View Full Version : K9 Karen's Cody is ill
Some of you may be aware that K9Karen's Cody has been very ill for several days now, last Thursday I think to be exact. It came on quite suddenly with many symptoms that would suggest something neurologic. She has had him to the vet's several times and the feeling is that it might have been a stroke or a seizure of some sort. He was seeming a little disoriented and walking into walls and his eyes were rolling on exam. I just got a brief update from Karen, and Cody is still not himself. His appetite is down and he isn't going potty like he should. He hasn't lost any ground, but he isn't snapping out of it like we would all like to see happen. He just celebrated his 11th birthday and is such a special boy to all of us Pet Talkers. All prayers would be very much appreciated for this sweetie and for Karen as well. There have been so many sick Pet Talk furkids lately that need our prayers. {{{Hugs}}} to Karen and Cody and prayers for a complete and speedy recovery!

Thanks Everyone! Cody was doing better the last few days, we even did a little play wrestle yesterday for some excercise, since I've been afraid to walk him in such freezing weather plus his condition. He seemed Ok, but this morning acted funny again. I HAD to go to work to show my face, but I've been a wreck. I called home and he has yet to poop. I had wrapped his antibiotics in PB this morning as usual but I practically had to shove them down his throat. Yikes! I refuse to call home anymore, it's too upsetting, so I'll just check him out when I get there These past few months have been lousy. I can't pray any harder....Thanks for all of your caring and prayers. I could just cry.

Thank you! Thank you!..over and over.... I couldn't wait to get home last night, I was so worried and sick.....turns out, Cody greeted me at the door, with not as much enthusiasum as usual, but at least he was there with wagging tail. He ate all his dinner, begged for some of mine (yeah, I obliged) so I was thrilled.! He pestered me for a walk although he only walked to the corner of the Big Block, instead of his usual in/out/around/through/over/pee everywhere "I own the block" ritual. I settled for 10 minutes instead of an hour. He did his potty things (yay!). He's still quieter than normal and I feel awful for all the times he bothered me and I ignored him. So now, he's brattier too, cause I just give in to his every whim..I'll worry about the repercussions later. This morning he refused his "peanut butter pills" so either he's not hungry or is wise to my little tricks. I think the latter cause he can be a smarty pants. I honestly don't know how I'd cope without all of you. I know you all truly understand, esp. when so much seems to pile up at one time..when it rains it pours. I sincerely love all of you and am so grateful you're my friends....
OH KAREN THANK GOD!!!!!! THIS IS JUST THE KIND OF NOTE I HAVE BEEN WAITING TO READ. I WOULD SPOIL THE BIG GALOOT TOO AND HE COULD HAVE ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING HE WANTED TO EAT FROM MY PLATE TOO! {{{{HUGS AND PRAYERS STILL GOING UP FOR YOU TWO}}}}
The prayers DID really help !! hurray for Cody !!

You know we are worried about Cody too, so you don't have to do all the worrying. Good to know he seems somewhat better and made some stinkies for you. As far as the peanut butter refusal, yah, he's got your number. Try some soft cheese that you cn make a cheese ball with, and whatever you do, don't let him see you near the pill bottle when you are preparing it.

Thanks AGAIN everybody!! My sweet pumpkin still isn't himself but he's eating and doing his "duty". And yay! He took his PB pills last night! I had to LOL..Sue.. that's SO true.. I have to hide the bottle of pills when I roll them but I swear he smells them from miles away!! Do the antibiotics make them drink a lot?? And yes! I actually did think of washing my hands.. sometimes my brain works to try to out-smart him! Somebody made a comment to me yesterday, (since they grew up with a total of 5 dogs so they're experts)that this episode means Cody is on his way downhill esp; because he's 11 y.o.!  I had to put my hands behind my back to keep from knocking them silly! I'm glad the weekend is here so I can spend more time with him. my mom thinks he's so used to me being home more now that he's "pining" away for me!! I'm also saying prayers and sending hugs and kisses to all your ill sweethearts too. Just cause Cody is ill, I still have you all in my heart!!!!
Sudilar
01-24-2003, 10:37 AM
Karen, the person who told you he is on the way downhill knows nothing!!!!! This is probably just an episode that has to be dealt with. When my Great Pyr was @ 9-10 yrs. old, I was told that she would not be with me much longer. Hah! She lived to 12 1/2!!!! So don't listen to those who think they know everything! Look at Killian and his struggles. He's still hanging in there! So don't let a jerk like that tell you anything!
Does the vet have any more ideas on what caused poor Cody's episode? Hang in there! Sometimes it takes a while to recoup. If you could just find out what caused the episode, then you can fight it. Good luck and give yourself and Cody a big hug from us!!

