View Full Version : Random thoughts in the Dog House

I'm putting this in the Dog House because I know everyone might not agree with me. I'm one of those "why can't we all just get along" types and feeling pretty hopeless right now.
I'm shaken by the death of Mr. Floyd up in Minnesota and the protests that turned ugly here in Chicago. There was a shooting at the shopping center where I hung out in high school with friends, and also had my first paying job ($3 an hour, 1984). The governor and the mayor of Chicago are doing what they can. I wonder if part of the problem was that everyone had sheltered in place since mid-March. This was like shaking a pop bottle and taking off the cap, things just blew up. I also wonder if there will be a spike in COVID cases in 2-3 weeks because the people at the protests were definitely not six feet apart and not all masked. They broke the windows of Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's) on State Street, which is a Chicago landmark. I've had a pretty sheltered life, except for the times I've worked in downtown Chicago with people of different races and ethnicities. But I'm a nurse, so every life matters to me. Whether you're white, black, brown, or orange with purple stripes I'm still going to care for you and care about you. That's all I got, I just don't know what else to say.
Thanks,
Elyse

Sending you hugs, Elyse. This is definitely more like a grain silo that rain got into, slowly and silently building up compression and fumes until it finally explodes. Such long, systemic oppression, and the quarantining in place certainly has not helped. The media and the politicians covering and fueling and glorifying hated are exacerbating, not helping solve it.
Sending you hugs, and to any who need them, too.

Most of the idiots on the street were NOT protestors.
I laugh when I see the new reports of the 'peaceful demonstrations' (they really put the demon in the word).
Go back and look at the reporting - one guy is standing in front of a building on fire and looking into the camera while saying something stupid like "It's a relatively peaceful protest".
When that first window is broken, that first line is sprayed from a can on a building and that first brick is thrown?
It's a riot, civil disturbance, melee.
Let's kinda call it what it is?
Idiots get sprayed with tear gas because they are throwing rocks and bottles at the cops and they start to cry about being doused with 'chemical agents' and start to call it a 'civil rights violation'. Seriously? If you are acting civil, you wouldn't get gassed?
Chicago turned loose a bunch of protestors who were arrested without bail and no charges filed.
They will laugh about this and probably go back to chi town should another 'civil disobedience' action break out I mean, you aren't going to jail or be charged....why not?
People are shocked when store owners show up on the roofs and in front of the stores with long arms...How could anyone do something like that?
Hint, it's to protect their hard work and life investment.
Those same people that do not want private citizens to own guns and want to defund the police - they start to cry foul and want those same cops to show up and do some thing, anything to people protecting their livelihood.
-------------
There was a basketball player/idiot who was on social media telling people to go out and protest, loot and burn the town down.
A few days later he was back on social media crying that the looters were outside of his building and should go back to their neighborhoods and destroy that. Leave him alone!
He's probably anti-cop, but will be on the phone crying to the dispatcher to get someone (most likely the same cops he hates) to protect him and his home?
---------------
Today I went to Fed Ex a package at Walgreen's - I could throw a rock about three good throws to hit the building - only to find that it had been looted. I had to drive about 7 miles to the next open store. I kept thinking about all the people who were screwed because they could not get a prescription or get one filled.
I went to get my hair cut and the woman who runs the place says that they were at her buidling trying to get in, she saw them on CCTV called the cops and turns out that they were the idiots that broke into the Walgreen's.
The Kroger in the west end was looted, the newspaper wrote that baby supplies and booze were mostly taken, prescriptions were strewn across the parking lot. People of the community were there at 4 a,m. to clean up the trash. At least the babies were fed and people got drunk.
And people wonder why you have to get a sales associate to unlock the baby formula so it can be purchased. You can't afford formula, so why have kids?
In another year or so the politicians will hold some kind of memorial for the event and take the mic and complain about the businesses that close,, never get rebuilt and move out of the area......I feel sorry for the people that have to take a bus across town to buy groceries, but don't feel too bad for too long. It's the dishonesty and them blaming the big businesses and capitalism for their failures and the lack of civic pride.
--------------------
Lastly?
I have seen people walking their dogs amongst the teargas, broken bottles and crap in the street like they were out for a walk in the park.
I would have loved to have been there and seen that in person, I would have literally gone over and beat the living ---- out of them and taken the dogs away.
there was another video of some (fill in your own verbiage here) holding a white dog by the scruff of it's neck, over his head and waving it around like it was some kind of was prize.
That says quite a bit for that man and the reason that I don't feel badly for the jack asses who are out on the streets acting like morons.
-------------------------
People want to be treated just like everyone else, but fail to realize that they need to people in the middle, I am 100% positive that no one wants to be taken advantage of, and you know?
The politicians and media don't want people to feel badly about their world but refuse to remind them of how they look by making up code words or ignoring facts.
Growing up my parents instilled into my sibs and me the concept of "verguenza' - shame.
MY mom would constantly tell us to tener poca verguenza - have a little shame.
it is a lost and strange trait to many people, You will know who they are because they show up on the radar with shrugged shoulders and their palms facing up while the repeat "WHAT DID I DO?"
Over and out.

