right, the red ribbon means the horse kicks and you better not get too close!
I wish every rider would know what it means and respect it!
I had a bad experience in one of my first shows as a teen riding my favorite horse who was a kicker and a girl passed me so close on the inside that our knees and stirrup irons bumped together. Sure enough my horses ears pinned back and she was ready to kick the other horse when I used my inside rein to correct her and she bucked me off! We had to stop the class and I got back on and finished but didn't win anything.:( My riding teacher said I did the right thing so she didn't kick the other horse but I think I should have just let her kick her.:p

I think Equine is right, or is it Square Off or Stand Square?

Luka-pop
04-08-2003, 07:02 PM
Squaring is correct!

My friend was on the outside with a horse-friendly horse (Jackson), and this other girl with a kicker horse actually passed her too close on the inside. The horse that got mad at Jackson kicked for Jackson, but ended up kicking my friend's shin (that horse kicked high!). My friend was taken to the hospital and x-rayed. Thank goodness all she had was a really badly bruised shin, not a broken one. The girl should have known that her horse was a kicker and should have taken caution!

delidog

I saw a Horrible Incident when I was younger and working at a farm in N.J.
a horse was not "Tagged" as a Kicker...and unfortunately, kicked another...broke his hind leg clean...but unfortunately, since he was a lesson horse....his name was Scarborough Fair...he had to be euthanized...:(
I will never forget that day as long as I live....
There are raesons that people come up with these ideas and "Rules of the Ring"...people should abide by them...

Vermontcat
04-09-2003, 08:36 PM
Luka and Deli, those are sad stories about the kickers.:(
When I was a riding camp counselor we had one horse who was always trying to kick the horses next to him when we got them ready for the lessons. Two of the other riding counselors made the mistake of walking between him and another horse and getting kicked by him.(on different days). They both had hoof sized bruises on their thighs for the rest of the summer!

So does anyone have any new questions? If not maybe I will come up with some new ones tomorrow.

Deli, you got me curious so I did a search and found out that
Molly Ashe and her bay mare Kroon Gravin won!
Ashe was one of only 3 horse-and-rider combinations to jump a clean first round and advance to the jump-off. Ashe was then the only one to go clean over the eight-obstacle jump-off course, crossing the timers in 45.376 seconds.

Check your PM's.:)

The winner this year was the Ever so talented Chris Kappler and Royal Kaliber...second was Meredith Michaels and Shutterfly..OOps her name is now Beerbaum...she married Marcus..Eros and Annie were 3rd...Laura Kraut and May were 4th...

Meredith beat Chris' time at 42.40...but had 4 faults...Chris went double clean at 43.92....sometimes careful is good...also luck of the draw...in order of go!!

I still don't think that Kroon Gravin made an appearance...or she got knocked out Very Early.......

Vermontcat...I get The Only magazine to get in all aspects of horse business...it is the Chronicle of the Horse...it is 52.00 per year...and is published weekly...what a deal;.....it is the most up to date....
or you can go to their website..chronicleofthehorse.com

Deli, you are right for the first four questions!:D
But the site I got the trivia from says that Dressage is the first part of the 3-day event.
(it makes sense to me so the horses wouldn't be so tired out when doing the Dressage moves);)

Just Kidding!!!!!!!!!!

Well....if you consider that 'hippo' is latin for horse, and the 'nails' of a horse are his hooves, then an electric sander is the tool I use! Takes me up to an hour a hoof to get that glass hoof look for the shows! Then a coat of color cooridinating shoe wax, and two coats of polish, and we are ready to go! :D

You are TOO funny!!!!

HA!!!!!
I love it!!!!!!

Set the scene!!!!

Crowded, smoky room....perhaps a gym of some sort...The coffee is flowing....

One woman, walks to the podium in the front of the room....
She is new here....
She shakily makes her way up the steps,Positions the mike to her height...
Clears her throat....AHEM!!!!
(This helps the butterflies in her stomach calm down,)

Its' Now or Never she tells herself!!!!!