A friend from work just told me her kitty had a stroke 2 years ago, similar to Cody's actions, and it took about 2 months before he was back to normal, alto he still walks with his to the side a little. I'm going to call the vet this weekend so I can bring in a urine sample, the one test they didn't do. I'm still watching his every move. I gave him one of my headlocks last night and kissed him furiously all over his eyes and cheeks and begged him to tell me what was wrong, and he gave me the wettiest, slurpest kiss!! AW! boo, hoo, Sob, sob... I thought I was going to have another "Big One"! My heart was beating sooo fast!! Sue.. do the antibiotics make Killi drink a lot??
Sudilar
01-24-2003, 04:08 PM
No, Karen, the amoxicillin doesn't make Killian drink alot, but he isn't a big drinker to begin with. It does make his appetite go away. He is back to only one meal a day. He refuses his breakfast. :(
My brother's dog had a stroke and it took him a while to recoup, but he did recover!

Sorry I am a little late. That must have been so scary. I am so glad that he is starting to feel like himself again. Also don't listen to that person that said cody is on his way out. Dogs are living longer and longer. There was a dog at my job that just went to the RB. He had just turned 20 years old. His name was spirit. This is probably just a scary episode that will pass. And Cody will live many more years.

The silly big galoot is getting better...must be all those lovely prayers that we both can feel..The only thing I notice that upsets me terriibly is that he has a problem with his left leg. He struggles to get up but it looks as though he's not putting total pressure on it when he walks, but he's not holding it up. I caught him licking his foot a few times too. I examined it the best I could but couldn't find a thing embedded or cut, but he growled slightly and pulled it away. I massaged his back legs and moved them around. We have a vet appt on Wed for his distemper shot, so I'll have Dr. Fox give him another physical. Of course when he's there, and they want to see him walk, he almost gallops towards the door to leave so they don't see what I see on a daily basis. I may have to contact the surgeon who operated on his knees and break the bank and get Codsky an MRI. I just hate having him under anesthia (sp) but whatever works. By the way, the person who told me he's "going down hill"(and yes he does..down our hill to poop! LOL :D is a nurse at the nursing home called "General" who thinks everyone is a pain in the butt..so there ya go..consider the sourse! Cody's not allowed to leave me just yet.

I'm so sorry I haven't checked any email....new 4 day work weeks and sickies at home so I'm in panic mode.....The boy went to the vet last night for a routine distemper shot, only to find out, dogs don't need it every year anymore....BUT I actually showed Dr, Fox, very dramatically of course, how Cody gets up from a sitting or lay position so that he could understand my concern. (If anyone else had seen me I'd be in loony bin), He thinks that Cody's knees have "thickened" , esp; the left , due to his ACL sir-jury and arthritis. He doubts it's ACL again but thinks Cody's in distress and made me promise to put him back on Rimydal 2x a day and to call him on Friday. Dr Fox said he's watch him like a hawk with the Rimydal. I still walk him every night but he doesn't go as far as usual. Of course the sweetie has to follow me everywhere I go- up and down stairs -afraid he'll miss something. He goes down the steps sideways by night time, and my heart just skips a beat. ARGH! :(
Sudilar
01-30-2003, 01:10 PM
Aww, poor Cody. I was praying for better news.
Many years after Avalanche's ACL surgery, she developed arthritis in that knee.
Still praying that you get all better, Cody-boy!!

01-30-2003, 02:13 PM
If the stairs are hurting him , then I would get some of those baby gates and block him from the stairs. You will probably need more that one. That way YOU can control how much he's going up and down and if it's his knees that are bothering him, then it would probably lessen the pain. We had to do this with Chester to keep him confined when he was young.

Thanks so much for asking, Sue..Amazingly, very well. No ill effects neurologically from his stroke. I have to admit the Rimydal is really working for him. He's getting up easier and walking longer and is back to his bad self. His nose is drippy and his eyes red again. The antibiotic cleared it up but it's back again. I wonder if he had a migrane or sinus infection? At any rate, if this cold (Achoo!) doesn't clear up, I'll be back to the vet....(I think they should name "The Big Room" after Cody!)

Phred, Sue and Karen, I absolutely agree wtih you about the "naming" thing!!! LOL!!! I was certain that Dr. R would name his addition to his veterninary hospital after Kaycee, after all the hours, weeks and months we spent with him. He "thanked"me for helping him put his children through college. :(
Murphy may deserve her own wing, or even one of Phred's suggestions after going through her surgery next week. Just this weeks's visit was over $200. The Rimadyl was a pretty steep portion of that, but so was the grooming session and the office viist. Dr. R is not Murphy's vet and I wish he were.

Glad he's doing better, and that the Rimadyl is working for him. Hope you both keep feeling better and better ... dogs DO know when you are giving them a pill. Our first St. Bernard was quite skillful at it. She was capable of eating an entire dinner of dog food in 5 minutes and leaving the pill that was "hidden" in it untouched and clean at the bottom of the bowl. The would, if the pill was in, say, a piece of cheese, gulp the cheese, and hide the pill in her jowls for a minute or so, so just when you thought she'd really swallowed it this time, *plink* out the side of her mouth it would come, while she was looking the other way.
The only sure-fire way, which we often resorted to, was a two-person job. One person held her mouth open, the other threw the pill as far to the back of her throat as possible, then person one clamped her mouth shut, while person two stroked her throat and told her what a good girl she was. When she was obviously swallowed, she got the follow-up treat!