thanks for being there for your patients.
I was glad to see people that finally realized how important our health care workers really are.
i have known many during the time I worked in health care and even now I make it a point to go out of my way to be a 'good patient' when i need them.
----------------------
One thing that REALLY REALLY ticked me off was this idea of "sheltering at home".
When I started working it was Legionnaire's disease, then AIDS/HIV, then Lyme, Hanta virus, West Nile and the heart break of psoriasis - just kidding.
When the illness first showed up on the radar, I was skeptical at the dire warnings. I was expecting people to be dropping dead in the streets and other walking around saying they wanted brains to eat?
I had to laugh at the constant change in direction. It's nothing, it's something, IT'S HUGE.........Well, maybe not?
MY peeve with telling people to stay at home and to use masks and gloves when they went out made it impossible for hospitals and workers to get PPE.
When I went to the store, I noticed that the people who were gloved and masked were the biggest morons on the planet, They had no qualms about brushing past you or standing next to you if you stopped to look at stuff on the shelf - they were pretty much acting as if they were invincible.
So as we slowly opened the world up again? There were all the rules to follow and the group who just didn't care. I covered up my face because i don't want to be that person that gets yelled at and it's only for a minute or however long I am in the store - I do the ninja mask thing and find out that people find that to be kinda scary - they move away rather quickly.
Much like you concerns and to my amusement was the events of the past weeks?
First we all had to stay indoors and limit our activity. You were a monster if you stayed outdoors but, with all the protests, the same idiot politicians are giving their blessings to go out and protest/loot/vandalize as long as you socially distance and cover your face.
As I read your post, I felt kinda badly because I am really interested in what the landscape is in two weeks - how many people are going to get sick from running about with the other idiots - to the HCPs that are going to be burdened on account of their stupidity.
I hope it's a false alarm and the dire predictions are poopoo, But when you have people acting like idiots?
Everything goes out the window.
Best wishes to you, keep your chin up and remember that in life we are pushed to be the best we can be.
And you know when that time comes because you can sit back, take a breath and say, "Well, THAT was interesting?"

I got to have lunch outside yesterday at a sit-down restaurant. It was a lovely day, not too hot or humid. I met up with a friend I hadn't seen since the shelter-in-place order went into effect. The case counts in Illinois are down overall, but there were many people out at the demonstrations so we'll have to see what happens with that. Still, it was a nice visit in the "phase 3" process.
Mia is feeling so much better. Five days at the vet and 1200 bucks later, they don't know what was wrong with her. The best they can figure is poisoning. No way. Maybe she ate a freaky insect on the balcony??. Anyway, what's up with Trump. Is he or is he not... the biggest douchebag in the entire world? Had to get that out 👍🏿❤️😘🌹😬xoxoox

