Are dogs lactose intolerant?? My mother in law gives her pom melted cheese with his soft food, and our dogs love cheese. When we got Kito, the lady who had him said he loved cottage cheese, and to give it to him for a treat once in a while. He also likes cream cheese, and cheesecake. Is it harmful for me to give him the cottage cheese? He wasn't eating well when Abbey first came to visit, and so I was giving him a little every day so he would eat. But my stepmother says it is bad for them, and they shouldn't eat cheese. My vet didn't even blink when I told her I gave Kito cottage cheese, so I figured it was ok.
Anyone know anything about it??

I always thought cottage cheese (and other cheeses) were ok for dogs in small amounts. I've given my dogs little pieces of cheese as treats. I also gave Nebo about a spoonful of cottage cheese a day for while...I had to mix some liquid medication in with it. It never seemed to bother him.

Because my dog, Bear, is a diabetic he MUST eat twice a day. He wasn't used to eating breakfast so I had to try something to get him to eat. The vet said to try a teaspoon of cottage cheese. It worked.

I know that most dogs won't tolerate a lot of dairy, but a little won't hurt them. I often use a low-fat grated cheese on the dogs' food to encourage them to dig in. Just a sprinkle works.

Milk will cause diarhea and I imagine too much cheese would cause a lot of gas.