Hello...My name is Delidog!!!(DELIDOG?!?!?!?!)

"I Am a Hippofile!!!!!!"...she cannot believe she hears this coming from HER throat....
But now it is out....
A Huge weight is off of her shoulders...Oh that Monkey on her back...Has been clinging since childhood...when she saw her first episode of "Mr.Ed"!!!!
Now she knows She is on the road to Hippo Recovery!!!!!!!

Clapping from other members in the room....(they have All been here before!!!!!!!)

The first step is the hardest......(She recalls This in her thoughts)
1)
The first step is Denial.....
as she blurts out.....
"I swear...That was not me feeding, mucking out, turning out, and then schooling 8 horses....The Morning of My Wedding!!!!!"

"You got that story from My Ex-Husband" she said...You know the one that said..."Its' the Horses or me!!!!!!!"
Hope he found All of his clothes that were tossed out the 3rd story window!!!!
Hope hes' happy in somplace like a high rise in N.Y. or Miami!!!!

Maybe Next week Delidog will have had time to come back to reality
I'm not sure if having "Black Beauty" as her Higher Power is a Good Choice

Tune in next week...to see if we have made it past Step one in her recovery!!!!!!
Does she really Want to do this for herself????or is she doing this for Ole' Red in the Barn?!?!?!?!??!

Now wait a minute, who said I wanted to be cured of being a Hippofile? I am danged proud of it!!:D Though the DH does wonder why he is second fiddle to all the horses of the world. Geez, they get WAY more kisses and hugs than he does on any given day. Hmm, maybe I should consider if this is going too far?....Nah! Who am I kiddin'? Everybody knows, even as much as I love my DH, I would rather sleep in the barn than in the house. I just wish I could get him to join me out there!

Sorry I haven't been as active lately. It is SPRING in my parts and I am horsen' around as much as possible. Got some reallly nice ponies under me these days.

Oh, no, like I said, it is SPRING here :p and I am out with the horses all day and as late as I can most days. Been grazing my beauties for several hours a day to get them ready for the big day when they get to stay out in the big pasture!

Okay, we need new questions.... let's see. Can't think just yet, let me pound my brain for a few.

I am going to be taking about a week and a half off to write my books, so I will be on here a bit more for a while. :D

O.K.....Lets' see if we can answer some questions:

Name the parts on an English Saddle

What is the breed of dog used in foxhunting????

What is the name of a series of poles on the ground..set at 18"apart?????

Can anyone name the class in show jumping where the degree of difficulty of the jump earns you the most points???and you have your choice of which jumps to jump to accrue the most points in said class???

Name the class in show jumping that is not only held outside, but includes jumps such as The Bank,The Grob,Double Ditches and your every day Water jump????

Where was The World Cup held this Year??????

Vermontcat
04-24-2003, 03:37 PM
Hi Deli!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

I have a couple of answers for you...

I do believe that Foxhounds are used in Foxhunting.

Are these the poles you are talking about
CAVALETTI (Italian) meaning ground bars or rails standing firm on low stands. Schooling over cavalletti is important for both horse and rider. Using cavaletti you can work at the walk, trot or canter without worrying about plain poles and rails that move very easily when touched and can be dangerous as they roll away.

http://www.silktree.com/images/p27b.jpg

I will get back to you on the Show Jumping questions, I am drawing a blank on them now but I can picture them both!

Good Guess, Vermontcat.....
However, when you combine a cross country course (Grob,Bank,Double Ditches) with a stadium course,Water Jump...
You get what is known as a "Derby".....

The Rhode Island Jumping Derby...held Labor Day weekend at Glen Farm,Portsmouth,Rhode Island.....

The Derby at Hickstead...(10'6" Bank!!! ) are the two best examples....

I will now check out Dog General...Gotta see 'em pics!!!!!!