Question. I was in the supermarket yesterday, the one where I shop most often. They have put signs on the floor showing the new one-way aisle configuration. I stepped out of the way of a young man who was coming out of an aisle the wrong way. He was with another young guy and neither of them were wearing masks. I excused myself and kept going. They were probably half my age, old enough to understand the rules about masking. They walked right past a store employee who said and did nothing. Should I have spoken up? I'm pretty much a "let's all get along" type, but there's a big sign on the door that says you're to have a face covering on when you enter the store. It's nagging at me today. What would I have lost by saying something? They might have cursed me out, might have laughed and walked away. I wish I had been obnoxiously loud, because they were clearly in the wrong. I did write a comment to the store on social media because of the store employee's inaction. Yes, a mask is inconvenient on a hot and humid day, but I really don't want to get sick.
Thanks--

I would definitely have quietly said something, not made a big deal, but mentioned it. They may not have noticed the signs, who knows?
The masks - or lack thereof - is trickier to address.
You did fine. Shouldn't second guess your instincts, I reckon they knew better. Most people can read at their age and some are not worth trying to intelligently communicate with. Sometimes you can just tell when it will almost certainly will be a waste of time. It's a shame a lot of folks have no regard for other people's health and well being. It's sad, jerks.

What I find endlessly entertaining is that a 'reality show host' beat a 'polished politician' not in the popular vote, but in the electoral college.
Does this mean that anyone who went to electoral college will get their student loans forgiven?
I keep voting for Pat Paulsen. This is his year!!
----------------------
"Assuming the Left Wing or the Right Wing gained control of the country, it would fly around in circles"
"We have nothing to fear but fear itself - except the boogieman"
- P Paulsen.
Well, my husband finds agent orange endlessly entertaining as well. Unfortunately all I ever feel is offended, repulsed and still shocked. Even after all the absurd, perverse theatrics, Donald Trump still manages to shock me, what an imbecile. Oops, couldn't help it, sorry.

My mom fell on Friday and broke her right hip (actually her right femur). She had a partial hip replacement on Saturday and is going to a rehab unit today. My dad has been able to visit a couple of times, but it wears him out. We're also dealing with the COVID19 visitor restrictions (which really suck, please pardon the bad language). So- if you could please think a good thought or say a little prayer for my mom (Shirley)- that would be appreciated more than you know.
Thank you so much,

Thank you, Karen, mon and phesina! My mom went to the hospital's rehabilitation unit yesterday. She had a very full day today with lots of therapy work. I was worried yesterday when I got there, but after today I know that her going to rehab was the right next step. I would take her place in a moment if I could.
Thank you again,
Elyse
Aww, of course you'd take your Mamas place. You need to be right where you are and who you are. Feeling powerless is an awful feeling but you are doing far more than you know and all your love and caring is priceless 🌈⭐️👍🏿💕
Been doing walks to get some exercise lately and I love my community, but lately I've been noticing some disturbing behaviour. Some dog owners pick up the dog poo to impress other walkers, then....they chuck the bag of dog sh*t in people's yard. Right in the freakin' bushes. REALLY!! Just venting, SO gross and stupid. Who the heck is suppose to pick that s*it up??? Peeps suck sometimes. Really!! They got the pooch, they got the bag, you think they could figure out how to dispose of the crap eh🙈 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏼♂️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♂️

I wanted to post this separately.
I went downtown on an errand today and saw all the boarded up windows to all the businesses near my destination.
'peaceful protests'?
Yea, right.
I lived in Lost Angeles at the time of the riots there and walked into my mom's house.
She had the TV on and was watching the coverage and crying.
I asked her what she was going on about and she was upset that people looting and burning down their neighborhoods.
She said something like "these people don't know what they have and what they are doing...."
Hmmmm.
Interesting thoughts.
My mom was like that - she brought me up to appreciate the things I took for granted.
-----------
The glass on the Walgreen's that I use is still boarded up and every time I walk thru that door it reminds me of some jerk who decided to break in to get some drugs (HAHAHA they were arrested across the street trying to break into the beauty salon).
So, If you have a chance to go into your town and look at all the storefronts that are boarded up and have some sign with platitudes on how they 'stand' with FN idiots who only want to destroy what other people have?
Realize they don't care about you, your support or safety.
------------
I read an article on line and the person being interviewed said "People do not like chaos" regarding the foolery going on here in the country
No, most of us don't.
As my dad used to say, "People are looking for three legs on the cat, but they will find four....."
And to add to that thought? Teeth, fangs and claws, too.
Those are the people that will show up at the ER looking for stitches and complaining about how mean the cat was.
Feline Power. all the way.

Quick update: Mom is home from rehab and doing better. She scared the daylights out of me today. I was looking out the window because their townhouse buildings are being painted. When I turned around she had stood up and was heading to the bathroom with her walker! We had agreed that she would tell my dad or me before she started walking, so we could walk with her. (She kinda forgot) I had to move quickly to catch up, but she did pretty well. So we're headed in a good direction. Thank you again for praying and thinking good thoughts!

The Cook County (Illinois) highway department came along and patched a relatively small section of the "main drag" in my small suburb. It took a year of work to get them out here. They only patched the part that was worst. There are other areas that they must have deemed not as bad. Would it have been that difficult to make the project longer and patch the entire stretch between the two traffic lights? Especially this summer, when traffic along that stretch is way down because of the pandemic.

No offence, D.T. is the laughing stock of the U.S.... has been forever it seems.
I turned off Tuesday evening's debate after about 20 minutes. I couldn't follow it. So much talking. It reminded me of staff meetings I've been in where the agenda items are pretty broad and everyone has something to say. The discussion just keeps going in circles and nothing gets decided. So I turned it off. I do wonder who determines the topics and prepares the questions beforehand- is it the organization that's sponsoring the debates? Or the moderator? We'll see how the Vice-Presidential debate goes next week, I hope it will be more orderly than Tuesday night was. Yikes!
Hello! I was looking forward to the debate too but I, like you couldn't bear to watch it for very long. They both behaved like children and who needs that? You are right, it was a waste of time. I guess now that Trump has covid, there may not be a debate anytime soon? Guess time will tell. I don't like the man but I wouldn't wish that disease on him or his wife. Might have helped had he put on a mask. Doing good here, thanks for asking 💕❤️ Sadly I must have shoulder replacement surgery. My broken arm just didn't heal right after the first 2 surgeries. Found this out yesterday, get a CT scan next week, go from there. Was upset at first but hell, what's the point. Gotta do what ya gotta do and move on right. That should be a long recovery, jeeeepers ☹️🙄 Never mind, sending best wishes and lotsa sunshine to you all🌈🎃👍🏿💕❤️

P.s How is every little wee thing with you sweetheart.. I am so scared that you or anyone else may feel really sad, depressed, things have not been easy. I burst into tears a lot for NO reason quite a bit but only when I'm alone. These are very stressful times indeed and I want everyone to feel loved. I sometimes feel really unloved and sad. I just know that another Thanksgiving, another Christmas may go by, all of us separated 👎🏿 The truth is, everyone can be together in spirit and ... I love my beautiful family know I love them.

Dear mon, we're sending loads of good wishes and warm healing energies. Here's hoping this surgery will bring you some relief from the pain. Please keep us posted.
{{{{{HUGS}}}}} and ~~~~PURRRS~~~~ and :love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love: from us!
Thanks so much for thinking of me ❤️ Wishing you and yours the very best too! I'll let you know when they book my surgery, can't be soon enough. I want it over with ASAP if it must be done, ewww, SO yucky 🤢😜 Group cyberhugs to all Pet Talk Peeps ❤️💕👍🏿
I think that no one wants to be a burden, be dependant, all physically screwed up. I hate it, even for a little while. It makes me realize how awsome people are that have physical challenges and how they adapt. I may be more crippled by my fear of being physically dependant than being physically dependent after surgery. Either way, that insight doesn't help me one measly bit. I am furious I have to get surgery, absolutely f ing furious.
It's like I'm stuck at 25'yrs. old in my head. Like not mentally, thank God but physically sort of. It's hard to explain, not sure if its good or bad. Oh, I'm sure this too shall pass, I'm 57, women in our family generally live well into their 90's. Life is quite the experience eh 😻👍🏿😸🤜🏻🤛😁😜.

To mon: ((((hugs))))
I'm so ready for the election to be over. It's been very divisive. As we get closer to election day it seems to get worse. And Illinois COVID cases are trending upward again. I was really hoping it would be done and over with by now. No such luck. It's no use for me to worry about either of these things I can't control, though.
On a more positive note, there are a few trees around here beautifully showing their fall colors. I'll try to get some photos with my phone.
Thanks, I caught that hug cassiesmom! I am so sorry the covid is not dying out where you are at, it's getting worse here in British Columbia too. We wear masks everywhere. My husband is an essential worker and hasn't skipped a beat in that department. He repairs heavy machinery so he isn't around a lot of people at his job sites and wears a mask always. I stay home and only grocery shop once a week, never go out or have company other than twice in months. The fall colours are more beautiful than ever this year, it is an artists wildest dream! This pandemic has taken a heavy toll on most people and I'm not sure that if and when it ends we will have learned a profound lesson or not. I guess life is what we make it and this covid crap was not a welcome guest. I have tried to be kinder and more understanding of strangers and more grateful for the loved ones in my life and the blessings I have. I am still grieving the loss of a loved one and I cannot imagine passing judgement on someone who is doing the same. It is impossible to know what other people are going through so the only way to go is kindness. Also, selfishly I realize that helping others only makes me feel better too so it's a "win win" situation, right girlfriend!? 👍🏿🤜🏻🤛🌹🤜🏻🤛💕❤️😻😻😻
Who's gonna win the election folks? My bet is on Trump. First of all, he lied to the rednecks and told them Biden was gonna take away their guns 😯 Second of all, he will be charged with tax evasion if he loses so he will refuse to accept the results even if he loses. C'mon, everyone is thinking it, just no ones saying it 😸😹🤢😈👹☠️💀👻🎃 Happy post Halloween!

I'm afraid Biden will win and Trump will refuse to accept the results. And his thugs will riot, with his (unstated) blessing.
That's the spirit! Totally possible, anyone else care to share? Please!! Times running out 😻😁😍

I'm afraid that if Trump wins, his behavior will get even more unpredictable and erratic, as if to say "I'll show you." Illinois is not a battleground state - we're mostly Democratic and I expect Biden will win easily here.
I'm impressed - as I always am - by the fact that I can show up at the polling place, cast a ballot for whoever I like, maybe say hello to a neighbor or two, and then I'm free to go. The process works time and again, even though the participants and the outcomes change.

I'm really frustrated by the large number of people in my building who think the posted notice about wearing a mask in the elevator doesn't apply to them. There are no consequences if they don't comply. There is also a strong sense of misogyny- it is a cultural thing. Sorry, people- I'm a nurse, so I'm going to call you out for not masking and I may or may not be too polite about it. The number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital where I work has gone steadily upward for about the past 3 weeks. Maybe a little longer. We also have more patients in the hospital in general. I've also heard rumors about scheduled procedures being cancelled again. We're back to strictly no visitors except for obstetrics. I know people are "pandemic weary", but it bugs me that my neighbors are letting their guard down. Not that it was ever up that high around here in the first place.
Thank you for letting me rant,
Elyse

Good grief, that's horrible, Elyse! How thoughtless, and how ignorant, of these alleged-neighbors. Can you complain to the management, and if so, would they do anything?
How many floors up is your place? Too many to consider taking the stairs instead, I assume? Especially if you're coming home with a bag of groceries or something.
I hope something can be done to get these jerks to comply.
:love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love:
So sorry to hear that! That is definately the last thing you need! I have no clue why people do shit like that. I guess some folks don't care about themselves or others, or there are those that think covid is big lie. Can you actually beleive that some people think there is no such thing as Covid?? I wish you safety, and I suppose you have to wait for the next elevator, hope they don't breath covid germs all over, or take the stairs. I do get the possibility that complaining can lead to even more problems sometimes. I sure hope that's not the case and that these people will change their ways. They are jerks. Well...... they certainly are. Wishing you the best ❤️💕👍🏿🤷🏾♀️😸🐶

I'm on the third floor. There are six sets of 8 stairs each with a landing in between. Going down is harder than going up, not that either way is especially easy. Our custodian cleans the elevator once a week- which consists of sweeping the floor and taking a quick swipe at the buttons with a wet rag. I'm just really tired of pleading with my neighbors to do this simple thing. There are a few residents in the building who have serious health conditions and it's them I am most concerned for. It's been brought up to management and they have said that they can't force people to comply. It just makes me really mad.
My kitten is now Huge. Has anyone had to weigh down their cat tree so it's safer for pussy? If so..... how. She is huge now. Substantial cat 4 sure 😻😼😸🙀😾
Bought a cement block to tie to the base of the cat tree. Weighs 80 lbs. at least we know the tree won’t fall over when she leaps up there now. Have fun.

I love animals, but the wool at home is exhausting. Taking out a large vacuum cleaner, stretching the wire is already nauseous. That's why I bought a vacuum cleaner with rechargeable batteries just for small cleaning every day. Took Shark Navigator Upright Cordless Vacuum. I looked at this model in the review https://homemakerguide.com/best-cordless-vaccum/. In general, I like such useful sites where you can find the right things for your home, garden, garage and more.

I don't want to celebrate Christmas via Zoom - I want to have it in person. But I'm starting to think that's out of the question for 2020. Way back in the spring I never expected to be in the same situation come fall. They might vaccinate health care workers in the first "wave" in Illinois. I'm a nurse, but I'm in the revenue cycle area (I don't have direct patient contact 99.8% of the time) so I might not be among the very first of the first. We'll see, though.

Even if you get vaccinated, your whole family is unlikely to be vaccinated before Christmas. Therefore, the restrictions will still apply. The next Christmas, which the whole family can gather, will be in 2021, or even in 2022.
That should hold the cat tree in place! Good solution, mon. Hey, it is totally working great! Old man almost had a stroke carrying it up three flights of stairs. It was his idea. 殺藍藍 although, seeing him resting on one of the stairs...bit scary. Of course the cat would not jump upon it for a week. CATS eh!!!
Sorry, that post was weird. Got a new I pad. Love and best wishes

Somedays, some moments
It's just too hard to be human
To be cheerful or friendly or even civil
When all you want to do
Is hide, sleep and
Bury yourself in blankets and fleece
Sometimes too bone-weary life is
And only sleep
No chocolate or tea or
Okay, maybe a wagging welcome-home burst
Of canine enthusiasm
Or a feline escort, tail proudly held high
To the front door
Or the right hug
Can bring me back
From the edge of the void

I heard on the news that Sen. Sanders had sweatshirts made with his famous inauguration day picture, they sold out, and he gave away the proceeds to area food banks and other good causes. I thought that was pretty awesome. I saw one on a nursing Website- it was that famous picture with him seated on an emergency department cart. The caption said: You've heard of the elf on the shelf ... now here's Bernie on a gurney! I had to laugh when I saw that one.

Grrrrrrr. Whoever designed and sold a smoke detector that CANNOT have its battery replaced, but must be discarded and a new one bought should be forced to swallow the great Pacific Garbage Patch in one sitting.
Just had one go off for having a low battery, and when it was finally prized open, one had to break the plastic to get at the non-standard battery that was wired into place. Evil. Just Evil.
Tissue - even tissues can be recycled or composted. But planned obsolescence for a smoke detector? Evil, say I.

How is it priced? Is it comparable to a smoke detector that can have its battery replaced? I don't like climbing on a stool to try to get the smoke detector down when it starts chirping, which in my case is usually at the worst possible time. And one of my neighbors always calls to tell me it's chirping (yes, I hear it and it takes me a few minutes to get the stepstool in position). Is the whole thing designed to be thrown away? It would end up in a landfill, which seems like a bad idea to me. I thought you weren't supposed to put batteries in a landfill?
Karen
02-22-2021, 06:00 AM
Apparently the whole thing was designed to be thrown away. Some batteries are okay for dispel, others should be recycled, and this was mixed plastic, metal and paper, so impossible to sort for recycling without spending considerable time and energy.
I do not remember how much it cost - it's not like there was a label on the box saying "No replacing the battery on this one" when we bought it!
